The one thing I don't want taken away is for the chance for those bubble teams to matchup against those top ranked teams with something on the line . It was clear at the beginning of the season the format was going to make top players uncomfortable, but I do believe it has grown the scene exponentially. I don't mind a day 3 best of five but I enjoy watching intense quals . And the fact is the more experience the players get with this format, the more consistency will emerge.

I would say that's where having offseason tournaments that can tempt the top teams in would do this job. Not having the top 8 teams automatically qualify to the next event is extremely short sighted and hurts players and orgs.

I feel that people are getting offended that Johnny has G2 out of the top 5 because Johnny isn't giving G2 proper credit for their playstyle. Listening strictly to the argument between Retals and Johnny on First Touch, Johnny was saying that every team that has played against G2, except from luminosity regional 1, has just played extremely poorly. Literally attributing zero percent of their success to the way G2 plays and attributing all of it to the opinion that every team has just played bad. Following that same logic, the Snowmen should also have the greatest game plan against G2 because they also took G2 to game 5 in regional 1, but it clearly doesn't work against the rest of Na. Another argument is that none of the players on G2 are "proven on lan" although beastmode and Dan dominated liquid (twice), Falcons, and Rule1 during gamers8 in 2s, and Atomic was Na's mvp and dragged his team through the wildcard this past year (with help from Jknaps). Yet because a last second team was formed in V1, acquiring Dan and just missing out on worlds by 1 spot means that Dan and Bmode CANT preform on lan??😂

Not to forget that Daniel used to carry his team in regionals and LANs alone, same for Beastmode. Now they’re together and improved individually too

I think a lot of people are missing the main point of Johnny's argument though. Johnny's rankings are very result-based, so the last international competitions he can base his results on are the world championships and gamers8 (which is less important than a world championship for Johnny). With that, how can Johnny put g2 any higher than the top 4 EU teams when they had much better international results recently? in fact, the most recent "international result" g2 had was against oxygen which they lost. So no matter how much g2 has improved, Johnny can't accurately judge how valuable a win is in NA, when almost all of the NA teams have had significantly worse results than Johnny's top 5 at the world championships. That is why in real sports it's difficult to power rank teams from different leagues, conferences, countries, or any isolated division, without international competition.

@@zap9044 When falcons had 0 proof of being good back in winter major, JB completely backed them and everyone said they haven’t been tested and are playing in a minor region. JB ended up being right but now it’s NA he dosnt want to back them because the stats say otherwise? I call bullshit. He’s a great analyst but he’s sometimes blinded by his bias opinions.

@zap9044 If we look at results, 5, 6, and 7 were all Na teams at last worlds. In the wildcard, Na was clearly better than Sam and Mena. In groups, the same pooly performing G2 that missed Boston, slammed Rule1 (the twins JB is rating so highly) and also fell to SSG, who R1 also avoided in Boston. G2 and SSG eventually lost to Bds and Kcorp (2nd and 3rd place). Falcons were the only team from Mena that made it to playoffs and arguably had a "mickey" bracket in groups with winning over two Sam teams that didn't look great. I just feel like JB is being blatantly biased but is justifying himself by saying, "It's historical evidence" even though Mena has only outperformed Na in 2/9 Majors (over the 21-22 season, 22-23 season and g8). I'm ok with saying the top 4 in Eu right now is better than G2, except for Gentlemates who I think had a very lucky run regional 1, but to say Mena is undoubtedly better than Na right now is just downright disrespectful and untruthful.

@@___.___.___.___ From what I remember, Johnny and some other castors backed the Falcons to win as his prediction, and they used the "surprise factor" as a big reason (the same situation happened with Furia). A power ranking on the other hand is supposed to rank the teams based on their current "skill", not how they would face off. I agree that what Johnny values when ranking teams is very subjective (like in his 1v1 player ranking videos), but I would say he is pretty consistent in sticking to his own rules across regions.

Golf isn't a good comparison to justify autoquals. There is a cut. In a typical event 150 people compete (combined from open quals and invitations) for two days and then the top 70ish make the cut. You aren't in the money until you make the cut. Right now top 128 in NA are in the money. To autoqual them you put you straight into the prizepool, which is just giving money you haven't earned yet. In golf you have to earn your money every single event which is brutal but fair.

Zoom out a little though, the top players are not having to compete in Monday qualifiers and play local hacks, they’ve earnt their spot. The cut in golf would be more along the line of the swiss stage in Rocket League or top 32 in my opinion. Golf obviously a much larger pool size / scale.

Is the game itself not entertaining enough for you? are you that bored you have to start instigating? The difference between banter and hate has to be based in reality. Tbates for example will be pro NA but he will admit his biases. Johnny masquerades and an objective analyst. Also while glazing NA Tbates will still give respect and credit to EU players and teams if they do well. This g2 team looks like the best team NA has ever produced and the amount of discrediting and minimizing that was done from a so called objective analyst who is supposed to know ball was crazy. Johnny earned the push back he got. It has been a long time coming.

The only time he gave respect to EU teams is when he could provide absolutely no twisted argument to say NA is better. That means EU needed to come to LAN and literally stomp NA for tbates to be like "alright, EU teams are as good as NA teams" and even then it came with bunch of lame excuses such as "we didn't have our best teams on LAN". Get real.

@@tvlover17 I had to stop watching FT because of how bad it had become - but tbates is way, _way_ worse with bias than Johnny. The best you can say for him is a reluctant acceptance of the EU dominance when there was literally no alternative argument to be made. He is notorious for hating on MENA and SAM to the point that guests like Jorby have had to stand up to them. And let's not forget, this is on an official Psyonix-approved podcast for RLCS. I think you might be watching something different to the rest of us.

When I talk to friends I think taking personal jabs is okay, but you were on a public stage. Taking a shot at a single play (which had realistically no difference, or really related to the argument) at one play that he had just is disrespectful. Loved you before, but ngl need to rebuild that after.

I enjoy the qualifier discussion, usually the what is a better format convos are a bit repetitive. I think it was relevant bc ferra was a guest and had his post open qual 1 tweet pre Shopify failing to qual. I would like to see some more discussion on different team play-styles and the main advantages disadvantages they bring. Maybe why EU has such on ball pressure and how that contrasts to NA play. Why certain matchups work (G2 Luminosity), m80 versus OG and why that was difficult for them. I understand the need for discussing items that tend to generate more views, but it would also be nice to see some more analytical stuff from analysts, coaches or players. They don’t need to give up “team secrets” or whatever but nice to get some understanding of the methods and conversations on why matchups work and what pros feel about them.
