#RD88 #Roland #DigitalPiano
Welcome, and thanks for being here for another comparison video at the Merriam Pianos KZfaq channel. In this video, we’re going to be discussing the brand new Roland RD88 stage piano.
You can think of the RD88 as an FP30 crossed with an RD2000. This is our first chance to try the instrument, so we’re very excited to dive in.
If this is the first time to the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support.
Piano Sound:
The RD88 is different from most other stage pianos right off the hop due to the inclusion of on-board speakers. With two 6 watt speakers, you’ve got adequate power for solo playing. The RD88 combines different worlds here when it comes to the 3 distinct sound engines, starting with the ZEN-Core synthesis engine responsible for all of the on-board synth patches, with a whopping 3,000 patches pre-loaded.
The piano tone and E piano tone are brought to you by Roland’s tried and true SuperNATURAL engine. The highly regarded SuperNATURAL engine can be found in many of Roland’s digital pianos, so it’s presence here is very welcome.
The interface itself is easy to operate overall, and would be at home in both a studio setting for live DAW work, as well as on the stage with easy to access EQ adjust, compressor and transpose functions, as well as system wide control over reverb, chorus, delay and tone colour. Overall, you’re getting pretty close to RD2000 level functionality, but for about half the price (and substantially lower weight for easier portability.)
Piano Action:
Roland has equipped the RD88 with their PHA4 action, which is an action found on essentially all of Roland’s 88 note digital pianos under the $2,000 USD price point. Interestingly, there’s a good number of musicians out there who actually prefer the PHA4 action over the more advanced PHA50 action sound in more expensive models.
The PHA4 is well known for its reliability. It’s got a realistic ivory texture on the white keys, as well as a matte finish on the black keys. It also utilizes a triple sensor for accurate MIDI output, and features escapement. Overall, it strikes a nice balance for folks used to playing classical, and folks used to playing more contemporary styles. Really, this is an action that you can’t go wrong with, plain and simple.
Piano Features:
There are several really convenient things about this instrument. For one, there are two inputs; a ¼” microphone input, as well as a ⅛” stereo input. There are two modulation wheels, which can certainly come in handy. There are four assignable knobs for various parameters.
The RD88 is also equipped with quite a few on-board rhythms, as well as a trusty metronome. The speakers can be turned on and off, and if you’re in a really crazy playing situation, there’s also a “Panel-Lock” feature to make sure you don’t inadvertently hit a button by accident in the middle of a performance (which has happened to me by the way, not fun!)
There’s a wide range of pedal accommodations here too. The DP2 comes standard with the instrument, which serves as a basic foot switch. If you’re going to be using the instrument as a piano a lot of the time, we’d recommend upgrading to the DP10 pedal, which is capable of half-pedaling.
Conclusions:
Thanks so much for checking out our review of the RD88. This is an excellent product for a great price, and definitely makes a strong case for being the top stage piano in its class.

Thanks for a great review Stu. I’ve obtained one of these this week and am very impressed so far. The main piano sound is particularly lovely. I like the fact that they’ve labelled all the rear inputs on the top so you can see what you’re plugging into from the front. I only discovered this after I’d spent some time fumbling around at the back in the shadows using a phone torch. I think that’s my review viewing/selection process over in general but I’ll have to keep coming back to your channel for the fantastic playing and amusing comments. Keep up the good work!

When I was in school, we had a Yamaha Clavinova or similar for concerts, one girl played a nice classical piece, but had her pinky stuck out for one passage. There was a 50 % chance of her hitting the choir or dog barking buttons when playing.

I was giving up on finding some new keys after watching endless comparison videos and trying them out in shops. With exception to the CP88 I've been underwhelmed by most keybeds and sounds, especially the feel of the Nords. Just stumbled across the RD88 by chance and couldn't stop playing it loved the warmth and simplicity. Along with this video its been a heartwarming and inspiring experience. Tomorrow I'm gonna buy it and upgrade from a Kontakt S61, which has served me well but its time to make the next step.Thanks for your brilliant review and for sharing your genuine enthusiasm for the instrument. It's got a great deal more to offer than I realised, so it's a no brainer. By the way your playing skills are sublime!

