That was a heroic level of digging and detailing! Thank you! I agree with pretty much everything you say about what's better in the US version and vice versa. Too much music intrudes in the imported cut. Much of DCA's efforts were intended to punch up the film for western tastes, but also to reduce the running time if at all possible/where possible: Low budget companies sometimes tried to eliminate an entire reel of a film over all to reduce shipping costs as well as to try to pack more screenings of the film each day, all geared toward increasing profits. DCA were 'editor heavy" in that regard, but I don't mean that to be too harsh about them. Overall they did---in my opinion---a pretty good job. In fact, helped the film to some extent. A couple of things about the effects---sound, visual and mechanical: I do wish DCA had substituted a different sound effect for those giant insects (I make no attempt to spell their actual name) since they sounded like squeak toys to me. I found a couple of the shots of those critters going AWAY from camera more effective than the front-on views, and wish they hadn't eliminated those. Another thing on that "wish list" is that I think the US optical guys had been asked to double-print---slow down---some of the action of those critters, even if that gave them that "strobing" look. Adding some post re-framing (tighter) and camera "shake" would've helped too. More potential was there. Also: It seems that the designers of the original would've been smarter to have come up with better eyes too. I know a certain amount of US doctoring of the visual effects was attempted (which I have yet to fully examine) included blurring parts of shots to eliminate wires (as well as pre-digital wire-removal done in the optical printer), re-framing etc. As i think you can tell already, some effects shots appear to have been removed strictly to cut down some that were considered "borderline" for American viewers. (I may be wrong about this, but I recall a shot or two in which the miniature pyro had punched a visible hole through the sky backing, caused a shadow on it and/or left spent-pyro detritus fluttering down behind Rodan, which I think may've been on the list of fix-ups that the US distributors enacted. I knew a couple of the guys who worked on these fix-ups, and have commented on them decades ago, but until I dig out all the notes on that and re-examine the two versions, I am left with a certain amount of waffling.) Soooo, excellent job on what must've been a tedious task. I don't know if I'd ever have the heart to do this myself on this one. Thank you again. (Er one minor criticism on your on-screen text: Does not the use of the phrase "more stronger" sound both redundant and "off"? "Stronger" already has the "more" implicit. How about "more intense" or "even stronger" instead? . Sorry for the picky picky of that. I've noted that the interjection of the often unneeded word "more" has been on the rise the last few years. What's with that? Ok, I'll just shut up about it. )

Rodan is one of my favorite movies. I love the fact that it starts out as sort of a Horror film about Giant Insects like Them, and then it turns into a Giant Monste Movie like Godzilla. And the scene at the end when the two Rodans are destroyed is quite poignant and sad. I like this movie in any Version, American or Japanese.

ALL of the changes are changes that would've been made due to money and time limitations. I always suspected as much but I needed to see a side by side to be sure. But, yep, all of the musical changes are likely the result of the tracks not having been properly separated, and the lack of voice actors contributed to the need for narration and cut character parts. All of the sound effect replacements are actually with stock sounds (the guy screaming in the mind is as famous as the wilhelm scream, ditto for that particular phone ring). I bet the american company only had a team of 2-3 editors not including renting the sound studio to do recordings with the voice actors. I would imagine it was a few hundred in their budget for localization and re-editing.

I prefer several sound design choices and edits with Rodan's big attack scene in the US version. The guns have more bang, the sfx are loud and in your face, the editing is much quicker adding to its intensity, and introducing the 2nd Rodan earlier adds two elements: 1 - it establishes Rodan has a mater earlier, which adds emotional weight to the 2nd Rodan coming to its mates aid, and also adds more foreshadow to the final scene. 2- it adds a whole other air battle. We have 2 fights not one and both happening simultaneously. One thing after the other. I agree, the Japanese version is overall the superior version. I love the eerie silence throughout. But the attack sequence in the US Cut is just far superior. The decisions to take Ifukube's music away and just have the sound of screams, wind, and said sfx even almost muting Rodan's mighty roar in several parts, adds to the chaos. It's intense. I love it. Also, the roar they use in the opening credits of the US cut us horrifying, and I think fits the tone better than the one in the Japanese cut.

Very interesting, and I wish I'd discovered your channel before. However, while you point out the many cuts, and you do note in several places the stock footage used, I didn't see any mention of the SFX footage MISSING from the Japanese version. There has been conjecture for years as to how exactly the King Brothers were able to include footage, obviously shot by Tsuburaya's team, that was not included in the Japanese release. The most popular theory is that they were given a work print of the Japanese version. There are in fact 18 SFX shots in total unique to the US version. While a few other movies do contain unique footage, this little mystery has never been fully resolved. And, as you point out, the footage from the Japanese version is rearranged, and sometimes flipped, it is also zoomed and just generally really played around with. It makes for sorting out all the differences between the Japanese and IS versions very difficult, so good job on making a easy to follow video out of all that.

