RODECaster Pro
B&H: bhpho.to/2MI0qZS
In this episode, we take an in-depth look at the new RODECaster Pro recorder, mixer, and audio interface designed specifically for podcasting and recording panel discussions. I have to confess that I was originally not that enthused about the RODECaster Pro, but now that I’ve use it a for a couple of weeks, WOW! I’m surprised by the quality of sound that it produces and find the effects more effective than I expected. It is much easier to use than most mixers for those that aren’t audio engineers making this a great choice for those less interested in spending lots of time learning how to get better sound for their podcasts. And even for audio nerds like me...well, I'm buying this which was originally just on loan for the review!
If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses at school.learnlightandsound.com including processing dialogue audio, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F8 and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders.

I got one as I need to start doing interviews for the podcast via phone, and it was a good solution, but I couldn't get multitrack setup via USB working. I really, really wish it would do multitrack on the card. I ended up with a stereo mix and while I got all the other levels right I screwed up my own and I'm not sure how easily I can fix this.
@kyleolson8977
@kyleolson8977 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, looks like Audition is going to do a good to fix it well enough. There's always this fear when you've recorded something important and you think you might not be able to use it. I can't imagine what life was like for sound people before computers.

Fantastic. You really get through all the stuff that podcasters actually should know about the device. And finally the answer to recording on SD while simultaneously being an interface to your DAW. That's more great news! I'm having a hard time recommending anything else these days. I think this device is going to dominate podcasting gear for quite awhile. They did a great job.

@@curtisjudd I'd have to say at the same price point this pretty much destroys the L12 unless you need more than the 4 XLR pres. The L12 was made for music but can work well in more complex podcast setups but with the Rodecaster's focus on podcasting, they did all the things right. I'd love to chat about it more but what I really need is to get my hands on one so I can speak from firsthand use but this is another device like the AT2100/2005 and MixPre where I can recommend it based solely on the reviews and results I've already seen. Your video adds to that recommendation.

This caught my eye whilst doing a search for inexpensive mixing desks. Always been on the lookout for a cheap / well built solution that would allow users to setup a home radio / live broadcast studio. Think Rode have missed a trick with a couple of additions I'd love to see in future models. - Using the Neutrik connection and allowing line level input as well as just microphone. - Including fader start switch / fader on/off switch at the bottom of each channel These simple solutions accompanied with a mini app (CD player interface) that launched multiple audio files would open it up more to the live broadcast market rather than just podcasters.

I'm using the F8 for my podcast right now and although it works great for the last year, it's just a mess of cables coming out of all 3 sides of the zoom, I can't see how long we've been going or levels unless I tilt the whole device up, and I've been trying to find a Skype solution for the longest time now. The fact that this device lets you connect Skype callers and use the microphones to send the audio to them is really wonderful! The Stereo thing is a bit strange that it wasn't included, but good on Rode for adding it in. Great review!

Agreed. Some people insist that using a traditional recorder or mixer can do everything the RODECaster does, and while that is technically true if you add all the right additional gear, it doesn't necessarily make the process convenient or easy. I've got a whole table full of recorders and mixers but when it comes to recording a podcast, I'll be using the RODECaster for the foreseeable future.

Hi @@curtisjudd and EpoxVox. Greating from Denmark. I bigs thanks to both of your channels, they have helped me a lot. I'm podcasting within medical education #meded and would love to hear what your thoughts is now here 5-6 month later, after the software update 1.2.2 First what do you think about the device now after they added the multichannel mode to SD-card and the new setup for the menu? Second a question on the pre-amps. Do you think they are powerfull enough to work with a Procaster from Rode or maybe a Shure SM7b, both dynamic microphones that a lot of people think need somekind of Fet Head or cloud lifter? In my test in my home studio I don't think there is a lot to gain from a fet head here, I didn't think the his was that much stronger with out the fet head. Compared with my portable Zoom H6 where the fet head makes a huge difference. Im excited to hear what you guys think. Again thanks for two great channels, they have helped my a lot and learned my so much starting up a podcast. Morten

@@mortenlindkvist3390 Hi Morten, I think that RODE has done a great job evolving the RODECaster so that it is a useful tool both for engineers and for people who are not engineers. In my mind, the updates have now made this a good tool for engineers who are working with podcasts. As for the SM-7B and RODECaster, I don't see a need for a fethead or cloudlifter. The RODECaster preamps seem plenty capable to gain up dynamic microphones without a problem. Best wishes!

Great review. Wish list for upgrades to the RODE: 1) basic equalization that you find in every other mixer. If this can be done in firmware that would be fantastic. 2) Smaller form to make it more portable. As it is, it is too large to be portable for me, requiring its own separate carrying case/bag. 3) In the future, add combo XLR/TRS inputs. Though a little more complicated, the Yamaha AG06 Mixer-USB Audio Interface is a much less expensive competitor particularly when you do not need 4 microphones.

Thanks for making this video Curtis. It looks like Rode really knows what the amateurs like myself need. It looks like a very cool piece of gear. I am going to order one with a couple Shure SM7B mics. I think that will be a good mix. I was thinking of the Road NTG-3 but may not be the right choice. Not sure. Maybe too big? Regardless, thanks for your time. Cheers!

