When I first heard this album I didn’t like it. I wanted to hear him RAP and I wanted something crazy from him that I could relate. Then I played it again and realized just how special it is to have someone tell me a story about something I’ve never experienced (having to justify your love for someone and eventually losing yourself & your feelings for them bc they struggle to accept themselves, their sexuality and you by extension) and that’s when I realized how much more beautiful, emotional and impactful it was. I really understood what Tyler was telling me even though that’s nothing like my experiences, few have been able to do that for me. Love this album.

It’s his most pop album for sure, but it’s done on Tyler’s terms and that’s what makes it unique and why so many people love this album. Definitely a foray from his typical style, but it was an important chapter in his story and to many has been the pinnacle of his career. The reaction you had was that of many diehard Tyler fans at the time. It didn’t sound like Tyler, he was singing, it wasn’t what his biggest fans wanted or expected. I remember the night it released and seeing the response, it was ugly at first, but as the days went on people came to love it. He is called Tyler the creator, not Tyler the rapper. This isn’t a rap album and it can’t be confined to any label or genre, it’s unique and this uniqueness is why many consider Igor to be Tyler’s best work.

I can understand your lukewarm feelings on this album, personally i love It, but I'll say: Igor is a character on this album, it's his story and there's less of Tyler's usual tone because of that (that's the reason for the pitched up voice, besides wanting to make his singing more melodic) The tracks are all feeling based and production focused, because Tyler wanted to flex his producing skills like he had been on Flower Boy, but taking the focus off his persona to appeal to other mainstream artists and say "Hey, i could do this for you" I remember him saying that he even wanted Justin Bieber on Earfquake. But imo, the album is still uniquely Tyler even with all the Pop/Soul/RnB influences, it's just more subtle and meant to be absorbed as an experience. But i absolutely respect your reaction, i hope to see more in the future with different artists. 1:01:30 also no, that was Flower Boy, which was after Cherry Bomb, Tyler felt pushed by the negative perception and wanted to make something that was way cleaner, which is what Flower Boy was.

I'm happy so many people took the time to explain why they enjoy this one so much. There were so many elements that I missed on the first listen. I honestly think it's basically impossible to "get it" all in one, initial listen. It's subtle, but there are a lot of layers working together in this album. I can understand why people love it, just not quite my jam is all. Thanks for the great comment :)

I don’t know where I remember hearing this from, but you were right about saying that Tyler is just going to fall in love again, because at the end of the final track of the album, it ends off with a synth cord, that is reminiscent to the synth in the opening track, which signifies that the albums is kind of loop, all the stuff that happened to Tyler throughout the album just repeats, because Tyler’s love will just keep him chasing the person he is in love with. Hope this helps you understand the story of the album a bit more.

I understand that it’s not your favorite Tyler album but I think it’s his masterpiece. It was meant to be listened to front to back in one listen and that’s exactly how I did it. Which I think really benefits it as a story and cohesive project. I was in basic training when it was realized and I hadn’t heard music in 4 months prior to listening to it. I finally got my phone and headphones back in AIT and I could not believe how amazing it was. Maybe it was due to not listening to music for so long, but I still hear it the same way I did when I first listened to it. It is such a cohesive and well thought out project from someone that wanted to challenge themself and I think he exceeded with flying colors. Expectations might have ruined the album for some but I was so happy to hear Tyler expand his sound and release something so personal. Sorry for the long comment, I could talk about my love for this album for hours.

Tyler did an interview with Zane Lowe, it's here on KZfaq, were he explained his midset at the moment of creating Igor, the references he was pulling from and what he was aiming for with it. It's a very good interview, you might want to check it out. I think it could be sum up to: Tyler's music taste is very informed by 80's pop and R&B records and pop's classics chord progressions. So, with this records, and also in part with Cherry Bomb, he was trying to channel that. Also, his aim was more towards showcasing his skills as a producer and to stablish his value as a musician while trying to stir away a little from the "rapper" label.

This was the first of Tyler the creator I listened to and I think it was a great way to get into Tyler’s music. I definitely mainly listened to mainstream pop music before this but after listening to this album I discovered a new era of music for me. When I first listened to this album I thought it was pretty cool but not anything special ( I hadn’t listened to him before so I had nothing to compare it to) , after really listening to it a couple more times I realized just how great this lyrics and sounds were. Because of this album I have found new artists and songs that I connect with so much more like Brent faiyez, childish Gambino,MFDOOM, and Kendrick lamer just to say a few. I have also listened to Tyler’s other albums like cmiygl, flower boy and even some of his old stuff.

