Out of the entire VGK-MTL ref'ing debacle, the high stick that bloodied Perry in OT was egregious. March took a baseball swing at the puck and sent Perry down to the ice in plain view of the refs.

Keep in mind, that back in the days, in 1993 as well, high-sticking with blood was automatic 5-minute major and game misconduct.. That's why it was a big deal with Gretzky's no-call.

Yeah...I'm generally not one for conspiracy theories, but I don't think it's absurd to believe that Gretzky was not called for that obvious high stick cuz it would mean him being ejected and LA losing that game which would have lead to a Toronto and Montreal series as the final. A delight for existing hockey fans to be sure, but the league very much wanted LA with Gretzky to win that 93 cup to solidify the sunbelt as a hockey market and continue growing the game stateside. I'm sure they were livid when Montreal ended up taking it in the end lol.

LOL The day I stopped rooting for the Leafs and became a fulltime Red Wings fan. I was 9 years old with a mother from Detroit and a father from Toronto. So I had family on one side sending me Leafs and Blue Jays gear, and the other side was sending me Wings and Tigers gear. I always rooted for both when they weren't playing each other but chose the Leafs when the two faced off. After that no-call and the eventual loss in game 7 I looked at my dad and said "I'm done. I'm a Wings fan" my dad looked at me with a smile and said "You'll probably live a happier life that way buddy". Little did I know just a few years later the Wings would turn into the powerhouse they were for over 2 decades. Now hoping Yzerman will lead Detroit back to greatness but I still root for the Leafs when they aren't playing Detroit. I just don't put as much heart in it. Got to get a new Felix "The Cat" Potvin sweater though. Those things are sick. Poor Leafs.

Looks like from the angle; Dahlin pushed with closed fists for all 3 shoves. Hands that were close together, Not using his stick to make it a cross check. With all 3 shoves. Mathews cross checked for both. The first initial retaliation before getting knocked down, and then again to the face after. Not using his hands to make contact and make them both cross checks with his stick. Same thing with the Ovi example. While yes, a soft call (maybe embellishment), still crosschecking. Hands wide apart not using to push the player, but using the stick as the point of contact.

This is the correct take. What Dahlin was doing was clearing Matthews from the net by pushing using his stick, but that's not cross checking. Happens literally 100s of times a game. Matthews on the other hand was a two handed full bore cross check to the head. That has to be a suspension every single time. No place in the game for that.

Exactly, Dahlin was pushing Matthews, not cross-checking. I realize there’s already plenty of representation of Wings disallowed goals in this video, but the one that pisses me off to this day is the waived off Marian Hossa goal in the last minute of Gm.3 of the 2009 series against Anaheim. That was the first time I’d ever heard of that “intent to blow the whistle” rule. The Wings had to slog through 7 games of that series and went limping into the finals. If that goal is allowed, maybe in an alternate universe, the Wings finish off the ducks in 5 or 6 and have just enough in the tank to beat Pittsburgh in the finals.

If you ever make a part 2, you need to talk about last year's game between the Jackets and Hurricanes. Carolina scores, but the Jackets challenge because of an offside. The refs somehow miss the offside and give Columbus a two minute penalty for delay of game as the period comes to an end. BUT! The refs actually realize during the intermission that yes, there was an offside, so coming back for the next period, they cancel what was left of Carolina's power play. But Carolina keeps the goal that should have been disallowed. I've honestly never seen anything like it before or since in my life

Hey there rob, I'm a ref. The first one for the "intent to blow the whistle", I've actually had to do this in local AA and A level hockey games. Usually for us, if we loose track of the puck, we have to blow it down, and if our linesman cant find it. And the intent to blow the whistle, You can't just blow the play down instantly, So giving the play goes on, the ref would probably blow the play down closer to a seccond earlier if we could blow the whistle down right then and there as we thought to. If our arms are going up, or we need to whistle it down, we do it. In our heads we think the play stops, and we react as quick as possible to stop the play, if after that little switch in our head for "dead play" is flipped, goals after it will be waved off.

The first one is actually even worse, the reason why the ref "intended to blow the whistle" was because he lost sight of the puck, because it was in the net. Scoring the goal was the condition that made it possible for the goal to be discounted. That whole rule is insane and it's a wonder it rarely comes up. That rule literally says that the only game that actually matters is the one the refs see. I've said it before and I'll say it again. "Let them play" is one thing, but when dirty plays are being made refs need to call them, because when they don't that's when players take matters into their own hands and players get injured. Honestly when injuries happen in games the refs on duty should get inquiries against them just as much as the players who committed the infraction.

