When I was in my early teens my dad worked for the US civil service in Panama and I attended Curundu Jr Highschool. When he retired some years later, and after we moved back to the US, he took a job working for a US company doing civil engineering consulting work and I visited him in Panama. One evening he and I were at the bar of Hotel Panama enjoying a Cerveza Panama when none other than Roberto Duran sat at the bar beside us. He was truly a humble person and we really enjoyed our visit with him. He was truly reflective of the vast majority of the Panamanians we knew.

I remember that fight with Hearns. Duran entered the ring making the weight ok, but there was no muscle tone, he didn't look in good shape and Hearns looked amazing, focused and ready. Hearns took Duran very seriously and he said that he would take Roberto out in two. Did he really believe that he actually could do that?Duran didn't seem to have a stragedy. He at least should've done much better. He was careless and paid the price. Definately over confident also. Hagler on the other hand, knew what he needed to do. He was focused, and knew that if Hearns got to hit him with the punches that Duran took; that he too, might go the same way. Hagler had to get to Hearns and hit him hard and to get him to fight. He got Tommy really angry and Tommy fell into Marvin's trap. On this occasion, Hearns lost focus, my God, if you can knock Duran out like that, you can do it to anybody is what he maybe thought. Hagler knew the danger. Don't hang about with Tommy Hearns around. Duran had the most illustrious career and at his best, as he was with Leonard in Montreal, unbeatable. He was the most enigmatic. Hearns was the hardest single puncher and a wonderful boxer, but if he got hit hard and clean, he could go, few ever got the chance though! Leonard was a super stylish, hard punching boxer and was the darling of the sport and he in my opinion didn't beat Marvin. I also think Tommy got got the edge on him during the second fight, but a legend nevertheless. Marvelous Marvin Hagler was one of the greatest middleweight's of all time, but unfortunately he wasn't given the credit that he deserved. It wasn't Leonard's fault, but to beat the champ, the challenger has to what Roberto did to Ray in Montreal at least. Ray, Roberto, Marvin and Tommy were the real Fab Four. Sorry, John, Paul, George and Ringo.

Lol on Beatles.... you don’t think Ringo could have a go with Hearns? Yeah Durrant pinnacle crowning where he got the credit that he had deserved for the last nine years was his beating D in Montreal savage brilliant fighter too bad he partied so much and was overconfident a lot .Leonard showed Gallo in quickly ask him for the rematch when he heard reports that the rain was partying drinking and eating his way. Duran spent a lot of energy , in a short period of time, getting down to weight He wasn’t nearly as quick or ferocious in second fight and with Leonard making fun of him ... u know the rest

Roberto Duran is my favorite of all time, he's aggressive style in the late sixties and early seventies and even 80's, you'd had to see him, he would take you apart slowly, you could hit him with a best punch, he would just get stronger, and stronger. and only when he got older, and started losing At this point he had a record of nearly 90 straight wins. Duran found in the 60's, 70's 80's 90's and 2000's that's an amazing five decades. One should really see he's early fights.. I have seen every single one of his fights. the Wilfred Benitez, 1st Leonard, 2nd,and 3rd. The Hagler, the Hearns. The peppino cuevas.

He has not aged well. He was very entertaining always and fought some of the best boxers in boxings heyday. He was very elusive in and out of the ring. I say that he was one of the best having fought all the great lightweights, Sugar Ray, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler all superstars at that time. When legitimate boxers were no longer to be found you could always count on Roberto Duran. He had a durable mug, I never once saw him bleed.

Duran is a legend one of my favorite fighters of all time...I still feel bad for him and how they did him in the second Leonard fight not giving him time to train for that fight because they new in shape he was better then Leonard and would have beat him again forget about the third fight he was past his prime..

Intelligent and controlled ferocity with great defense. It’s a shame that after the first Leonard fight his career became checkered and mainly because like he said ,he got overconfident partied hard ,drank . I remember hearing accounts of him ballooning up to over 200 pounds after winning a big fight I mean that’s incredible. If you could ever find a clip of him doing his “French cancan“ jump rope routine... It’s amazing! I saw him do it before the first Leonard fight, looked at a friend and said “fights over”

I Love Duran, my favorite fighter of all time. BUT, Hearns clearly hit him on the chin with the final blow, not the head, as Duran claims here. Just wanted to clear that up.

