Is it though? "A rain dirty valley"? That doesn't actually make sense. Never been said before or since. It's just there to fit that into that gap. A rain-dirtied valley might be slightly better, but it's still pretty poor lyrically. Rain doesn't make anything dirty. A mud-dirtied valley is probably what they're aiming for.

The legend of Brigadoon is the story of a mythical village in the Scottish Highlands. The village became enchanted centuries ago remaining unchanged and invisible to the outside world except for one special day every hundred years when it could be seen and even visited by outsiders. This enchanted day is spent in joy and celebration. Those who happen upon Brigadoon may remain in this beguiling place only if they love another enough to give up the world outside.

Yes, and they also had here - for a brief moment - the great Karl Wallinger on keyboards. He's a musical wizard in his own right and went on to create the band WORLD PARTY known for the song “Put the Message in the Box” and many other fantastic songs. Too bad Mike Scott and Karl Wallinger were unable to co-exist in the same band for longer than this album. Cheers 🍺

Mike Scott is a national treasure here in Scotland, originally from my home town of Edinburgh, and this is a stone cold classic. I'd highly recommend Fishermans Blues for a rabble rousing banger. The keys player here in the video is Karl Wallinger, and I'd also recommend his own band World Party who had a massive hit with 'Ship Of Fools'. Unfortunately that track still resonates now, given what we're going through in the world with all the conflict and lack of true leadership. Ho hum...never mind, stay positive and keep dreamin' guys!!!!

WOW! I'm truly amazed you guys reacted to this song. It's one of the greatest songs to come out of the 80's. To me, this song brings out so much emotion, intensity, drama with a twinge of sorrow, and most of all, it's ends as uplifting and inspiring. It tells you that reaching for the stars is worth it, even if you fall. *Especially* if fall. I will love this song forever. Edit: And yes, this is a great song for dreamers. 😊 BTW, the band played the song live over the original track, so it's essentially a live performance. Thanks Jay and Amber.

This is one of my desert island songs. The layers and textures are perfect. I love the second half when the girl adds a simple backing harmony. One thing to consider... there's some confusion, frustration, and maybe a little envy in this song. "I wandered out in the world for years while you just stayed in your room" and the last line in the song "how the hell did you see the whole of the moon?" Just a thought. Thanks guys. I am blown away that y'all have found The Waterboys. They were (and are) one of my favorite bands. They were coming up about the same time as U2, and if there was nothing but justice in the world, The Waterboys would have become every bit as huge as their Irish counterparts. But that did nae happen. Y'all want more? I have got you covered. Check out "Somebody Might Wave Back" "All The Things She Gave Me" "A Pagan Place" "Church Not Made With Hands" "How Long Will I Love You?" "A Life Of Sundays" "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy" "A Man Is In Love" "Old England" "Be My Enemy" (

Wonderful to see you cover this inspirational and magical song. A friend played me this song at University - she played it to me as though she was passing on a mystical secret and that's what the song has always felt like to me. It's like a spiritual experience. I absolutely adore the female singer's backing vocals. Just sparkling and precious. Been having a dreadful time, thank you for reminding me of this song and helping me to lift my spirits. 💜

One of the finest songs written. So profound. If you want more horns from them check out their song 'Trumpets' which actually has lots of sax in it.

great choice! yes, the key lyric is how he saw the dirty valleys, but you saw Brigadoon, he saw the crescent, you saw the whole of the moon . . . Brigadoon was a magical castle in Scottish legend, as other commenters have posted. This song is fire, and Amber you are spot on with the lyrics interpretation.

To Amber, with all due respect fiddles are used a lot in country but guess where that tradition comes from? Scotland and Ireland! The Waterboys are Scottish and that was indeed a fiddle. We use it a lot in Scottish music.

@@Jagangela lol. Check out the studio version. The violin player is a little more restrained on that one, and IMO it's for the better.

This song made the rounds on local radio, but never stood out for me until I saw this video. At the time, most videos were either overblown mini movies, or budget throw together pieces - filming live off the floor in a single take with incredible sound and lighting just wasn't done at the time. The energy in this live version exceeds the studio cut, but the entire This Is The Sea album is a joy from start to finish. Keyboardist Karl Wallinger soon left and started World Party - a band definitively worth checking out - and, in my opinion, he took with him their pop sensibility. Without Wallinger, The Waterboys went in a more Celtic folk direction and saw little mainstream radio exposure afterward. That being said, Fisherman's Blues, which did come after Wallinger's departure, is likely their most popular song.

Fisherman’s Blues is another Waterboys classic. The keyboard player singing at the end is Karl Wallinger who went in to form World Party (named after a Waterboys song). Underrated powerhouse of a songwriter and a great band in their own right. Check out Is It Like Today, Way Down Now, Ship of Fools… Amber, you’ll love the lyrics to Message in a Box.

Two years and they have never reacted to Sarah Vaughn, Toni Braxton or Mariah Carey. Been asking for Evelyn Champaign King. Sisters get the shaft on this channel. Have to hear 30 obscure British bands to get one reaction to sisters. En Vogue has some of the highest view counts and they have reacted to them only twice.

Karl Wallinger, on keyboards here, founded his own group, World Party, in 1986. Check out their early hit, “Ship of Fools,” although a lot of stuff on their first three albums is quite good. Smart pop/rock songwriting with a slight psychedelic/hippie tinge. You guys would probably like them and their vibe.

Great you discovered them. Mike Scott and the Waterboys are a rabbit hole with different styles. This one is off This Is the Sea, one of the best albums of the 80s and the last of their "The Big Music" phase where they mixed art rock, prog, post punk and put it out big! Then you have to visit their follow-up album Fisherman's Blues, which is Irish Punk Folk similar to The Pogues but more sophisticated.

One of the greatest bands to come out of the uk. Their best song is, A Bang on The Ear. Which is a slang for a kiss on the cheek. You will love the lyrics which start out with a boys first love to being with the love of his life years later. ❤😊

Also worth checking out is The Waterboys spinoff band, World Party. It was formed by and around Karl Wallinger, the keyboardist in the video with the granny glasses. They had some really great tracks. I recommend "Message in a Box", "Way Down Now", "Is It Like Today?", "Ship of Fools", and "She's the One" (which became a major UK hit for Robbie Williams a few years later).