I'm not a Red Wings fan, but the Brad May goal should've counted 110%. The whistle was after the puck was in the net. Today that play would be a goal after discussion with the situation room in Toronto. Many of these plays have resulted in rule changes, but it's sad that it takes a play like that to make a change.

It isn’t coincidence that a Canadian team hasn’t won a Cup since the 1993 Canadiens and who was the commissioner then? Right it was Bettman and he has really shown an anti-Canadian bias in his tenure. You don’t have to look any further than the infamous Game 6 between Tampa and Calgary where Gélinas had a perfectly good goal disallowed that would have won Calgary their second Cup, the puck had clearly crossed the line as well but nope the zebras 🦓 hadn’t gotten their complimentary glasses 👓 from SpecSavers.

Speaking of" back in the day " in general before goalies started playing the "flop around on their knees" style, wraparound goals were far less common. When I played in the dark ages of the 60s - 70s, if a goalie let one in like that the coach would go nuts on us for what was then perceived as "weak goals." How the game has changed.

Many years ago, New Jersey vs. Toronto. New Jersey knocks the Toronto net off to the point it was sitting backwards against the end boards. David Clarkson shoots the puck across the goal line and the Refs called it a goal because it would have crossed the line IF the net had been in place. Never mind the Leafs goalie has been knocked into the corner. The single dumbest call I have ever seen.

I can put up with some of the on-ice miscalls as I understand the refs have a great deal to watch and, as stated in the video, hockey is an incredibly fast game up close. The first time I saw a game sitting in row 6, I nearly lost my mind as I had always watched from the nose bleeds previously. It was a completely different game. What I can't stand is the Toronto reviewing group who have multiple angles of clear video and consistently f*ck up every single call when asked to review. They either don't know what they are doing or, somehow, have an agenda to pick winners and losers. THEY ARE TERRIBLE and, if that's the best they can do, the NHL needs to get rid of video replay and just suffer with the bad calls by the refs within the game.

I'm a bit surprised those infamous Hawks vs Canucks goals of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 playoff matchups involving the Hawks scoring goals with Dustin Byfuglien literally holding Luongo down on the ice creating an empty net and no goalie interference being called?! For the first 2 of those 3 series, the Hawks would win round 1 on those blown calls and one of them led to the Hawks winning a series and going on to win the Cup, that if you took away those illegal goals, would have gone to the Canucks, NOT the Hawks winning in 2009, 2010 AND 2011. In 2011, then GM Mike Gillis finally had had enough and called the league out for bad/corrupt officiating and with the world watching, the refs were forced to call the final 3 games of that series fair. The Canucks won and went on to come within 1 win of finally winning the Stanley Cup, before another rash of some of the worst calls costing them the Cup. I'm talking plays like Todd Marchand repeatedly punching Hendrick Sedin in the face, no call, Hendrick finally has had enough and facewashes Marchand, penalty! AND Canuck hot prospect, the speedy Mason Raymond, was causing the Bruins fits with his speed, until another Bruin ended his season by holding Raymond folded over like a pretzel and ramming him head first into the boards while crumpled up in a dangerous position, causing a BROKEN NECK which could have been deadly, no call, no suspension, the league saying that was a LEGAL HIT! LEGAL! Are you EFFING KIDDING ME!? Raymond missed most of the next season, and when he finally did come back from that broken neck injury, he was no longer the blaze of speed he once was and his career faded into nothing much. He could have been one of the game's big stars, but for all those blown calls. Had the refs been calling dirty plays all along, that dirty hit would likely never have happened as the Bruin who did it would have expected it to be 5 minute match penalty for intentional attempt to injure, and would also have probably meant him being suspended for at least the rest of the playoffs. Knowing those dirty plays weren't being called, they felt they could take liberties they may not have otherwise. I saw those calls mainly because, I watch mostly Canucks games, but I do know that crap goes on for many other teams and it needs to stop. I know the excuse is "let them play the game" by letting them not play the game and just play some sort of weird WWE/NHL hybrid game in the playoffs where the rules aren't the rules, they're just suggestions the refs and players can follow or ignore as they see fit. That's NOT "playing the game" that's ruining the game. Letting them play the game would mean calling the rules that define what the game is as fairly, and competently as possible. If a ref sees an infraction, JUST CALL IT. I don't care if it's the first shift of the first game of exhibition play and Joe Nobody breaks a rule on Auston Matthews, or overtime in game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals and Sydney Crosby just committed a penalty on Joe Nobody. If the rules say it's a penalty, it's a penalty, no matter who did what to who, or when. A penalty is a penalty is a penalty. Call it like that and I guarantee you'd have a lot less confusion about what will or won't be called, and a lot less controversy that's only a humiliation for the league and makes the NHL look like a bush league.
