So I’m a rocket league boomer, I’m the guy who works 7-4 in manufacturing and solo queues 1s and 2s (D1 and C1 resp.) for an hour or so a lot of days when I get home and it’s not my turn to cook. And I’ll say this, rocket leagues problem isn’t that not enough people have heard about it, I’m pretty sure everyone knows it exists. It’s biggest problem for growth is its biggest strength competitively: the gameplay is in stasis. This is what keeps me on, I don’t have time to learn a new game. RL racing is something I would play for a night or two, but it’s not replacing RL or TM (which I also play fairly regularly), but I don’t think I would download Fortnite to play it. I would assume that if it wasn’t it’s own game, it wouldn’t be fully fleshed out as it’s own game, more of a mini game. Anecdotally, a bunch of my friends won’t download epic games launcher because they are loyal to steam or hostile to epic. And at least one of my friends wouldn’t play TM (even though they watched me play and thought it looked really good) because they had to make a ubi account to do so. I think all your perspectives are a little off because playing RL and games in general is content and an economic opportunity, you make money off of RL. Most of us only stand to lose money playing games, so if there is something we don’t want to do (even if it isn’t rational, like downloading Fortnite at no cost to play a game we could possibly enjoy) we just won’t do it. Personally, I’d love to see RL2 in the new engine, and some actual love put into maps and limited game modes. New maps like oasis make me want to play, but new maps like the last neo Tokyo reskin are so bad they make me not want to play. And it seems like promo tie ins like Lightning McQueen are money makers too. But if the active and engaged community is saying something forcefully and repeatedly like “we don’t want to be a sub game in Fortnite” I would listen to them. New player acquisition isn’t something they should go all in on, especially since the best marketing is people streaming the game and saying on stream how much they like it and how much they’re having fun.

What Jack said still holds true. Most likely, RL will stay relevant for a bit more till they’ve squeezed all monetary gains. RL will never be as big or have the same pull as Fortnite. Moreover, we still have yet to reach December to see the influence of the decision. When trading leaves at least 1/3 of the community will be turned away and the remaining 2/3 of the community’s population may lean towards a different game in general (not epic related).

29:40 I think comparing Rocket League 'moving' to Fortnite, with DoTA coming from WC3, is actually the opposite of what we're seeing and shows a good example of why keeping a game seperate is actually much more beneficial. DoTA, when it was just a WC3 mod, was a niche game that had some popularity for 7+ years. Then League of Legends was made in 2009, directly inspired by DoTA, and exploded in popularity. Despite WC3 being a huge success and one of the most popular PC games of the 2000's, turning DoTA into a unique game (LoL) took it out of the shadows and the game exploded in popularity. From my view, moving Rocket League back into being a 'mod' of a game is very regressive and I don't feel like it shines any new light on the franchise since Rocket League is already so well known and ESPECIALLY because it has so many cross-overs with Fortnite already.

The things that you can achieve in a creative mode of rocket league will improve the marketability of the game tenfold. The shit that you can create in Fortnite will actually revive rocket league KZfaq, and give us so much more content than the seemingly 0 were getting from epic. And also, idk much about Dota, but maybe the game moving from a mod to an actual game, then exploding in popularity is because when they made it it's own game they could add a ton more content? That had a beneficial impact to the game, and RL being moved to a mod of Fortnite will add more content to the game IMO, increasing the popularity just like what could've happened to Dota. Although there's no way rocket league will be a gamemode of fortnite

Like playing Rocket League is nothing like playing a racing game, sure you drive cars but like that's where the comparison ends. Like if there was a racing mode in Rocket League that would be neat but I wouldn't be surprised if the Rocket League audience wasn't that into it cuz like the things that are fun about Rocket League are not present in racing

Step 1 - Rocket League Racing in Fortnite. This brings RL assets and gameplay into the UE5 engine. It also brings the RL IP into a space with a vastly larger audience. Step 2 - Rocket League in Fortnite. You've worked out the bugs of bringing RL into FN/UE5 with the racing game and now RL in FN is ready for primetime.

Rocket league racing needs to be mostly flying. The flying physics are not comparable to anything I've ever seen. Maybe a little similar to drone racing. But I already play these ring maps and obstacle course flying maps by myself. I'd absolutely love a trackmania style mode to race other people. Or even a mode with collision lol But for new people, you might be right. It's not easy to learn to fly in this game lol. And driving physics on the ground are NOT built for racing.

