🎥 Our ex-Google, ex-BCG Founder, Kenton Kivestu, does a 101 primer on product management, an increasingly popular function that any company building software, whether it's McKinsey & Co. or Microsoft, needs. In this mini lesson, we cover three key topics:
1) What does "product really mean?
2) How are product teams structured?
3) What role do product managers play within those teams?

Great video! Are the Products PM work on solely software based?

Nope, there are PMs on hardware products too (e.g., PMs on FitBit, etc) but the vast majority of PM roles out there are focused on software.

As someone who is graduating with an engineering degree this year, what kind of skills/background would I need to be a good product manager, specifically at Google? Are there many opportunities for PM's to write code? Thanks for the great content!

That's a good question but also requires a long answer! Re: writing code, in 99% of cases you won't be writing code. You may write some SQL, python to grab data and manipulate it for analysis but it's really, really rare that PMs write production code for the products they work on. And given what we talked about in the product org part of this video, that makes sense because engineers are focused on that and PMs are doing all the tasks that don't neatly align to a specific function. Re: skills, this is a very long answer. It's probably best addressed in the in depth posts about the skills needed / tested for in PM interviews here: www.rocketblocks.me/guide/pm/interview-hard-skills.php and specifically about Google PM interviews here: www.rocketblocks.me/blog/google-pm-interview.php Hope that helps!

What’s the difference between a Product owner and a Product Manager ?
@rocketblocks
@rocketblocks 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question - I personally find the title "Product owner" pretty confusing. Why? Because the few examples I've seen of this are companies where there are also Product managers - who are the effective product owners. That said, in those cases the distinction seems to be that a "Product owner" is a sort of jr. PM-ish role on relatively smaller products at that company. Finally, the "Product owner" role isn't something that exists at the leading tech companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. At those places there are PMs who own the product - a PM working on a smaller product or smaller chunk of product would just be a more jr. PM (e.g. PM I vs PM III) or an APM (associate PM)

Man, weren't you about career in consulting? Man I am am experienced SW engineer, and MBA aspirant. I am naturally proficient to pursue career in both PM and Consulting. How to choose?

I've basically had three jobs in my life: consultant, PM and entrepreneur - so from the lens of a career, you don't need to choose, you can do both! That said, I think if you're considering strategy consulting VS product management, a key dimension to consider is do you want to do more operational work or more strategic work? PMs get to ship stuff all the time which is both fun and messy. Consultants get to think about strategy all the time, which is fun but means they miss out on the fun of implementing things... I think some of the new roles that blend this like a PM at McK Digital could be a really cool hybrid.

@@rocketblocks hey, Thanks for replying. I love implementing too, but I came to an understanding with myself that my strength is strategizing, so I would pursue that.
