I worked in Boots and people not only used testers to do a full face but opened and used products ALL the time. I honestly cannot believe Superdrug sponsored that video and are encouraging it. I wouldn't buy any beauty product off the shelf anymore unless it was completely sealed, I only buy online fresh from the warehouse 😅 And as for testers, I'd rather risk the wrong shade than whatever diseases are in those things 🤢

@@marigold3208 unfortunately, where i live we have ZERO stores other than Walmart. So, to say buying makeup is extremely difficult (I shop online) but before I discovered the online beauty community (about 7 years ago) I would shop there. The amount of new makeup, ppl just open, use as testers, and put back was astonishing and disgusting to me. Like really!? Who opens up an eyeliner, uses it and puts it back? Thankfully I was able to find ONE unopened bottle in my shade. It's hard enough trying to find foundation in my shade in stores cause I'm so damn white lol. Its also terrible that a lot of people will swatch and use product and then put it on the shelf for someone else to buy. Nowadays stores are so understaffed. They don't have the resources to stop this from happening. I used to work in retail and I can say I saw so many people do this, I approached them to educate them and they flipped out and yelled at me. Listen to the staff, check your makeup before buying it and dont support brands that sell unsealed product. Shop smart, stay safe.

My thoughts exactly! It still amazes me seeing people wet their brush and then pick up shadow. Smh to each their own but I spend way too much on makeup to ruin it doing dumb things like that. There is a reason it says on the package to store in a cool DRY place as well. Not only will it cause hard pan but it will also cause mold/mildew faster and your palettes will expire much sooner. When I see someone complain about these things happening to their palette in a short amount of time but also say they never clean their brushes and also use them wet I’m like well no duh.

Speaking as a makeup artist that worked at Sephora years ago, I can attest to the fact that using testers is not only disgusting, but also that people do some crazy things with them. 😳 I once saw a girl come in when I was stocking product, I asked if I could help her with something and she said no and that she was just browsing. I went back to stocking and figured my manager would try to sell her something once she got back from her break in the next minute or so. But then when she did come back, I all of a sudden heard her go, “MAAM. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Please stop!” I turn around, and this girl is LITERALLY LICKING various liquid lipstick wands to figure out “which one tasted the best.” 🤦🏻‍♀️ We always tried to stop people anytime they were using the wands/applicators in testers or directly applied to products to their face in unsanitary ways. We also tried our best to sanitize our testers and stuff. But once someone for example, uses a liquid lipstick tester and uses the wand it came with instead of one of the disposable ones, there’s only so much you can do. Which I found out the hard way. I was always iffy about using the testers at work. But one day I tried out this new liquid lipstick that was basically calling my name 😂, and guess what happened? I ended up with both the flu AND pneumonia AT THE SAME TIME. Which I actually had no idea you could have both at the same time when I was younger. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And then within the span of a month, ALL of my coworkers and even managers ended up also getting sick. So hearing about all those things in this video were most definitely #relatable. 😂

for a lot of people, finding their undertone is a real struggle. i am still working to find my “true undertone”. it doesn’t help that foundation ranges don’t use color correctly. they often throw in these strange tones, and slap cool/warm/neutral on the label and call it a day. some ranges all pull so yellow that, even if you have neutral skin, you can think you’re cool-toned because it’s just the least yellow option. and, to top it off, there is no consistency between brands!

I 10000% agree, the “doing my makeup for free until I get caught” scheme is really disgusting on multiple levels. First of all, it’s just tasteless and very tacky. Secondly, just buy the makeup for Gods sake, I saw a woman going around to multiple stores doing this every day as her everyday makeup. Sounds annoying and cheesy but that makeup brand/ store is losing profit because you want to make a stupid Tiktok video. Robert already covered the hygienic issues of it. There is a *REASON* when you go into Ulta they use a fresh sponge and wipe down the compact, lipstick, palate before applying to your skin. This is gross at anytime but especially during a pandemic, as he said. That’s my rant.

Ugh, I'm late but I can confirm this. If they allowed us to be properly staffed we would happily wipe and alcohol spray the testers regularly, but there's genuinely no time. Take a lesson: This is how people get herpes simplex!! I’ve seen parents let their snotty kids PLAY with makeup testers at malls - no respect whatsoever - all while the parents are somewhere doing something else 🤷🏻‍♀️ And how many other people are thinking the same as you do: “I’m doing my high end makeup at the mall for free!! Yay!” Oh nay! Do yourself the biggest favor in a lifetime and stop doing that immediately! It’s even better to wear no makeup at all, trust me! 💗 Side note: It’s not even “a trend” that needs to stop. Oh boy...undertones...let me vent...I had an MUA tell me "I shouldn't worry about there not being as many cool tones available bc most cool toned ppl wear yellow toned foundations to correct the red." My undertone is not needing to be corrected? That's different than a bit of redness in the cheeks. I asked if she would wear a pink foundation to "correct" her yellow tone. Nope! That used to be a thing though, assuming everyone should wear yelllow/warm foundations. I look like an umpa lumpa in anything warm. And don't even get me started on cool undertones running yellow or even warm in some cases. I'm uncooked chicken and it is what it is lol

I argue with people all the time on Reddit about color matching because so many seem to think they are an olive undertone for some reason and usually they actually have a pink undertone and so many others don’t understand it either but are so confident they do 🤦‍♀️. Blows my mind 😂

I agree, I really hope the 'doing my make-up for free' is fake, or it should be re-titled 'spreading bacteria & ruining products in Superdrug'. Don't encourage kids (or adults) to do things they know they shouldn't be doing. (PS. Love you Robert! You and James & Marcus have been releasing some of my favourite content ever, & I've been watching KZfaq since it started)

When my mom first took me makeup shopping with her she taught me to only use testers on your hands and arms (usually the wrist is a good spot for seeing if a foundation matches and covers) and she told me about how you could get infections and stuff by putting it on your face and it shocks me every time I see someone just slap it straight onto their face

I worked at the Body Shop over 10 years ago. People did this. They would come in, before they went to work at the mall, and put in a full face of make up. I would tell them about the bacteria buildup on the applicators. I offered them sterile application sponges. They never took me up on that. Hundreds of people were using these products on their faces- mascara included, every week. I wasn’t trying to get them to buy the products. I cleaned the make up area every day. It’s gross. So much dirt/oil accumulates on the packaging and make up area, imagine what is transferred into your skin. Yuck!

So, so happy about your videos yet again. I was getting fed up of make up for a while because I really believed in these hacks and just wondered what was wrong with me because they never looked good on me in real life. Like color correcting with 5 different colors etc... Just love the way you explain everything and tell what acctually works outside of social media. Your videos are one of the reasons I'm back to being super excited about make up and even changing my career path to become an mua in the future, so thank you :)

I am an artist and I can say from color theory that black blocks the light so when you cover it with a lighter color you will get that black sucking away the natural translucency of skin. White or very light color dulls hues. Yes, they become tints but if you want great color don't mix light colors to get it. Buy a pure color in your hue so that you are again keeping the translucency and pure hue.

I saw that Superdrug ad recently and it really got on my nerves. When I was a kid I went into Superdrug and security was kicking these women out. He told us they were homeless and would come in and do their makeup with the testers all the time. Now Superdrug are advertising that? Encouraging it? Why weren’t those homeless women allowed to use the testers but this kid who I’m sure can afford any makeup he likes is being told to do his whole routine from “testers” (although they were almost certainly new, unopened products for the ad).