The problem with last episode was that you were basically all arguing from different base assumptions. Johnnyboi seemed to assume it's going to be just like rocket league but in fortnite, and got unnecessarily caught up in the point that Jack said epic would never give rocket league the same kind of opportunity and support to become as big as fortnite. Rizzo assumes it's a new kind of game in the same ip as rocket league, which interests him because he's tired of rocket league but wants a small step to transfer his audience to new content. Jack assumes it's a different thing than current rocket league and fears it will replace current base rocket league, and because he's still a big fan of the base game of rocket league he doesn't see it as a good thing for current rocket league. So you were basically all just talking past each other, because you never clearly started with stating what exactly you believe rocket league racing would be.

Missing the nuances a little bit. Yeah, Epic would never prevent RL from being a cash cow if things were to pan out that way and it found a new player base via Fortnite... But they're _never_ going to prioritize RL over Fortnite because the ultimate goal with Fortnite is to make it the platform on which all future games are made, so that Epic can take all that additional revenue in the same way that KZfaq takes revenue from every video posted to their website. They want the platform to be the main thing, and Rocket League just isn't as flexible as Fortnite in that regard. Plus it would make things confusing for potential content creators, they need a streamlined platform to compete with Roblox.

@@toddymcgann5856 which is why when RL went F2P they took it off steam and made it an Epic Games exclusive. Fortnite isn't the platform, the EG launcher is and with this logic, you are suggesting in order to play Valorant, I should have to launch League of Legends in order to do so. Would you like to do that for every single Activison-Blizzard game as well where you have to launch OW2 in order to access COD? It makes sense to take RL off steam and put it on their launcher where other games are so you're in their ecosystem, but putting an entire game into another game is beyond stupid and Epic already exposes Fortnite to RL through events and desktop notifications. Also, isn't this somewhat in line with one of the initial versions of RL? Like it was almost like a twisted metal type thing that spawned RL. Now theyre just bringing that back. Maybe they found that the development was really hard for twisted metal. And now that they have so many assets that are combat oriented, it makes that version of the game that much easier. They might be saving a bunch of development time by just taking the back end of fn to build the world of RL in ue5.

44:16 Surely Epic games would benefit from this, as it will lower the the hindrance from getting that dopamine and maintaining the cycle, ultimately increasing the engagement of users on the platform. But Releasing RL2 on Fortnite Creative would be bad for Rocket League as its own identity, as now RL will have to compete with other games including Fortnite for playtime which is a limited resource. RL is fun but so are other games, if we are predicting that releasing RL2 on Fortnite will bring new audience from Fortnite to RL, it also introduces RL audience to Fortnite and thousand other games to try, and we may assume some players will spend their time there. Again big W for epic, but it may reduce the conversion of casual players into RLCS audience. RLCS is a part of Rocket League's Identity. The number of passionate fans for RL could tank in future or i will be wrong and RL2 will be amazing and popular, hopefully Tier 1 esports. I don't want to launch RL2 from Fortnite because i don't want to launch Fortnite. If you can launch RL from both Epic games and Steam, the preference is given to Steam beacuse of the useful features added with it, but what if both have all the useful features, are literally identical except one have some annoying features. Which one would you choose. If they are gonna do it, they must rework their UI for RL2 to show that they equally love both the IPs.

holy crap the collective IQ of chalk cast is sub standard, but ffs it's so ridiculous to hear the rhetoric about "awww yeahhh the 'representative rocket league community' is all casuals'...", when the game has not had a "casual" mode since its literal inception. Even in casual you have an MMR. The GAME ITSELF, MAKES SURE, YOU CARE, AT SOME POINT, ABOUT COMPETING. It IS NOT conducive to a "casual" audience. If it HONESTLY were, we would have some sort of system for custom games that aren't tied to an MMR. Now, here's a theory, every "influencer" trying to take this kids game and make it their source of income through all the social channels is going to eat into the latest release of whatever through the item store, no matter what, because EPIC/PSYONIX STARVES ITS PLAYER BASE / AUDIENCE FOR CONTENT. And you're going to have people buy the thing from the children's movie, because children play rocket league. Wow. Incredible. That wasn't hard to actually spend oxygen thinking about. And another thing, the item store has been separated from trading since it was established? Maybe? I'm not sure. I wasn't there in the beginning, but things bought from the item store can't be traded... so they seem like separate issues (buying things from the store / losing a component of the game). Christ, I'm 13 minutes in and need to take a breather before continuing.

