Billy Gibbons is a huge car enthusiast, and this 1932 Ford Custom is one of his prized possessions. Videos like this are why MTV was invented. And ZZ Top was already about 15 or more years into their career, so they weren't really "young" at this point. They were well established, but the MTV thing was new for them.

This is 1 of their more Pop songs, which is a great, feel good song. If you want to hear Billy's true guitar talent then "I Need You Tonight" is a must. Just like David Gilmore, you don't need to play fast to make music that hits you in the chest. In my Top 10 guitar solos, Comfortably Numb has 2 solos in it, while "I Need You Tonight" has 2 more. Get that? 4 solos in the Top 10 are in 2 songs. 2000 Blues is also a Goodun.

Billy Gibbons was originally in a band called the Moving Sidewalks. He hooked up with Frank Beard and Michael "Dusty" Hill to form ZZ Top. Billy says they chose the name so their records would be in the very last record bin in the music stores, so they wouldn't be overlooked and were easy to find. Anyone who ever shopped at The Wherehouse or Musicland knows that strategy worked.

Eliminator was ZZ Top's biggest selling album, in large part due to their videos. Their music has always been amazing, but they tapped into a new audience with these videos and the MTV world loved it and so the videos took on the theme and the car was the main attraction. The guy who gets bullied or beaten down then comes out on top with the car and the girls. PERFECTION!

Being a 60's/70's boy I still prefer the Texas Blues "Little Ol' Band from Texas" version of ZZ Top -- but you gotta hand it to them for adapting to the 80s without completely losing their souls. Always really well-played and well-produced songs! This was their first album and first single where they went with a very very basic beat and some synths and some 80's style and it took us fans a bit of time to adjust but we got used to it. I only rarely changed the station on this song (mainly if already heard it twice that same day) and most of us older fans got used to it in fairly short order.

More pop singles from a blues band. Check out "Things I Used to Do" or, just about any other song they did, on their albums, for their real sound. Jimmie Vaughn, lead guitarist, was Stevie Ray Vaughn's older brother, taught SRV lots of what he did. Jimmy is also a collector of Hot Rods and Custom cars, as is Billy Gibbons.

ZZ Top's 70s music was more blues rock... This is their 80s sound. Try some of their older stuff like "Blue Jeans Blues" or the medly "Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago". Edit: Oh I almost forgot... "Tube Snake Boogie" Dang that one will get you chair dancing... if you like a thumping bass drum you should try "Velcro Fly" by them.

I love how Billy came up with the song (Cheap Sunglasses). He said that he and his wife went to the store. He got to looking at the stuff in the store. He said he could have bought anything in the store including the store. But, the only thing that he liked was a dollar pair of cheap sunglasses. Only Gibbons.

This is from the same album as Sharp Dressed Man so the videos came out around the same time. It kind of a shame that your exposure to bands is from KZfaq and not buying an album, reading the liner notes and going song to song. Bad Girl, Legs and Got Me Under Pressure are others from that album you should do. TV Dinners is worth a listen as well.

This was 1983 after they had been together for over a decade. They had perfect timing with the MTV phenomenon and this was a series of videos they did for the Eliminator album (Legs, Sharp Dressed Man and this one). You should check out their earlier work without videos, Just Got Paid, Tush, Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago. Heard On The X, Arrested For Driving While Blind, I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide, Cheap Sunglasses, Pearl Necklace. All before this album. Enjoy, it’s quite a Texas rabbit hole for y’all.

Best ZZ Top trivia ever..... The iconic beards ZZ Top are known for was an accident. After one of their albums they took a break and didn't see each other for over a year, when they met back up to record again, both guitarists had just happened to grow chest length beards during the break. They kept them afterwards for the unique look. The great irony? Their drummer, who didn't have beard.... is named Jim Beard.

ZZ Top were a bar blues band in the 70s. Then they went to a Depeche Mode concert and loved the synths and more eletronic sound. The result was the Eliminator album, these videos, and their 80s surge to superstardom-- and also a *huge* divide in their fanbase between those who prefer the 70s blues and the 80s synth-y blues/rock. (Me? I like 'em both.)

They were a boogie band from Texas. That's where they developed that distinct sound with the distinct bass riffs. All the videos from their Eliminator album have that ZZ Top Car theme.

Their song "La Grange" has that rough deep raspy sound to it. "Legs" is one of their most iconic videos...this car is featured in most of their videos. They tell stories in their videos...they're always giving someone the keys.

Funny thing about ZZ Top also is the drummers name: Frank Beard, when he's the only member without one. Also Mark Knopfler based his guitar sound on "Money for Nothing" on ZZ Top, because they were all over MTV in the early 80's and that song was based on the comments he heard store employees make about the TV';s in the store wich were tuned to MTV.