Duran was down for 4-2 on cards , in 2 nd fight w Ray, it was certainly not a blowout. I don’t think Duran was ever going to get knocked out by Leonard but Leonard was humiliating him &Duran was not in the best condition as he was overconfident and I think he just said “F this guy “ without thinking of the consequences; it was a decision in the moment Leonard was embarrassing him and Duran k new he wasn’t in the physical shape to do what had to be done. Fortunately Roberto got him self together and like he said won three more titles .His victories over Davey Moore and Iran Barkley (who destroyed Hearns) were so inspirational ,cerebral and yet power of performances. Duran and Ali were my two favorite fighters of all times, w Sugar Ray (Robinson) but I hate to admit this but I always say styles make fights and I believe even if Duran was in great shape against Hearns, his style was made for Hearns and he still gets knocked out

Duran has a point a great point on how much boxers made back them to now. Jordan made the same point in basketball and mickey mantle in baseball. You had to be great to stay relevant in the respective sports back then. Today athletes get rewarded first and have no incentive to be great. Athletes in the past were better and had that hunger. Today kids just want to make money and are not disciplined

: / I WANT TO CORRECT ROBERTO HERE, ON HIS BELIEF THAT HE HAS NO REGRETS BECAUSE HE THINKS EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN OUR LIVES IS WRITTEN BY GOD AND HAS TO HAPPEN THE WAYS THEY HAPPEN!!! THIS IS COMPLETELY NOT TRUE! GOD GIVES EVERYONE OF US FREE WILL AND A CONSCIENCE! WE ALL HAVE A CHOICE! WE CANT ALWAYS CONTROL THINGS THAT HAPPEN TO US, BUT WE CAN CHOOSE WHAT WE DO ABOUT THEM! ITS THE SAME IN MATTERS OF LOVE AND WORK, AND FRIENDSHIPS, AND FAMILY TOO! WE CANT CHOOSE WHAT OTHERS DO TO US, BUT WE CAN CHOOSE HOW WE ARE GOING TO REACT TO IT! AND WHAT ROBERTO DID NOT SAY ABOUT THE QUESTION ASKED TO HIM ABOUT THE "NO MAS" INCIDENT WITH RAY LEONARD, WAS THAT HE "QUIT" BECAUSE RAY WAS NOT FIGHTING! HE WAS TAUNTING ROBERTO AND TRYING TO PLAY HEAD GAMES WITH HIM, BUT WAS NOT FIGHTING.. ROBERTO WAS THERE TO FIGHT, NOT TO PLAY GAMES.. SO HE GOT TIRED OF RAYS SHIT AND SAID, NO MAS! AND WALKED OUT OF THE RING.. I THINK HE WAS CLEARLY MAKING A STATEMENT.. HE DIDNT ACTUALLY "QUIT".. ROBERTO WOULD NEVER "QUIT".. HE JUST GOT REALLY FRUSTRATED AND TIRED OF RAYS GAMES.. RAY WAS LIKE A BRATTY KID, AND HE WAS AFRAID OF ROBERTO.. IF YOU WATCH THE FIGHT, YOU WILL SEE HE DOESNT REALLY "FIGHT" WITH ROBERTO, HE STAYS AWAY AND TRIES TO GET POINTS WHENEVER HE CAN. BUT HE DIDNT WANT TO FIGHT WITH ROBERTO.. FOR GOOD REASON TOO! LASTLY, TO GET BACK TO OUR CHOICES IN LIFE? WE NEED JESUS TO FORGIVE US FOR OUR SINS AND TO COME INTO OUR HEARTS, TO SAVE US FROM OURSELVES, RECONCILE US BACK WITH GOD OUR FATHER, AND TO HELP TRANSFORM US INTO GODLY PEOPLE! WE CAN DO THESE THINGS OURSELVES! NO ONE IS FORGIVEN FOR THEIR SINS UNTIL THEY CHOOSE TO GO TO JESUS AND ASK JESUS TO FORGIVE THEM FOR THEIR SINS!

Leonard fought Duran’s fight the first time and lost a close decision. Then embarrassed him in the rematch to the point of quitting. He stopped Hearns with one eye. Then defeated the invincible Hagler as a middleweight. Time the man gets his due!
