In this diy tutorial I show you how to make a long, full, layered tulle skirt. You can adapt this method to make the skirt the length or fullness that suits your design, and attach it to a bodice instead of a waistband if you're making a dress. Subscribe for couture sewing tutorials and inspiration, and if you enjoy my tutorials, please consider supporting me on Patreon - / rockstarsandroyalty
See how I made the petticoat to go under this skirt here - • How to make a long ruf...
I bought my bolt of extra wide tulle here - www.fabric.com/buy/0541954/10...
I talk about how much tulle I used at 12:34 and 13:01. One bolt is enough for this length and number of layers, but yours may vary depending on the length and number of layers you use. I used around 30m of tulle and around 4m each of lining and satin, but again yours might vary depending on the length and fullness of your skirt and the width of the fabric.
Welcome! I am a fashion designer and an advocate for unique self-expression. I want to encourage you to have the confidence to break free from fashion and beauty trends and to wear what you love.
In my videos I show you how I design and create the extravagant couture gowns and outfits that I've become known for, how I upcycle and style vintage and pre-loved clothes, and how I create accessories, hair, and make up to complete the looks. I also take you behind the scenes of my life and fashion business in my vlogs, and help you unleash your own creativity with my tutorial videos.

This is the ultimate princess skirt and this technique is so versatile. You could vary the length of the tulle layers to create different layers and skirt shapes. You could layer different colours of tulle together. You could add smaller ruffles or a trim to the edges of the layers. There's so many possibilities! Come and join me over in my Facebook group and show me what you create inspired by my tutorials and videos - facebook.com/groups/408803849559316/

Hello : ) I am in love with this tutorial! I will definitely be using this for my victorian ballgown project. Just a few questions. What does the gathering of the tulle do? I couldn't really see on the video since the colors were so similar but wasn't sure if it was just so it would fit better. Also are you sewing the bottom of the tulle down to the bottom of the skirt or just leaving it be? And if I was to use the tulle as a crinoline and put another skirt overtop would that look normal or mess the whole thing up? Idk lol. Thank you so much
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kiera, glad you found the tutorial helpful. Gathering the tulle creates the fullness. The tulle is just sewn at the top of each layer - the bottom isn't attached to the skirt underneath. Yes you can definitely use this method to create a crinoline. Just be aware that if the skirt you put over it is heavy it might lose some of the fullness. You can add some layers of a stiffer net underneath to help with that if necessary.

This is stunning! I'm just learning how to sew and after making tons of regular dresses I found that I really want to make a flowy layered dress with layers of sheer fabric. Not sure if you understand that explanation or not but I would like to make something like this but instead of tulle using a fabric that acts really flowy and is more elegant that tutu looking. And you know made to be worn on its own without overlayers. What would you recommend? thanks so much!

Hi, I’m loving your tutorials. I’m in the process of making this skirt and would like to ask about gathering the tulle. Do you use the machine to sew and then pull to gather or are you hand sewing and gathering? I’ve never made a wedding dress before let alone anything as elaborate as this. Can’t wait to see what I’ achieve I’m the end. Thanks
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I gather the the tulle by hand, then machine it into place. That's how I work best, but you could definitely gather using a machine stitch that you pull to gather or gather with a ruffling foot if that suits you better. Have fun creating 💖

@RockstarsandRoyalty

I used a soft tulle, the kind that wedding veils are made from. If you're using a tulle that's a bit stiffer you may need less in each layer or less layers to achieve this amount of fullness.

I’m planning to make a ball dress for my daughter and this technique looks excellent. I have a feeling a full circle might be too bulky for a child. Do you think a half circle skirt base will be ideal? Secondly, did you gather the tulle that you attached on each layer? Thanks in anticipation of your response.

@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. It just makes cutting the lengths of tulle a bit trickier. I usually cut the back tulle pieces to the length of the train and front tulle pieces to the length of the front then trim the difference once it's gathered onto the skirt. Hope that makes sense.

Hi. I’d like to thank you for posting this, it’s very inspiring. I’m actually wedding planning for my self and for now we’re going for something with a lot of roses (I guess it’s romance then), our principal colours are burgundy and gold, but as complementary colours we’ll use some light pink, dark pink, fuchsia, red wine (let’s say a palette of pinks and reds). Because of your video and because of Angela Clayton’s video about the skirt of the Fairy Flower dress, I want to make my own wedding dress, all by myself (as long as possible - I’m a more than beginner sewer.). I’ll have the Fairy Flower part as top layer and train, but with tons of roses (using my palettes of reds and pinks, of course) and using the Fortuna Gown to make it a little puffy. What will happen if I use some chiffon (nylon tricot or mesh) instead of tulle ? And if I use some chiffon solid fabric instead of satin ? I may or may not come back to you later, but thanks a lot !

I've not tried using chiffon or mesh instead. You'd be best to do a little test and see how if works. Your design sounds lovely. Have fun making it 🙂

Rockstars and Royalty thanks. Finally I fell in love with a wedding dress and I bought it but, I may or may not make a floral top layer skirt to go with it. Thanks :)

does anyone know how I can attach the tulle and an overskirt together to zip it all up as one skirt? I didn't really understand that bit in the video... Thank you :)

Would you mind sharing what is this method of construction called? With the sewn layers? Any time I look up other layered tulle skirts it is just stacked tulle. Thanks!

Thank you. It's extra wide nylon bridal tulle, the kind that veils are made from. There's a link in the description to were I buy it.

Oh man I love this tutorial! Just wondering how many layers in did the stitching underneath start to disappear? I'm following it myself with a half skirt and 4 layers in its kind of doing it but not that well.

It was fairly near the top that the layers started to hide the layer beneath, as the circumference gets smaller, the tulle is more gathered.

I’m really glad I came across this video. I am making a tulle skirt now and I am wondering one thing. The top layers (close to the waistline) of the tulle, are they also cut in straight pieces of tulle or in round pieces (in the shape of the circle underskirt)? I hope to get an answer on this. Thank youu

They can be done either way. Hers was made and gathered in straight layers. If you will be adding some sort of trimmings or appliques to the edges of your tulle, the topmost layer could be cut in panels too or as a huge circle