Hello Stu, always wonderful to listen to your piano reviews...although I think the way you play the piano you can make a 10-key toy keyboard with rainbow coloured keys sound great and appealing!! For the rest of us, mere mortals...and non-professional pianists (although I am a professional classical musician), it is a quite a daunting task to decide what piano to buy...even within similar price-range E.Pianos. For example could you compare RD88 with FP 60? Are the Supernatural sounds (piano and E.piano) the same with RD88/FP30/FP60 ? Is FP 60 worth the extra $900 over the FP 30? And Finally, would you also pack a FP60 in your car trunk to go gigging? .Sorry....A lot of questions...from a dazed person shopping for an e.piano...Thanks.

Wow, wow, and again, one more time wow, OK so my RD 88 was just delivered and I packed up the FP 30 to return. Wow, what a difference between the two I see what you mean by the silky smooth playing of this RD 88. I’m a beginner total beginner. I really did not expect to have the sensitivity to hear or feel the difference between the FP 30 the 88, that’s why I’m so amazed. It truly is a difference as you know. So thanks again I would not have made this decision so easily except for your informative videos. There was no other video online that would’ve had that much influence on me or that I felt that confident about.

Do you notice a huge difference with the piano sounds? I have an fp 30 and I'm really considering upgrading to the rd 88.
@thejackdiamondart
@thejackdiamondart 3 жыл бұрын
@@JTMusic880 Yeah I noticed a big difference I was so surprised. You know as a beginner I didn’t expect that I would hear much of a difference or feel much of a difference in the way it plays. I thought it might be just something subtle. Oh I Would say if you can afford to upgrade it’s definitely worth it if you’re going to be playing on the instrument a lot. Just the feel of it it’s silky smooth and the feel of the keys because of the way the sound is just so softly elevated as you press down on the keys it’s a whole new experience. So to answer your question yes the piano sounds are fuller and richer just surprisingly better.

For me, the action is of utmost importance. And when it it comes to the action, the first consideration is key repetition. There is one piece of music that should be used by every digital piano reviewer to demonstrate the repetition capability of a piano’s action. That piece is Scarlatti’s sonata in d minor k141 played up to speed.

Nice review! Didn't quite get if you prefer the rd88 sound over the fp60 or not. I'm considering both, and the fp60 lacks the pitch bend and mod wheels. I'd be very happy if you could review the casio px 560, which seems like a good choice either, but the are no objective reviews of it online. Thanks!
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 4 жыл бұрын
So context is important for preference. If I was playing JUST a piano gig, I'd take the FP60. I slightly prefer the PHA-4 action, and both have the same Supernatural Sound Engine...and the FP60 onboard speakers are good enough that I save myself the amp-lugging. For a band gig, home production, writing, or kind of anything else, RD88. Hope that's not too ambiguous an answer! Good suggestion on the PX560, I've just added that to the list of pianos to compare! And you just gave me the excellent idea to compare the RD88 with the FP60. Great ideas all around.-stu

I'm really tempted to buy one of these, but absoultely do NOT want to screw around with lugging around an orchestral-type of music stand. I had an RD-800 and it was the same oversight... finally got tired of the music rack issue and bought a CP-4. But it 's still too heavy. I really like that the RD88 comes in under 30 pounds. Thanks for your thoughts and again, great review/demo.

There's ALWAYS a way to make something work :). What I'd suggest maybe is heading on into a Home Depot after you order a spare stand from Roland or Yamaha for something like an MP7se or FP60/FP90? I like the Kawai's because they're all steel and will take a major beating. Get a spare one, go on into a hardware store where you could find some piping or some kind of receptacle that would fit snuggly around the base of the stand, and then maybe consider a super-glue of just those recepticles to the back of the RD88?? It might be a little MacGyver'd, but way easier than a big orchestra stand!

That is certainly fair! That is why it is always a good idea to demo the pianos in person when possible. More expensive does not always lead to a more preferable piano experience. Roland has some very nice keyboards with a great action. I just wish that the support arm of the company had a great action. I bought a Roland RD 88 keyboard and 2 months later it died. I took it to a Roland repair center where it has been for over a month waiting for a part that is coming from Japan. When someone spends this much for a keyboard one would expect the company to keep adequate parts on hand to repair their product.

