The phrase "haw, haw, haw, haw" is an homage to a brilliant and seminal Black blues guitarist, John Lee Hooker, and his song "Boom Boom." Damn good song, well worth a listen.

It was around for many years until it was raided by the authorities, by order of a religious zealot governor, who apparently had some skeletons in his closet. It was illegal back then and still is, unless they later legalized prostitution. I thought only Nevada had legalized it.

La Grange is a town in Texas. There was a brothel just outside a town called "The Chicken Ranch". This is what the song is about. The movie musical starring Dolly Parton THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS is about this place. Billy Givens is a big fan of blues singer JOHN LEE HOOKER and the sounds he makes are the signature style of Hooker. There are many ZZ Top songs in the blues style of MISSISSIPPI DELTA BLUES or sometimes referred to as MEMPHIS BLUES. WAITIN' ON THE BUS/JESUS DONE LEFT CHICAGO and BLUE JEAN BLUES are prime examples of this. In the 1960s Billy Givens opened for Jimmi Hendrix.

Ur right, its s song about a House of ill repute( WHOREHOUSE). I love it. It was in business for over a 100 years. Called it the chicken ranch because, during the depression they couldn't afford to pay the ladies. So they payed them with chickens. There was chickens everywhere. Therefore chicken ranch. 🤣😂🤣

RIP Dusty. I love that they honored Dusty's wishes with continuing the band and are keeping the music going. One of my favorite bands from an early teen up into my 50's their music does not disappoint. One of my favorite side notes for Billy Gibbons is when he drops into a tv show guest appearance as something more than a musical guest but actually made at least a little part of the story as he did in Bones. He plays the protective hard ass father type just as you'd expect from an old Texas, hard knocks, rocker, hot rodder that he is.

In 1975 or 76 our group was heading to the ZZ Top concert all pumped up. We loved ZZ and could hardly wait. The opening band was Kiss. None of our group had ever heard of them. After the show, all we could talk about. was Kiss. I looked for their record the next day but was told it hadn't been released yet. The rest, as they say, is history. I'm 68 years old and still remember it . What a treat - ZZ and Kiss together for the night.

I would also recommend their songs "Sharp dressed man" and "Tush". I would look into Foghat ("Slowride"), Bad Company ("Shooting Star"), Nazareth ("Hair of the Dog"), Free ("All Right Now"), and Blackfoot ("Highway Song"). Hmm, I think I'm getting a little better editing my comments. There's just so many amazing artists and songs that I have a really hard time narrowing it down. There's a reason I can never pick a favorite.

ZZ Top combines the authentic Delta Blues of their black blues heros from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, combined with rock, but they have deep blues, rocked up songs, blues rock, and even Elvis covers. Their 70s songs are amazing (Just Got Paid, Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago, Tush, Francine, etc.), but also their 80's videos (Gimme All Your Lovin', Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, Rough Boy, etc.) are incredible and were hugely influential on the MTV generation. ZZ Top got respect from black Delta bluesmen, classic rock gods like Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, and even more modern bands like the Foo Fighters. And they're still together and touring with their original lineup 52 years after forming.

Have Mercy! I've been lucky enough to see them about a dozen times and I've never seen them drop a beat or miss a lick. MTV made them widely popular but I've listened to them since '73. The furry guitars have been called "Texas Muffs'", um... for some reason or another.

Three guys, 2 guitars, one drum kit. That's ZZ Top. In the 80s they did "She's Got Legs", "Sharp Dressed Man", and many others. Billy Gibbons was also on the TV series Bones, and played Angela 'Pearly-Gates' Montenegro's father, and a very scary dude at that!😄

These dudes were menaces back in the day. On one tour, they brought along damn near a zoo! The Worldwide Texas Tour was legendary. Unfortunately, I was too young to see them then, but I have seen them several times thru the years. Always a great show. You reacted when they showed their clothing. Check out the tune, "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" for a hint of their true swag. Ha ha haaaa The title sez it all.

Most awesome concert move ever....the stage was all purple and all you could see was white fur spinning guitars...I don't know how they did that in say 1985, but it was memorable all these years later.

La Grange was probably the main single from their 1973 "Tres Hombres" LP. My friends and I used to crank this to 11 in our cars back in the day. Great album!!!

You should watch "Sharp Dressed Man", "Legs" and "Gimme All Your Lovin". Some fun videos for sure and lots of vibe. When I saw them in concert, they had their signature Fire engine red '33 Ford Coupe they called the ZZ Top Eliminator (from the Official videos) on stage with lots of girls coming out of it. It was so great! As for hearing it in a biker bar. You got that right. Rode for 20 years and ZZ Top was one of our top bands we listened to. We loved the Southern Rock more than anything else. Rock on!

After finding your channel several weeks ago, I’m just now going back and checking out your early stuff. Glad you found ZZ Top to be a Vibe! Being from Texas, upon reflection, I’m kind of surprised I only saw them in concert once, and that was as the opening act for the Stones at the Cotton Bowl in ‘81. The Stones sold out 2 shows and the first show was held during a torrential downpour. Thankfully, we were at the 2nd show, which was under blue skies, but with a stiff cold wind. Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill (RIP) had their beards blowing in tandem! The first act that day was the Fabulous Thunderbirds, including SRV’s older brother, Jimmie. Thanks for bringing back the memories!

ZZ's been around for decades! You don't get out much, if you ain't heard a single song from ZZ Top! A 3 man Texas band! And they have always been top notch. ZZ has entire LP's of hits! Sharp Dressed Man, Pearl Necklace, on and on the hits go! Billy Gibbons, the singer of ZZ Top, is also deep into blues music. He's cut some blues tunes on another label and you can hear him host a blues special on BB King's "Bluesville," on XM radio...

not only were the guitars fuzzy ,they were attached to belts around their wastes, essentially belt buckles. but they rotated! and they were hot pink! during a brief pause in a song w drum fills they ,in unison, spun the guitars a full 360 then continued playing. imagine watching theses "swag daddy's " on stage w spinning pink fuzzy guitars!!

You should watch a video of them playing their fuzzy guitars. They spin them in sync in the middle of a song. They put on a great show with just their music and showmanship. Saw them back in the mid 80’s.

What am I saying. You can't go wrong with ZZ Top. Just listen to them all. They got over 20 albums, included Live and collectibles, and an endless play list.

One of the most under appreciated guitarists in rock. BTW, I live just outside La Grange. The little town of about 5000 people has had only one claim to fame, the brothel this song is about, known as the Chicken Ranch. It got that name because during the Great Depression they'd take chickens in trade for their services. The place was pretty famous, though still technically illegal, during its time. Closed down in 1973.
