Nice video Rodian. I think if you had built piers either end the wall would probably be strong enough provided the diamond patterns were no bigger than you have done and the strength for the top course...if you had tramline bed reinforcement in the bed above (between the 2 courses above the pattern) that should be enough to hold it. We did something very similar in our third year at college. I need to get back here rather than instagram...

Cheers Rob. I was originally going to build the whole thing in 9 inch but didn't have enough bricks. Piers would have strengthened it up nicely...also, in hindsight I could have put a few wall ties in to connect the diamonds to the main wall.I was hunting around my garden for something to reinforce the brick above...wall ties was the best i could find. Deffo come back to YT, such a good platform. If you do come back and are interested in collaborating sometime after lockdown, hit me up on Instagram. I think we could build something epic! 🧱🤙

Best for you would be to get the proform 11inch philly rubber 1 as you use that style in marshaltown. Then would get a better idea if you like. Wooden you get with half leather also. Like the limber blade nice and light in the hand but they brick choppers cutting bricks with the trowel would be better staying with the standard blade guessing.

Hi Rodian, Glad to see you're finally using what l call a decent "W Rose" trowel at last, although shame it's not the leather bounded handled version. l switched from using Marshalltown to "W Rose" back in 1987 when l went to live and work in Toronto, Canada. I know it took a bit of getting used to but soon preferred using it instead of the Marshalltown's l grew up on. The guys l worked with at Challenger Masonry all put the "Rubber Ferrules" on the handles which l feel helped a lot when working with both Bricks & Blocks eliminating that 'Horrible Twangy' sound. Loving the Videos.

The panel looks great . I’m wondering is that a wide heel pattern w.rose as opposed to a Philadelphia pattered w.rose. Check the manufactures part number it should be stamped into the handle. For a wide heel one with a wood handle it will be RO221- followed by the blade length. The thing about the rose standard shank trowels is they are anything but standard and it looks like you got one with the high handle angle very uncomfortable to use . A good rule of thumb to follow as regards your trowel handle being correct ( apart from it feeling right in your hand ) is turn the trowel over on a flat surface when the blade tip contacts the surface the trowel handle should lie flat . If there’s a noticeable gap under the handle up near the blade the trowel handle angle is to high if there’s a gap under the end of the handle the handle angle is to low.

That wooden handle on your new trowel? ....... after you've used it a while it will 'Sweat-up' and will actually 'form' to the shape of your hand and become 'really' comfortable. Those rubber handles are OK from the get-go but they don't 'reform' because they're not a 'natural' material like wood........... I'm a plasterer not a brickie, but the principle is the same. I had a chap worked for me who, whenever he bought himself a new Trowel he'd ask to swap handles so that I could break the new one in for him - (he was a Labourer/Spread so couldn't get it sweated up and reformed inside a year :-) Just a thought .... hope you stick it out though :-)

A wooden handle is The Best. I hate all those gimmick handles of 'duraplastic' etc. that claim they absorb shock and massage the hand while you work and reduce stress blah blah blah. Complete Bullshit. ... I hear you now, complaining about it being slippery; that's probably because of the lacquer finish on it, which will wear away with continued use. Just like new boots you got to wear it in. Where the wood handle really shines is in the hot weather because it doesn't loose it's grip like those other handles when it gets wet with sweat.. It will also eventually mold to your hand. .. and I would take that redundant rubber bumper off it.
