This knitting technique is an easy one to learn and creates a 'chain stitch' appearance on the selvedges of your work. It is simply an attractive edge-finishing technique.
I am demonstrating this particular slip stitch edging using stockinette stitch as the main pattern, but you can add this edging onto each side of many patterns including garter stitch and seed stitch.
You just have to add two different stitches to each row;
Row 1 (and subsequent odd-numbered rows): Add a knit stitch at the beginning of the row, and add a stitch at the end of the row which you will slip purlwise with the yarn in back (i.e. with the yarn behind the needles)
Row 2 (and subsequent even-numbered rows): Add a purl stitch at the start of the row, and add a stitch at the end of the row which will be slipped purlwise with the yarn in front (i.e. with the yarn in front of the needles)
(Note: In stockinette stitch, the knit/purl stitches at the start of the rows are already included in the stockinette pattern, so don't need to be added as extras.)
Because you are adding 2 stitches every row, one at either end, you will most likely need to cast on 2 extra stitches compared to how many stitches the pattern tells you to cast on.
For example, if a pattern tells you to cast on 40 stitches...cast on 42 instead.
(This only applies to flat knitting, not circular knitting.)

I've been slipping the edge sts on my shawls for a long time. I like the neat look. But I do have a question.... How can I make an equally neat edge when I change colors? I'd like your thoughts.

Hi! It's a tricky one and basically the options are knitting the slip stitch at the start of the row in the old colour and then changing colour, OR change to the new colour for the last stitch of the previous row...maybe test them both and see what you like best?

Is this edge a good one to use when knitting a sweater and using the mattress stitch technique to sew side seams?
@sucathwa8000
@sucathwa8000 5 жыл бұрын
Yes Caroline it makes it so easy to sew side seams. It eliminatess the need to skip every 4th stitch. It makes it really easy to pick up stitches for mattress stitch and the result is beautiful.

It is a far more attractive edge, and probably stronger too. I would like to ask, though, if it helps prevent the curling under that stockinette does.
@RokoleeDIY
@RokoleeDIY 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! Unfortunately it doesn't prevent the curling, no, it's a bit too thin of an edge for that. A wider edging technique or border is required to stop the curling. Thanks for watching :)

Can you please tell me if I can use this method with ribbing stitch ? I’ve only recently started knitting. So far I’ve managed to complete 7 premature baby hats that I donate to charities. The pattern is all 2 x rib. No matter how careful I am, the edges just aren’t as neat as I want them to be. Many thanks 💐 😁 👍🏼

That's a nice job you're doing :) You can add these selvedges to the vertical edges of any stitch including ribbing.

Would doing a selvedge stitch on a garter stitch be the same, but slipping knit wise instead of purl wise at the end of each row? Thank you!
@RokoleeDIY
@RokoleeDIY Жыл бұрын
Hi! The pattern would be exactly the same on garter stitch, no need to change anything since it is an addition to the pattern - slipping knitwise would actually twist the stitch which we don't want :)

TL;DR slip the last stitch purlwise, keeping the wool at the back. But thanks for an excellent video :D