Which explains Igor, Igor is the sidekick of Frankenstein (Edit) also the buzzing that is in the start of Igor's Theme, is also at the end of Are We Still Friends, which means Tyler is going in a loop of if he wants to potentially ruin his life with this boy or be a normal person, but y'all know Tyler ain't normal😅 And btw it's EEE-GOR NOT IY-GOR, and I really think Igor has great potential to be a movie or something, maybe a short film

I’d never thought of this as mainstream before. But I can understand your reasons for saying so. Oddly, I found this to be the *most* edgy Tyler I’d ever heard. In part I think that’s because of the character and aesthetic that went along with it. Him in that blond wig, looking like some bizarre 80s flashback. Compared to the rapper version of himself, and compared to hip hop in general, the character and music of IGOR stood out like a sore thumb, and I mean that in a good way. I like other albums of his more, but it’s those, not this one, that I’d consider mainstream. Nothing else sounds like this, from what I’ve heard. Neither from him or anyone else. And to the degree that it sounds like others could have made it, it also doesn’t at all, because I find there’s something deeply discordant throughout the whole album. Regardless, loved your reaction. It’s 4:21am and I’ve spent the last several hours watching your Tyler album reactions. Can hardly wait to get to your Kanye ones. Thanks for putting these out!

I think Tyler's presentation on his music videos for Igor songs adds to its edginess. I think the edge comes from the raw emotions that are not limited by corporate marketable production. Every sound feels like a cry from Tyler himself. Igor is my absolute favorite album in part for that raw presentation.

Calling this the McDonald's of Tyler is so far off base, I laughed out loud. I know you don't listen to much rap, but there really isn't many artists that could go from an album like Goblin, to something like this. I get why some Tyler fans didn't like the album, but I feel it's mainly because of trying to put him in a box, and saying if he isn't saying something Edgy every song, you aren't going to like it. I personally think he went out and limb, pulled a backflip off, and nailed the landing. 10/10 album

As weird as it may sound, I do appreciate this comment. If it helps at all, this album forever altered the course of this channel. Lots of people told me to listen to this album again because there were too many elements that I had missed or did not understand. I gave it several more listens because of that and came away with a larger appreciation for the album. This has led to me now doing 'Additional Thoughts' videos, where I give albums several more listens after the first reaction, and post additional thoughts a few days later. IGOR still isn't my favorite from Tyler, but I can at least understand what he was doing with it and why so many people love it.

I HIGHLY recommend listening back to this album with headphones and expecting a story going in, not Tyler. This is Igor’s album, not Tyler’s. Even as someone who loves the sound of death grips, Peggy, Kendrick, and other super experimental artists and honestly hates most pop, this is my favorite album of all time. The story is so compelling and is told in such a perfectly complex way that brings out pure emotion without being too cryptic. It oozes creativity in the range and love put into it all and honestly it’s a miracle that some of the songs got as popular as they did.

I feel like in this album he is using the igor anology to tell a story of a guy who loves a man who's infatuated with a woman. Making igor the third wheel. And because igor doesn't have the mental faculties to properly process his feelings he just constantly repeats the smaller elements of those feelings in his head (explaining the constant repetition of lines). And is why his love for the guy almost sounds like one of subservience as opposed to loving his equal Also with your comment about Tyler wants to fall in love. I agree but I think the igor character doesn't want to because in his brain the guy he loves is the only man he's loyal to.

Igor To me is just so much more than just an album you really can’t put it in just one genre of music I like almost every track on the album one song I dislike or rather find it lacking compared to the other songs the story it tells the RnB influence the synths I don’t even know where to start the production on it could very well be it’s own thing Tyler really out did himself with this album 12 songs was just the right amount of songs needed to make this album simple yet so complicated at the same time if you really break this album down not only for the story it tells but it’s sound and production you could argue this is not a rap album or a RnB album or an album of one genre this is not rap it’s a form of art and imo is one of the most simple yet complicated records I’ve listened to and that’s because it has no category and to accomplish that as an artist that went from goofy smart and offensive but catchy lyrics to Making something like this is incredible and needs to be studied