I appreciate everyone's replies and comments, I road tested this instrument today in a retail store, I'm quite impressed overall except for the bass, I play alot of classical music with low bass notes, C1 to C2 octaves etc.. I could hear it was lacking, what is a suitable entry level pair of speakers to improve the bass and and increase the overall loudness, feed back appreciated without spending too much extra money.

Another great one, Stu - thanks! Q: will the RD88 accept MIDI in (through USB?)? It would be great to let something you’ve hit upon in your DAW sound through the high-quality sound of this instrument! It’s not clear to me whether MIDI through USB does that - tried that out with my Macbook Pro hooked up to my Roland U-20 with a wired 5-pin DIN to USB interface, but could only manage to use the keyboard as a controller. In the previous century I could play the U-20 from an Atari running CuBase. Maybe I haven’t got some settings right …

Hi Peter! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for tuning in! We appreciate it! While I have not personally experimented with inputting MIDI information into the RD88 via its USB-MIDI interface, according to discussions on a Roland forum, users have found this to be possible. I was initially under the impression that the RD88 only had MIDI out capabilities. Perhaps, one of our community members that uses the RD88 can verify. :)

I've had my RD88 for 2 years and I'm very happy with it. It's user interface is typically Roland, being a tad archaic and the lack of a dedicated rotary wheel is a PITA. I'm however very happy with the overall sound and keyboard action that IMHO isn't too heavy or too light and is even acceptable for playing organ sounds. I love the pitch and modulation wheels as well as the 8 real time controller knobs but it seems to be a chore when it comes to adding new Zencore sounds. Overall, I'm more than happy with the RD88 and its compact size and lightweight design, added to the fact that it snuggly fits into my Casio soft bag is a huge bonus.

I bought the RD88, the action it's NOT the same as FP30x, it's way less similar to a piano the RD88 action than the FP30x. So take care when it says PHA-4 because it's not the same. Despite that, the piano tone is amazing.

@@daniel_lazar Don't worry asking... I kind of like it, but if you are seeking for a piano like experience, I'd say the FP30x is way better. The action on the RD88 it's not even graded and less textured, feels like a midi keyboard action. But the piano tone is very sensitive an lush, really like it... I found two downsides on the RD88(at least at my unit), the first one is the transition between sounds is so uneven, for example from clavinet to e.piano the difference in volume is massive, so it's a downside for live using... The other downside that I founded is that the e piano tones(that are awesome on this piano!) have a amount of keys(close to an octave) on the low mid keys that do not sound... So is a real downside. I hope Roland could develop a driver to fix that problems, would be really nice... Have a nice day!

Thanks for your detailed and professional reviews, they are all extremely helpful. I bought my Roland Rd-88 three weeks ago, I am really enjoying it, the sound quality using headphone is amazing, however when I connect it to the pair of monitor speakers I have (CR5X), I get really a very poor sound quality specially for treble and high notes ( I use a set of high quality TRS cables). Do you have any recommendations how to fix this? Any suggestion for an affordable monitor speakers I can use to get a high quality sound? This is really bothering me and I really can't play for anyone else due to this poor sound quality. PS. The built in speakers in RD-88 are only good for personal practise, they are not designed for performance ( even in small venues) at all.
@Gilotopia
@Gilotopia 4 жыл бұрын
I have tried the fp-30, 60 and 90 in the store and they had the exact same problem. They have great sound though the on-board speakers but it's like line out doesn't have some processing step. You could try running the headphones out through a mixer in the mic input rather than the instrument input.
@alicaramba7680
@alicaramba7680 4 жыл бұрын
It's likely because you are listening RD88 through headphones very loudly, so once you switch to speakers your ears needs to get accustomed to sound at much lower level. I suggest to play RD88 by using only monitor speakers for a few days and not to use headphones at all, maybe you will find it sounds better. Next, connect headphones to line out (L/mono) jack of RD88, pan current patch to the left and compare sound between L/mono out and phones out through headphones, of course, at approximate levels (output of phones out socket is amplified, so you will need to put volume down). Check this with a few different patches. If there is a big discrepancy in sound or you hear additional noise/sound artifacts that means your RD88 is faulty, or at least some part is faulty, and you should send it back to be refurbished and point out a problem. Of course, it could be your speakers are trash. They has their own phones out so compare sound of it to the direct sound from RD88's phones out.
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 4 жыл бұрын
Although there's no official word from Roland on this, I too have noticed that some of the headphone enhancements are missing from the line-outs. This probably isn't an error by Roland, my guess is that it's done on purpose so it's easier to mix with i.e. a flatter / neutral response. So two suggestions already made here: one, take the headphone mix as a line-out (prob the easiest), or if you were looking for an extremely great inexpensive set of monitors, the iLoud Micro Monitors from IK Multimedia are just sensational for the price. Less than the CR5's and they've been compared to the Genelec 8010's.

