I often wonder if he would have put that opportunity away had he started the match and had the faith of the coach. Throughout that tournament, Cesare Maldini (foolishly) seemed to enjoy telling the media that Baggio was his second choice behind an underperforming Del Piero.

Yeah, after the game against France he apologized to Baggio for not giving him more minutes.. they always realize their mistakes late .. but still, I like Cesare for confessing his mistakes .. the other coaches didn’t

@@alqasem5691 It was too little too late. It's crazy that it took Maldini over a month to see that Baggio was clearly in better form and physical shape. Baggio scored and assisted vs Chile, assisted vs Cameroon, scored - as a sub - against Austria. Whereas ADP looked lethergic, ineffective and was struggling with the pressure. The trouble with many coaches of that time was that they prioritized their pride over good sense. It's ironic. Baggio is best remembered for his exploits in 1994, but in 1990 and 1998 he was in much better shape and was a nuisance against opponents throughout the 90 mins. The great moments he produced in 1994 were in spite of rigid tactics and multiple injuries.
