I think Bob Dylan once said that Bobby Vee was one of the nicest people he had ever met. Matter fact Dylan even sang one of Bobby Vee's early songs, "Suzy Baby." in a concert. Sad that both Del Shannon and Bobby Vee have passed on. Both extremely talented guys!!

I never forgot Del Shannon because he struck the golden chord---a teen smash hit "Runaway." When the British Invasion hit I was aware he was sometimes an opening act. Other acts like the Byrds took flight and US groups broke up or dispersed or self-destruct. Shannon made frequent appearances on Shindig or Hullabaloo, but no interviews. He never made it into Rolling Stone magazine and when he seemed to have dropped out, he made his Live in Manchester lp which I prize. Since his early death I realize he was the definitive rocker with an effective growl and a high tenor wail to the end, our Buddy Holly who wrote and sang into immortality. His 25 Greatest Hits cd is better than anyone else's, staying true to himself for his fans. His lyrics of teenage misunderstandings encased in brilliant production values will stand forever.

Gorgeous Del Shannon! Have only just seen this as I am fairly new to an iPad. If I were just listening to Del I would recognise his voice because he speaks like he sings! You are still a great loss in my heart. You died much too early and as a result many songs will never be heard. x

Tragic that these two rock icons had to be interviewed by two such clueless TV mannikins who bviously did no research prior to this on-camera session. Both men were '60s stars, not '50s -- Vee starting in 1960, Shannon in 1961. Given the rare chance to talk to these two guys with some 70 hits between them in depth, the male host takes the opportunity to step into irrelevancy by reminiscing about coffee bars! Her questions are mostly stupidly superficial, too. I was lucky enough to interview Del a few years before his death and just like Bobby, there was a great deal of depth to him utterly unexplored here. Regarding the constant references to nostalgia in this interview -- including bobby sox, which were a '50s thing, not '60s (!) -- as Rick Nelson put it, "if memories are all I sang, I'd rather drive a truck." The music of Del and Bobby is a lot more than stepping stones down memory lane. The heart of their music -- the portraits of human emotion they painted with sound -- remain endlessly timeless. We'll forever keep searchin' -- and the night will eternally have a thousand eyes.

horarwgt you are absolutely brilliant in your analysis, thank you. British interviewers are often clueless and artificial and that's certainly the case here and I agree it is shameful and quite alienating to have to watch.

That female interviewer obviously won her job based on her looks, not her isnight into her interview subjects. Yes, it is tragic that precious on-camera interview time was wasted by this clueless boobette who clearly has no idea what she was talking about.

They're promoting a reunion tour - of course the interview is going to focus on nostalgia. Yes it has a couple of awkward moments, but I don't think the tone is particularly superficial. Breakfast TV is never going to offer cutting edge interviews and probing questions, whether here in the UK or in the States.

It's sad that Bobby Vee & Del Shannon are no longer around. Del Shannon did look cool & dignified with his mustache. I figured this interview was around the 80's perhaps from 1983 to 85. Because they mentioned Boy George's name. In 1982 I had bought the "Drop Down and Get Me" LP by Del Shannon. I also had some records & tapes by Bobby Vee. Here in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1977 there was a station that every Saturday night they'd play nothing but oldies. The show on that station was called Memory Lane. On a particular Saturday night the DJ actually called up Bobby Vee. To our surprise Bobby Vee did answer & the DJ explained what it was about. The length of that show was 4 Hrs & Bobby Vee was on. Bobby Vee certainly didn't want to disappoint his listeners especially his fans. I still remember that Saturday night hearing that interview as it was conducted over the phone. The DJ said that on his Oldies show that most listeners would request Bobby Vee's songs. That was when listeners would call in to request songs. The show was called Memory Lane with Dan Daniels. I don't know if Dan Daniels is still around, because here in Corpus Christi,Texas he was well-known.

It's a shame that people like Del Shannon and Bobby Vee are treated in such a tacky way. There's a complete lack of respect and they're spoken of as if they're novelty nostalgia acts. Well, they mean more to me than that. Del Shannon was a great songwriter and passionate singer. Yet, in the first clip of him singing, it looks like he's playing at some awful holiday camp in the 80s.

Absolutely. Almost everything Del wrote was amazing. Top notch songwriter and amazing singer. Even his super stellar leading track from his incredible last album "walk away" was performed (or lip synched) on a corny morning show with the host talking to a puppet! Del's performance of it was great and the song so good, just to have it cut to that stuff at the end. (Video below) Del was amazing and deserved so much more, especially when the likes of tom petty and Jeff lynne adored him. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/htKJgJqE0pzLc5s.html

Aren't the interviewers almost relentlessly petulant in their questioning? "So Bobby, what's it like to be old?" "Really, how interesting. Do you regret being past it, or do you think, 'Why not make some money out of the old horse while it's barely breathing?'" The gents handled it with grace. Listening to 'Wouldn't change a thing' by Bobby Vee. Really nice.