I LOVE this review it's my favorite of all the Rodecaster Pro reviews I've seen, most thorough along with Podcastage but his was down before the update. Anyway, I've watched this several times and listening back the ONE concern I really have about this RCP is that it seems like your voice goes in and out noticeably with that noise gate--unless it's just me ?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. I don’t use the noise gate anymore, too extreme and obvious.
@talkingbuffalo

@@curtisjudd Not just saying it, I really mean it. This is the best, most thorough review of the RCP I've seen. I"m scared off by it because of the noisegate. I record mostly in a very quiet environment so you wouldn't think using it matters to me, but I have COPD and subsequent heavy breathing issues. .The Noise Gate (with adjusted settings) on the DBX I use eliminates that from hurting my audio tracks. I fear not using a gate with RCP will make me very beathy, while using it could sound pumpy like you experienced.

Hi Grant, I have an assistant monitoring in most cases. When she isn't available, I get things set up ahead of time and record without monitoring. Sometimes that doesn't work and a reshoot is necessary.

Another useful review. Thanks Curtis! The AT2005 seems to be noisy when the gate is open. I do hear less noise with the other mics. For most dynamic mics the 55 dB of gain might not be enough. Adding a cloudlifter should give better results. For its price and features the Rødecaster Pro is very hard to beat!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 жыл бұрын
Hard to beat, indeed! I didn't find the cloudlifter/fethead to be necessary, even with the RE20, RE50L or the AT2005. To clarify, when you say the AT2005 is noisy when the gate is open, you mean you hear reverberation, not self noise in the audio chain, correct?

Would you recommend this or the mix pre 3 for v/o / working with the sure sm7b
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't tested this with the SM7B yet but I think it depends on whether you'll ever need a field recorder for film/video work. If so, the MixPre. If you're only doing spoken word and VO work, I'm betting the RODECaster may be a better choice (pending tests with the SM-7B of course).

Hey Curtis, great channel, bud. I enjoy your thorough reviews. This piece of tech in particular was very interesting. I had a few questions about it at the end and was hoping you might know the answers. If not then perhaps one of your other subscribers might. Either way any insight is greatly appreciated. I recently switched to the 2017 iPad pro 10.5" for my video capture and editing. Mostly I cover regulatory meetings and conferences for unarmed combative sports. My first question has to do with whether or not this mixer would be recognized as an audio source on the iPad pro through the lightning port? I use Switcher Studio and Lumafusion, but I wouldn't expect you to know if they would also recognize the device. If you or anyone else have experience working with the mixer and those apps that would be a bonus. Second question has to do with mix-minus. You mentioned that the mix-minus functions with a caller's audio, but is it also a function of the 4 mic channels monitor outputs? Thanks in advance for your help. Keep up the great work.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, Thanks! I don't have an iPad Pro to test with here, but I can try with a standard iPad. I'll give that a go tonight when I'm back at the studio. No idea on the apps, but perhaps somebody else knows. As for mix minus, this works only with the 3.5mm input, the bluetooth connection, and now, via USB. The monitor outputs will output ALL audio so it doesn't work there. I hope that helps!

Curtis, As usual, an incredibly professional review. Also timely for me. But having viewed some of your post-processing videos, I found myself wondering how much audio processing you did on this? How close to the raw recorded file you started with is what I heard as I listened to your video review?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ted, as noted, no post processing on the audio for this session except for loudness normalization to -23 LUFS. I wanted everyone to hear what it sounds like without compression, EQ, noise reduction, etc.

Great review as always Curtis. I’ve always wondered - if you’re connecting your preamp to the PC via a USB cable, would that undo the good quality from using xlr cables with the mics? I’ve just always been wary of usb for audio.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mica Papa, No, not necessarily, just depends on the device. The important thing is the device's preamp and analogue to digital converter. In the case of the RODECaster Pro, they're both very good. And after the converter, the USB cable just carries the digital signal to the computer with no impact on audio quality.

I looked up the preamp specs and saw (as you alluded to) that it has 55dB preamp gain. Like others here, I wonder how it would perform with mics like the SM-7b (or possibly even the RE-20), which traditionally run a little hotter. Or put another way, what's the noise floor at, say, 50dB or even when maxxed out? One (or someday both) of those mics are on my wish list. I love the layout (and the buttons) on this fairly compact device. Though (as you effectively demonstrated), a tasteful way to label the buttons might be a welcome addition (for those who may wish to change the sounds frequently) considering that this is a flashier device and some may feel that label tape could conflict with the otherwise clean aesthetic. Wow, we live in a golden age when substantial new features can be added via firmware update. I can think of a lot of reasons for many to want this device. Thanks!

It did really well with the RE20 at 41/55 on the demo sequence here in terms of gain (though the RE20 is not a good match for my wife's voice). I don't have an SM7b on hand to test just yet, hopefully some day soon. Good time to be a creator, for sure!

great test! covering all the questions a poscaster has. One more though. how would you incorporate the rode nt usb mic into such a setup?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hans-Jochen, thanks. Good question re: the NT USB. The RODECaster does not have a way to take the audio directly from the NT USB but if you were recording to computer and your computer's DAW or audio recording app can take audio from multiple input sources simultaneously, then you could connect both the NT USB and RODECaster to the computer to record from both simultaneously. Not the cleanest setup, but potentially an option. Best wishes!

Hi Jassie, I believe that when the multitrack firmware is delivered that it should also work multitrack via USB as well but will confirm. If so, it should work on Mac without additional drivers. On PC, they'll likely need to deliver an ASIO driver.
