That spoon blank preparation and in particular the hollowing out operation was simply stunning. It's one thing to watch it being done, quite another to do it yourself. Hats off to you sir!

Thanks Robin, Simple and clear inexpensive materials too. I've just received one of your excellent carving axes. It's great! And it came with edge well protected from UK to Pennsylvania. I've axed out three spoon blanks with more ease than with my heavier axe and now I like the one from you the most.

Robin, this is another fabulous video! You make it look so easy and having tried it, so did we ... after a few attempts. We haven't used the water stones since. We couldn't find the self-adhesive wet and dry, but a little PVA works fine with the standard 'Motosave' sheets :-D Time to do the drawknife (do you fancy doing a drawknife sharpening video?). Thanks again.

I find with edged tools, especially if I'm a bit uncertain that day, that colouring the edge with a black felt tip will tell me how I'm doing for angle and coverage.

Hey Robin, greetings from Iraq! Great video, wonderful new series of videos that you have produced. With all the research that you have done for your book, which is great by the way, i wonder if you realise that you are, through these videos, laying down the history of our craft as we understand it now that will hopefully be referenced in years to come. Thanks for taking the time to share these skills with the rest of us. Mike PS not sure if Sandra has sent my axe to you yet but i am really looking forward to getting some time with it when i get home.

hi! i just got an axe which is very dull and just by my personal opinion the angle for carving purpose is too wide. can you give me some tips on which angle ia the best for carving axe and with which grid of sanding paper to start to get there? thank you!
@WoodToolsSheffield
@WoodToolsSheffield 7 жыл бұрын
altering the bevel is not so easy and requires much more metal removed than you will achieve with paper. The angle should be between 25 and 30 depending on the hardness of the steel in your axe and the hardness of the wood you are working. If you don't have a powered grindstone or linisher then a good new coarse file will do the job well.

Hi Robin I am a total newbie,just brought a bundle on eBay your axe and spoon gouge, 3 rolls of grit paper. When you use the broom pole for your knifes and last board shown in this video with the polish cream do they have leather stuck on? Thanks

What's the angle on an axe? I heard that it's often 20 degrees, 20 separately on both sides or 10 degrees that end up producing a 20 degree angle?

Don't know if you are still responding here, but I am guessing that to start off with an axe, you first grind on a wheel, leaving a convex bevel and then sharpen and hone after??? If there were Star Trek Transporters, I would come over for a play date....