@metalplatedfacejob
@metalplatedfacejob 4 жыл бұрын
might I suggest that you not connect the output of the keyboard directly to the monitors if you are. Monitors generally want a line level signal at +4 dbu.....check the specs on the keyboard output, it's most likely at -10 dbu if its a line level signal at all. This means that its also most likely unbalanced if it is a line level output. You would want to use a regular guitar cable and not a balanced TRS cable. The sound degradation your getting is due to miss matched impedance. try this, hook it up to a mixer with high Z inputs, these are made for instrument connections, then send the mixer output to your monitors. You can get a decent 6 channel mixer for 100 bucks, this should solve your problem. The other work around is to get a stereo DI box that will convert the keyboard output to microphone level and running that to the mic inputs of the mixer and then to your monitors, some prefer the sound that a DI imparts on their instrument over the built in High Z on budget mixers.

Very difficult to figure this out Brian, I've been trying to figure out how to accurately discuss polyphony with the RD88 generally, because of how many scenarios that multi-engine setup presents, and how misleading it could be. For example, I've been able to find certain combinations of sounds where the number of sound components playing simultaneously is probably around 256, but the number of clusters of these components being activated by individual notes (what most people think of as polyphony) seems more like 40-50. -stu

Try both if you can. The keybed on each feels totally different (the PHA4 the RD uses feels much better, I think). But their purposes are different, too. The Juno is a workstation, so if you need the sequencer, vocoder, and limited sampling capability, that's what it's made for. If you don't need all that and just want a solid digital piano that happens to have a workstation's worth of patches, the RD is probably the better bet.

It is Zen-Core, the same main sound engine as their Fantom and Fantom-0 keyboards, MC-707 and MV-1 grooveboxes, and their Juno-X keyboard. RD-88 has far, far better piano samples than any other Zen-Core product, but because it is a Zen-Core product, you can make custom sounds on their other keyboards and grooveboxes or Zenology Pro VST and import those sounds into the RD-88. I own this Roland RD88. The thing I don't like most is its sustain (declay). It is far too short, especially in the concert piano mode. Stepping on the pedal is almost the same as not stepping on it. The sound is good but a bit electronic feel. Keybed is a bit too shallow compared with my real Yamaha U1 piano. (Maybe other brands also have this kind of issues or some other issues, as I did not try. Anyway, this is not a real piano. It is still good as a practice piano. ) The good thing is that it is light weight with speakers. Good for moving around. That's what I brought it for. Hope that Roland will adjust the sustain to a proper scale. (Other RD88 owners also mentioned this problem in other forum.) I can accept the other cons, as other digital pianos also have their cons for this price range.

I also agree about the short decay of the concert grand piano. I am an owner of the RD88 as well. I doubt anything will change about the piano sound. It is supposed to be identical to the RD700NX concert grand piano but I play the RD 700NX at church and I actually feel the decay on the 700 is better than the 88. The RD 88 piano sound is much more editable (except for the decay) than the 700 and of course has thousands of other sounds (and speakers). For the money....this is a great instrument. I actually use mine as a MIDI controller for VSTs and IPad music apps.