You're arguing with a brick wall. Just because there is no casual mode doesn't take away from the fact that the player base is mostly casuals? The game having mmr in casual does not make sure you care at some point about competing. And just because the audience is casuals doesn't mean that there has to be a gamemode that isn't tied to mmr. A gamemode with no mmr will have people who just picked up the game playing people of all skills, bronze to ssl. Does this massive skill gap sound casual to you? Casual modes need mmr. You're also acting like psyonix adding a kids car to a kids game is groundbreaking knowledge too. And you having to take a breather before contributing is a personal issue I'm ngl.

I'm glad you're excited for RLR and i see why keeping it in the FN ecosystem contains players to their platform. The problem some of are having is that leaves current RL as a stand alone game. Why download RL after playing RLR if i can just play something else instantly, to borrow from Johnny. I'd be excited if Epic communicated anything at all about the future of RL instead of acting like Valve. Thats why some people are so pessimistic, because the community is forced into all these "what if" scenarios. And based on the recent choices from the decision-makers (i refuse to call them leadership since they dont lead) at epic, we are further forced to guess that they will continue making poor choices for the player base. Im glad something RL is coming but with 0 comms and recent choices by epic brass, its brave to have as much hope as yall do for RL. RLR sure, but i dont see it for RL. Ight look, we gotta stop looking at current Rocket League as it's final form. We all know that they're working on UE5 Rocket League, and they're remaking the game from scratch. Every car, cosmetic, arena, everything, has to be remade for the new game. If they keep adding to the current game, that's more work for the UE5 team, because if they launch the new version of the game and it doesn't have all of the functionality of the current game on day one, then people will be disappointed. It sucks, but this is what transition periods look like. That would be my explanation for why Rocket League has plateaued. As far as racing goes or putting Rocket League entirely in Fortnite, I have other thoughts. Right now, Rocket League does not have the time or really the capability to add racing to the game. There would be no custom maps because there's no creator. Fortnite, however, does have a creator and has imported some Rocket League properties, so racing is much easier to implement there, at least as a testing ground. It might not even be labeled "Rocket League Racing", but more just a racing game mode that uses all vehicle assets in Fortnite. I don't think the mechanics of Rocket League would even translate well to a racing game. The cars are too light, they accelerate/ decelerate too fast, the cars don't lose traction, etc. It would need tweaking on the back end to make it really enjoyable. I think it would be a good way to introduce the idea of Rocket League racing, but ultimately it would benefit from being part of UE5 Rocket League or as it's own game. Rocket League being entirely consumed by Fortnite just doesn't make sense, they're completely different games with different development teams, they would need to coordinate updates and all of the players would have no choice but to install the whole package whether they play both games or not, which wastes space on storage drives, especially on console. From the conversations you've had over the past couple podcasts, you're not thinking about what Rocket League will be in the future, you're only looking at what it is right now, as if it will be on UE3 forever. Not thinking about the possibilities that comes with UE5, and the hard work they have to put in to get there makes the whole conversation irrelevant. All we have right now is UE3 Rocket League, but we know the update is coming at some point, so it's short-sighted to see the game as dying or being neglected when there is probably a whole lot going on behind the scenes that could make Rocket League a way bigger game than it's ever been. Where's the optimism?

But do we really know for a fact, that they're still working on UE5 Rocket League? Might have just been the racing game after all..

The common thread in the people supporting Jacks position seems to be, "we don't want that". This decision has nothing to do with what you want. That's not how this works. They make these decisions based on what the market will bear. If RL is on UE5 within Fortnite, I will play it there. We all will, don't kid yourself. And once it's there, the player base will almost certainly increase. It's a simple calculation that doesn't need to take into account "what you want".

The inability for the majority of people in the community to understand that Rocket League Racing is probably exactly what the game needs to get reinvigorated is baffling. I knew RL's community was one of the most toxic, but never thought it was this bad. The amount of bad faith in this community is astounding.

@@AwesomeNuke You know fortnite already has 100s if not thousands of game modes within it’s UEFN player base, which that player base does not include all of Fortnite’s player base cuz not all of them play the game modes at all. Then those that do play rl racing, it brings eyes to that yes but not rocket league itself. Rl racing will be nothing like actual rocket league, so enjoying rl racing isn’t going to mean rocket league will be the same experience for them. Very few will actually get on rocket league and care enough to learn how to play the game since it is very challenging to get good at.
