In this video, Robert shows you how he added a 12v DC transfer pump purchased from Harbor Freight to his existing rain barrel system used to water his garden.
He also explains how he used 1/2" schedule 40 PVC to route the water from the rain barrel to the garden.
Overall, Robert's goal was to keep the overall cost low for adding the water pump to the rain barrel system.

An easy way to level out the ground for setting concrete blocks is to use a 6" high mound of gravel or granite chips and tamp them level with a tamper. Set the blocks on top and they will not shift after that. I've found that you cannot trust leveling dirt as it will settle over time and the barrels may slump slightly to one side.

If you use a RV water pump they have an auto on solenoid so whenever you turn the hose on and the pressure drops or turn the valve on it will turn on automatically and they're much quieter

The noise might not be a bad thing once it becomes considered everyday sounds. That way when the barrel runs dry you hear the tell-tale of a problem in the works. If one the other hand stealth is required, the sinking the tub into the ground would work to mask the noise.

Nice job Robert! One thing to consider when setting up a system like this is to include a backflow prevention device to protect you home's city water supply from potential contamination from your rain barrel source. Check your local plumbing code. It may be as simple as inexpensive double check valves or more expensive with a reduced pressure zone backflow preventer which may also require periodic inspections by a certified backflow technician. Probably safer just to pipe up two separate spigots to prevent potential cross contamination.

@@chrisl7608 I suspect the city inspector would raise hell anyway, if they saw the interlink between the water barrel and the city water lines. They freak out about it even if there is NO water barrel attached. I once had a city inspector in Cheyenne, Wyoming make all kinds of threats if I refused to install a backflow prevention device on an outdoor faucet that never connected to anything but a hose and lawn sprinkler. The trouble is not a simple matter of differential pressure. The problem arises when the city water system LOSES pressure. That's when backflow happens and pollutes the city water with water from the rain barrel.
@wilmorris4225
@wilmorris4225 2 жыл бұрын
Although a backlog preventer is a very good idea, the water line Ata spigot us not directly connected to the city water supply but rather through the house. All houses should have a backflow preventer upstream of the household water shutoff. The real concern here, is backflowing into his own household water piping.

Very fine video with close ups on plumbing fittings and complete explanation up one on your overkill rain system. Your attention to detail is phenomenal. A great deal of $ and time was spent on this project so I cannot see that you did this to use "free" water. Rainwater is however very good for your garden. Unless you have rain frequently in which case you might not need much water for your garden you will be needing a larger reservoir. Subscribed

For your future project improvement, add an "on demand" pressure switch in parallel with the manual on/off switch. When you open the valve the pressure drops and turns on the "on demand" pressure switch. When the valve is closed the water line is pressurized and the switch turns the pump off. Very neat project, well done.

WOW! A video where I didn't see something done wrong or foolishly. I've been watching quite a few video's. You can find low voltage timers that can turn your pump on and off at set intervals. I believe you can even find them where you can set a 7 day watering schedule. I have yet to start my project. I've considered solar for keeping the battery charged same as you're thinking (or may have done by now). Oh, wait - I see another video from you displaying solar panels. I applaud you for your creativity and understanding of the basics. One vide I watched the guy drilled and tapped his barrel. And I definitely had comments for him about his methodology and about the strength of such a connection. Two assurances illustrating two natural ways vegetation stays hydrated. A very nice ecosystem for plants. I have so far enjoyed using mineralizer in my potted plants. The growth explodes in no longer than a week so, sprinklers would help bring minerals down into the roots.

At 6:57 it's clear I don't have to check any further for water knowledge or any other. I'm happy now I subbed. Thanks for the fine filming.

Lots of good ideas here to improve my setup! I used a 3/4 Horsepower pump using 120 Volt ac power. Then I run a hose, (similar to your setup), from the 50 gallon rain barrel to the pump and connect a garden hose to the pump. It gives plenty of pressure, as much as from house pressure. Also, I only use it to water the lawn and boulevard because the rain barrel is fed from my house roof which leaches tar chemicals and grit from the shingles. Thanks Green Tech Town.

This was awesome. I love how fast you get into the details, and don’t play around. Good info on cutting and connecting PVC! That will actually help me move an AC line that is dripping onto my foundation. I love that you tested all those different watering methods because that’s good for some of us needing to water grass and other things aside from just the garden. Super awesome! Your garden looks beautiful by the way

I love to watch and learn from great youtube video. This video give me some ideas for my garden improvement. One side comment, the weather proof pump enclosure, having drain hole(s) can avoid water problem inside the enclosure. Great job !

@@GreenTechTown Harbor Freight also sells a solar kit that would keep your battery charged. I have one on my setup, and it's been working for 5 years now. I used an RV pump that switches itself on when you open the faucet. Great video!

I like to take some duct tape around both primer and cement sans for more stability. You should prime, glue, and put the pieces together with a TWIST. 90° is usually enough. Then hold.
