They aren't rock or metal but I'll never forget the girls from TLC ending up with, like, $50,000 to split between the three of them off an album that sold 15 millions albums. My memory might be a little hazy but it was something insane like that.

If we’re going outside of rock and metal (somewhat), than Chess Records definitely takes the cake of how they took advantage of their artists.

Warner Brothers were not accomadating to Prince & he was understandably perturbed by that particularly after the success of Purple Rain.

Purple Rain was just an introduction to what that man was capable of. I see clips today that put some of metal’s greats to shame. He was amazing! Shy really. But amazing. 😘😘😘🤘He was one of very few that were trying to show all people how to get out from under “the man’s” thumb. But he knew what I know, there’s too many Karen’s. The people, like in biblical times, have little faith. There’s a pill for every illness or anxiety. Sorry to say he proved that too.

Greedy Music Executives who probably have never played a Recorder, have killed off, Imagination, Enthusiasm, Originality, Good Story Telling, and Trust with musicians who want to be different, The Rock industry has suffered most with all this X-Factor, The Voice, Talent shows etc. garbage with only one person winning, who is generally the one who can Scream the highest. Trent Reznor had the same rant when I saw him on the With Teeth tour. Don’t buy our album, if you want to listen to it, steal it. I find it funny because here we are in 2024 and CD and Vinyl prices are at an all time high. I’m a CD guy and live in Canada. The average single disc CD is over $20, double albums are $30 or more, box sets are even more than that. Its insane, i still like buying CDs, but with the prices these days i cannot buy everything i want. i have to really pick and choose carefully the ones i really want.

Keep your eye out for $5-$10 USD CDs and $15-$20 USD vinyl LPs in new condition. They are more common than you might think on the internet. I’ll snag an $18 vinyl LP quickly if it’s an album I really like. I think $18 USD equals to about $20 or $21 in Canadian dollars, but I’m not exactly sure.

@@patepulkkinenvtec2403 Norman Sheffield was their manager and he (along with his brother Barry) owned Trident studios. Queen’s recording, publishing and managing went through them. He gave them studio time while also laying claim to the band’s output. Supposedly he was driving expensive cars while rationing out drumsticks to Roger. To be fair, the Sheffield/Trident put money up front for the early gigs, costumes, tours. Norman Sheffield later wrote an interesting book “Life On Two Legs”.

Absolutely true from what ive seen.I'm a fan of the underground heavy metal scene and i have heard a lot of those bands have gotten screwed over by these labels pulling this fucking bullshit about publishing and royalties. They were ripping these guys off because that music didn't sell millions. And they played all these games with those kind of bands because it's really about greed not art. A band like Celtic frost is a prime example of how they got screwed over in the 80s because they were doing something very different at that time and their record label was pulling all kinds of bullshit...canceling tours canceling videos messing with their albums productions etc...just insane and they got away with it back then. You gotta watch everything they do when you sign a record contract cause you never know what they're going to pull.

In modern day where artists have the tools/platforms to release their music directly to the world bypassing the gatekeepers like the record labels, you would think record labels would be irrelevant, but that's not the case unfortunately, a record labels are helpful for capital aka money which is basically a loan that the label needs to to be repaid and also can be in marketing and distribution which is a lot of work, some artists rightfully question what can a record label can do that i can't?

@jredehrlich26
@jredehrlich26 Ай бұрын
They aren't putting a price on creativity. Its everything else. I really don't want to defend record labels, but most of the positions in the video are misinformed or ignorant. The labels typically give the artists an advance, they pay for the album to be recorded, they pay for the marketing of the album, etc. All of which can end up costing millions to tens of millions of dollars. Around 95% of artists signed to labels actually lose money, and will never make back what the labels spent on them. Because of that the top 5% of all artists subsidize the remaining 95%. There are plenty of reasons to hate the labels and go after them. I just don't think this is it. If we went after all the companies involved in the music industry and stopped them from making money they would shut down, which means everyone from the receptionists, the pr people, to agents and the heads of the labels would be out of work. The ones who would take the biggest hit would be new up and coming artists. Sure the big names would be fine, but the little guys would never get the chance to potentially make it big. There's always 2 sides to each coin, the artists that complain the loudest are always the top artists, who are already worth millions, the same ones who claim to be looking out for the little guy, while simultaneously advocating for things that would directly hurt the same people they claim to be trying to help, and enriching themselves even more.
