@@Lone-wolf-1982It's kind of more than just a parody of Robin Hood in general; it uses most of the plot of this movie as its own. It feels like Brooks kind of remade it in the style of old Robin Hood movies, like the one starring Errol Flynn, while "Prince of Thieves" tried to be a throwback to old swashbucklers like this while giving it a more contemporary feel (less clean and glamorous costumes, more Hollywood style dialogue, etc)

Tucks' words were very fitting and on point. He stated that the Bishop accused innocent men and let them die. Then he gives him 30 pieces of silver to pay the devil. In the Book of Saint Matthew, it is said that this is the exact amount that the Pharisees gave Judas to betray Jesus.

@@leffew2000yes, I've read the Bible several times. Different versions too. You should read the book of Judas because supposedly Jesus ordered Judas to turn him in so that he could fulfill the prophecy. And if you think that's nonsense, well, just remember that the entire fairytale is nonsense.

Sean Connery did indeed "pop in." They wanted him to have a larger role, but they could only get him for 2 days of filming. Kevin Costner did try an English accent, but according to the director, it was so bad he was like "Yeah, don't bother."

I don't know if I hallucinated it in a drunken stupor or just wished it were so, but I really thought there is B roll of him trying his sweet Mickey Mouse heart out online somewhere, I'm sure ninja lawyers nuked it somewhere. But yeah I remember reading eventually even Costner said along the paraphrased lines of "yeah at this point I'm ruining the emotion of the act so I'm just gonna do it," and it's why "The Beggar Hood" has the......... "traditional.....?" accent in his scenes? (Kinda tickles me that the only scenes he's allowed to pretend to be British is when the character IN THE STORY has to stink. That was *NOT* an accident, lol Lord I loved this movie so much, so much growing up)

Reportedly, Costner wanted to do an English accent but the director refused because he couldn't pull one off convincingly. So throughout the movie anytime Costner became annoyed with the director, he'd start acting in accent. So anytime you hear Robin talk in something approaching an accent, Costner was angy. Also, it gave Cary Elwes the ability to say the killer line, "Unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent!"

I'm an Englishman and I couldn't give a toss about the American accents or the geographical inaccuracies in order to facilitate the beauty of Britain. Unfortunately some stupid vandal recently cut down the sycamore gap tree featured in the movie. This is the best robin hood movie ever put to screen. Sean Connery as King Richard, what a masterstroke of casting and concealing it from the opening credits. The additions of Azeem and Duncan add so much heart to the story. The score by Michael Kaimen is sublime. Excalibur (1981) is the best Arthurian legend put to screen. The three musketeers 1973 and it's 1974 sequel the four musketeers is still the best version of those tales.

A harmony of feeling, if being apart of something higher and more than yourself, and to the generations before you and letting it remain for the next. These right bastards stole all of that in one profane act they won’t be healed for some time and as you say, it won’t be exactly the same way or as much, but as near as one can make it. No.2 movie of 1991 and one of RH's great cinematic interations. Major shout-out for reacting to the extended cut (further plot/character pieces). This was Kevin Costner's next film after acclaim and awards including 7 Oscars for "Dances with Wolves" (1990). Great supporting cast at becoming the characters that are Robin's allies and enemies. Every piece of the film is as epic as it should. The film's song by Bryan Adams, "Everything I Do, I Do it For You" is among the greatest movie songs ever. A month before Prince of Thieves, there was another Robin Hood in the same year. An all British production, starred Patrick Bergin as Robin, Uma Thurman as Marian and directed by John Irvin. It went to television here in the U.S. while it was in theaters internationally (somewhat successful). Not only are their several films, But also several books and tv series of "The Hood". Before and after "Prince of Thieves", more historians have been studying more than the folk tale itself. That maybe he (Robertus Hood) and his exploits were real. The late Sean Connery's cameo in RH:PofT as King Richard, short but sweet. Much like 'Diamonds are Forever', his salary went to charity. He played an older Robin Hood in another classic, "Robin and Marian" (1976). The director of RH:P of T, Kevin Reynolds and Costner teamed up again for another masterpiece, "Waterworld" (1995).

The earliest recorded Robin Hood stories come from the early 15th century, but there's earlier references to the character dating to the 14th century. Whether or not he was a real person is something historians really have no clue about. In the earlier stories, Robin was not a nobleman, and the king was Edward, not John. The story was retconned in the 18th century as he became more popular among the aristocracy and they started producing stories which made him a bit more relatable to them. The stories also became more political making Robin Hood into a resistance figure whereas in the earlier stories he was just a bandit.

