During 9/11 Roger Clemens visited my father's firehouse engine 22 ladder 13 in NY. My father cooked for him and he broke bread with everyone in the firehouse. He wore my father's FDNY jacket coming in to pitch for the playoffs. a memory that will last forever. Thanks Rocket.

Roger is 100% right about dad's and youth sports. My 9 year old is an immensely talented basketball player and has averaged 17+ a game this season. Yesterday, he was just off and not trying hard, and I could tell it. I didn't yell and scream at him on the court. During a timeout, he came to me to get his water that I had refilled for him. I calmly told him to either give it your all or ask the coach to take you out and give someone else a chance who will give 100%. After that, he assisted on or scored the final 20 points (scored 12 in the final 5 min) to come back and win in OT. Knowing my child and what he would have done if I had yelled at him on the court, he would have hung his head and shut down. That said, I have no issue with the coaches getting on him, and neither does my kid. Because it's just different. I honestly don't care if my kid doesn't score a point as long as he is giving his team what they need to make everyone else better and give them the best chance to win. I honestly think my kid enjoys making the pass and watching his teammates score more than he enjoys score, which is rare for a kid that age.

I saw on AFN while I was in the Navy, that Roger visited the troops together with President Bush. Always appreciated that he was willing to make the trip and try to lighten their spirits. Long since forgotten, but not by those of us who understood the times. Dempsey, Ruth, Lindbergh, etc, are known for their exploits in their fields and professions, but during their sidenotes during Wartime gave them a window into their connection with their countrymen.