I’ve watched this movie so much, that when I first watched the original version, it was fairly easy to notice the “new” scenes. The original adds so much more footage. ✌🏻 In one of the shot where the planes are chasing Rodan, you can clearly see the vertical corner of a wall. Looks like the shot went on for a little too long! In the scene where Shigeru climbs into the cave to help remove rocks on Goro’s body, why oh why didn’t he just jump back through the hole in front of him, instead of moving deeper into the cave where the Meganulon was? Lol Even as a kid this used to bug me to no end….and it still does and I’m 53! Lastly, big thanks for all your hard work putting this vid. together. I know it had to be a pain! 👏👏

I do agree with you on the dub's cuts, however I don't really think it's right to re-edit someone else's work after it's been edited already, especially that from another country. A lot of the features seem to be side effects of American sci-fi flicks of the 50s; over-explaining narration so the audience doesn't have to think for themselves, gratuitous stock footage of the hydrogen bomb, all that stuff. Supposedly it was a major hit and made a substantial amount of money, although I don't have any sources to back that up with. Certainly did better than Gigantis, the Fire Monster did, that's for sure. :)

I do agree with this, yet Pacing Issues can hurt a film too, so reducing the length of lingering scenes, running scenes can do a good an effective job, not to mention that some of te added stuff Was very effective. I just think the US version has a very lop-sided look at the female cast! Perhaps even sexist views if you think about the time-period in which these films were made. The US editing Disparaging mothers, upset or crying wives is pretty messed up when you think about it, since (American) men seem to be afraid of PMSing Women. At the same time, I don't advocate for Constant talking during intense scenes. I noticed Way Too Much of That during early days when Fox Kids aired Digimon in the early 2000s. The same applies here, either random banter, jokes, or Long Drawn Explanations that seriously shouldn't have been added in the first place!

My copy of RODAN has BOTH versions, which is what I prefer because, other than the original GOJIRA, I don't have the patience to read subtitles during a Kaiju movie, ESPECIALLY if the subtitles aren't letterboxed because they can be obscured by backgrounds! Of these two, I prefer the Dubbed version! Not only is it fast paced it makes it clear up front that the creatures are MALE AND FEMALE which is left vague in the original, leading you to think they were brothers, which I thought before I was old enough to appreciate the "talking stuff"! And on this note, Shigeru's closing narration capped the movie with a poetic "eulogy" for the Rodans describing how they refused to live without each other! Shigeru meditates Zen like on if he would die as well as they, assuminng, if something were to take the life of his own sweetheart! I often tear up during this ending whereas in the original, it just sorta happens, and now it's time for a snack before the next Kaiju! Wait until you do War Of The Gargantuas and SEE the MAJOR change the Dubbed version made, which saved the film, IMO

Two things you didn't mention. 1--George Takei did some of the English dubbing. 2--When Rodan is about to attack the city, in the U.S. version we hear a loud air raid horn going off which isn't in the Japanese version. I like both versions but I guess I'd have to go with the Japanese version since it has much more of Ifukube's great music in several key moments. Plus it also has that great shot of Rodan's shadow gliding over the couple at the volcano.

Maybe it's because I grew up watching the American version, but I actually like it more than the original. Which weird because I always prefer the original versions. But the American Rodan feels scarier, it feels more like a horror movie than a kaiju movie (at least for the first half of the film) What's also weird is that the American version has a bigger emphasis on the terror of nuclear weapons. You'd think the original would shine a light on it more but it doesn't. It's like it received the opposite treatment of what America did with Gojira 1954.

Rodan is my favorite Kaiju monster. Sorry, Godzilla fans. As for which version of *Rodan* I prefer, I have to go with the American dub. The footage of the atomic weapons being tested seemed to set up this movie. "On target. The kill is complete. *But, what have these tests done to Mother Earth? Can the human race continue to deliver these staggering blows without arousing somewhere in the depths of Earth a reaction...a counter-attack...a horror still undreamed of. There are persons in the Japanese islands who believe that the horror has already been seen. What is the aftermath? This is the story of such an aftermath."*

@King Kong Fan I recall reading it somewhere, but I'm also sure I remember it from a documentary video piece... possibly from one of the DVDs... where the narrator mentions that American critics thought that Ishiro Honda and Inoshiro Honda were two different people... the one a collaborator with Kurosawa, the other a director of schlock sci-fi. Not realizing, the narrator added, that they were the same person... one a formal version of his name, the other informal. I think it might have even been Ed Godzieweski who was this narrator.

RODAN in its American dub was the very first Kaiju Eiga I saw as a kid, must have been six or seven when I first saw it, and it was nearly two decades before I finally saw the Japanese version when it was released on DVD in North America by Classic Media, so I was pretty excited to see that version at last... but in this case it's pretty conflicting. Technically the original Japanese version as usual is superior and has no narration (and as a lover of Japanese cinema I always usually prefer the original Japanese versions of each film without the hokey dubbing) but the American version is for the most part admittedly way more faster paced, better edited, has some better sound FX and music (forgive me Akira Ifukube!!!) as well as better use of each or both in several scenes which were silent (especially those that did need music for more involving dramatic effect), and is not as padded out. Also, they had more footage of military vehicles opening volley fire in the volcano bombing scenes in the American dub. However, the ending in the Japanese version is more poetic and moving without the narration.

Between that and the constant cuts in scene length and complete scenes cut altogether, it's pretty annoying that the dub skips through the film and makes it noisier. As the English dub is the only version I've seen it makes me want to see the original cut of the original Rodan.

Dialogue is when people speak. For exsample, "how was your day" is dialogue.

After watching Godzilla vs. Kong it was apparent that Rodan got shortchanged. In K.O.T.M. Rodan bows to K.G. And Godzilla in the end. In Toho movies Rodan bows to no-one! They need to bring back the tough and funny Rodan!!!

Inoshiro is his name. Ishiro is his shortened named ie Andrew to Andy or Drew. Not to be picky, but it isn't wrong. Paul Frees is heard in the dub. Popular voice actor. Key Luke narrated. Think Gremlins.

There is no proof that Inoshiro is his Name. The U.S. Edits just can't get his name right.

really hate the dub for this movie, narration is entirely uneeded and the accent is a bit over the top imo. also really hate that it's so god damn hard to get a copy of either version that doesn't cost a fortune.