Great Reaction as always, Jenn. Some facts from this movie. Alan Rickman turned down the role of the Sheriff twice before he was told he could more or less have carte blanche with his interpretation of the character. Cary Elwes (Robin Hood Men In Tights, The Princess Bride) was offered the role of Robin Hood, but turned it down because he thought the plot was too contrived. During an interview given on British television. Alan Rickman revealed that he had broken "about ten swords" in the sword fighting scene with Kevin Costner.

Now you're ready for "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" by Mel Brooks. One person that was left out was Prince John. He was the main 'bad guy' and the sheriff was his major goon in the legends.

Alan Rickman literally stole the show - all the most hilarious and memorable lines “cancel Christmas… with a spoon… and bring a friend” are his. He did not like his role in this very much so he “rewrote” his lines with the help of some comedian friends and man did it wrk. He was a master actor - I mean… as terrible as the Sheriff is when Mortiana tells him she is his mother… the total devastation in his face and eyes… somehow you actually feel sorry for him.

Jen, Alan Rickman was originally from a town named Acton, West London. He was there at one time after filming Robin Hood. Two young brothers were trying to ask their mum if they could visit the local park, Alan overheard this. He then said to them all to go and have fun, by order of the Sheriff of Nottingham.

"Where is this" that is the white cliffs of Dover in the south coast of England Jen. When Robin lands in England and the kud climbs the tree, thats the famous Sycamore gap tree. Its situated in the gap of Hadrians wall (built to keep us Scots in!) Its been in a lot of gilms and was recently chopped down for no reason by vandals

Kind of funny he lands at Dover then walks to Sycamore Gap which is 400 miles away! Would'nt he have to walk past Nottingham to get there? 😄 Handrian's wall was'nt built to keep the Scots in, it was to keep them out! 😉 In truth Hadrians wall has nothing to do with the Scots it was built by the Romans when they occupied Southern Britain to keep the Barbarians (Picts and other tribes) out. The Scots would not arrive until after the Romans left hundreds of years later the Scots would invade from Ireland to conquer and colonize the land. Although i imagine it came in handy later. 😉 God Bless.

I have that Bryan Adams song etched into my memory forever. When we were kids my older sister would record the number 1 song each week off the radio on cassette tapes. Everything I Do was number 1 for 16 consecutive weeks in the UK so this song was played in our house more times than hot dinners I had eaten up to that point of my life.

One of Robin's men who apprehended Marion and her maidservant was played by Jack Wild. Older people may remember him from the movie Olver, in which he played the Artful Dodger. And shortly thereafter, he starred in the children's television show H.R. Puf'n'Stuf.

This film was all we could watch, every day, for two long months. Even though I had my Gameboy, this was always playing in the background slowly driving everyone mad. I still watch it whenever it's on TV but it reminds me of a terrible time.

This was the first movie I ever went back to watch a second time in the theater. There are so many great characters and iconic scenes (staff fight on the river, witch doing really gross prophesizing, the Maid Marian reveal, etc.), but come on... If we're being honest, Alan Rickman absolutely steals the show. The line when he's asked why he'd use a spoon and not an axe to cut out Robin Hood's heart and replies, "because it's dull, you twit; it'll hurt more" is one of the most memorable movie lines from my childhood. Alan Rickman has had so many iconic lines over the course of his career, but that's the one that go me. He was so evil in this, but was so entertaining doing it.

The music is by the late Michael Kamen, who really deserves to be as familiar a name as James Horner etc He scored Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Highlander, and a whole load of other memorable films - and the TV series Band of Brothers. In fact, some of the music in BoB is recognisable as a reworking of the Robin Hood theme...

The Disney fox Robin Hood was my first, too. 😊 Michael Kamen's another of the greats. They used the music from this as the Morgan Creek logo theme music for years after this. And this is one of those movies when I prefer the theatrical cut to the extended cut. 👍 Oh yeah, Connery played Robin in another version from the '70s, i think. It's called Robin and Marian.

I worked for the guys who did the soundtrack/dialogue/sound for this movie and it was a MIRACLE that they were able to piece together this film from what they had. (Dialogue tracks from several different recording sessions - some with accents, others without - there wasnt the time/budget to bring back the actors to re-record any of it... so editors were forced the make-do with what they had. And it took months to piece it together.

Some follow up suggestions: Now that you've seen Prince of Thieves, you absolutely need to watch Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men in Tights, an amazing parody of this movie. For more swashbuckling fun, Disney's The Three Musketeers and The Man in the Iron Mask For more Christian Slater, Kuffs (it's a little obscure, but SO much fun) or Heathers (the original Mean Girls, but darker) Hope you check them out! Some seedlings were made from the genetic material from the original tree and they just sprouted a couple of weeks ago.
