This video will teach you how to manipulate the quality of any Climbing Hold to your advantage by executing proper Body Positioning and Directional Loading. Hold quality does not only depend on hold size and shape, which are characteristics that cannot be changed, but also on the climbers' ability to apply the principles of Directional Loading, which can be changed and improved!
As always, please like the video if you've got something out of it, feel free to share and don't hesitate to post your opinion in the comments down below, thank you for your attention and see you soon!

Brand new to climbing, somewhat of a late starter, though I’ve been hoovering up videos over the past few weeks...good and bad. Just wanted to say how impressive this beginners’ set is. For me it’s a perfect blend of theory and applicable technical demonstration. Not saying other ‘tutors’ don’t know their stuff, their climbing suggests they do, but not everyone can translate their personal knowledge and/or intuition into meaningful nuggets of information for others to absorb relatively easily. Will be sticking around this channel far more than I currently stick to the walls.

Thank you SO MUCH for making videos like this, and your more "intermediate" series of instructional videos. As someone that's pretty new to climbing, I'm really focusing on my technique, and your videos do such a great job of not only introducing an idea, but also breaking down how/why it works, and explaining when to use it and any other pro/cons. You do such a great job in breaking down more complex ideas into easily understandable parts, and I especially love when you draw in vector lines to explain how a climber shifts their weight in respect to their center of gravity as well as gravitational lines- super helpful!!! Basically, I just wanted to say "THAK YOU" and keep up the good work!! Your channel is a huge help to new climbers, like myself, that are looking to improve their techniques and climbing form, and not fall into bad habits :)

Mani, I have very mixed feelings about you. Person to person, I don't think we'd jive. However, as a climber and as a coach, I don't think there is another youtube personality who puts more thought into ALL the perplexities of climbing. You do a great job of isolating them and helping viewers understand how they work together. Keep thinking this way. I loved the line "now the climber must decide which is more important, the correct directional loading of the handholds or the footholds." Other teachers might have taught those lessons seperately or put out two seperate videos- but you are the only person I know who regularly takes contradictory concepts in climbing and makes them clear to the student. Great Job.

This series is so helpful. I am a new climber who didn't know much about it, and zero about proper techniques, without any climbing friends to learn from. You break things down really well and have helped me leaps and bounds in my approach over the few times I have been. Now every time I get on a wall I try to focus on your advice. Thank you so much, I will continue to have fun climbing and get better in great part due to your series. Keep up the good work.

I just want to drop a big thanks for making the tutorials for beginners and intermediates. It helps a lot when there isn't exactly a formal structure to learn rock climbing and it is important to get the theory part right first

The greater the amount of force perpendicular it a surface, the greater friction you get from that surface. That idea from physics explains many of the tips you give on getting better holds. The other idea is Newtons third (or second or first I don’t remember) law that says holds will push back with the same force you exert on it, but in the opposite direction. Ideally, you want the holds to exert forces on your body that are away from your body, which is why your heuristic about getting holds with directionality towards your body works. These two ideas from physics in combination explain all the tips you’ve been giving on holds and body position!

Very good explanation! Another exception to the rule (close to the wall) is on overhanging jugs. You want to hang straight below the hold with stretched arms to optimize energy.

I am a beginner climber, but I'm sure it was watching your videos on body position that allowed me to finally conquer a boulder route I could to do before. Part of the problem was also that I am simply not paying attention to great foothold options and instead myopically focused on my hands. Of course it is easier to focus on your hands as they are much closer to the eye. This has to be one of the most amateurish mistakes you would see, so I just want to point it out so you might address it.

I did like your videos, but I really don't understand why your face need to be in the frame ALL the time. Your voice is enough when you show climbing, you really don't need to add yourself in a corner. Were already looking at YOU climbing. It's called overexposed. Or simply put, unnecessary!
