The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41 126300 features a 41mm stainless steel case surrounding a black dial on a stainless steel Oyster bracelet with folding buckle and Rolex Easylink extension. Functions of this Rolex Datejust and its Rolex caliber 3235 automatic movement include 70-hour power reserve, COSC Swiss chronometer certification, 100-meter water resistance, hours, minutes, seconds and date. This Rolex watch also measures 11.7mm in thickness and 47.5mm from lug-to-lug.
The 2019 Cartier Santos Blue Dial WSSA0013 is encased in 39.8mm of stainless steel surrounding a sunburst gradient blue dial on a stainless steel bracelet. Functions of this Cartier Santos Large include Smartlink bracelet, Quickswitch bracelet lugs, Cartier automatic caliber 1847 MC, 100-meter water resistance, an accessory strap, hours, minutes, seconds, and date. This Cartier watch also measures 9.4mm in thickness and 47.5mm from lug-to-lug.

If you could only have one watch and your not really a deep sea diver the Santos can be worn with shorts and a polo shirt, you can swim in your pool with it and you can wear it to the opera or the President’s Ball at your club. It’s the last two where the Santos has the advantage over the Rolex. For the last two events if you have a Rolex you’ll also need to have a more formal watch. In the case of the Santos even if you have a collection, if you’re traveling it can be the one watch to bring irrespective of the event.

Cartier Santos also comes with leather straps and you can easily swap them. It does offer a better value, but Rolex is probably a better investment if you do want to sale it later.

I just bought the blue Cartier and I also got the Datejust 41 2 months ago on Jubilee, but I have to say the Cartier really much more versatile and I just ordered my 1st extra strap from the boutique - fantastic service from them I have to say. And also Cartier now has 8 years warranty when you register your watch with them. Yes you read that correctly, 8 years!

Coming from a Rolex supporter for the past 20 yrs, I will genuinely choose the santos between this 2. Cartier just nailed it on this piece. Elegant, robust, versatile, classy , sporty. It’s just everything you will want in a watch... 👍👍👍

Tim, I vote for the Santos. It is different and distinctive. I am tired of the ubiquitousness of Rolexes. I just sold a Yacht-Master I 16622 and replaced it with a Grand Seiko SBKG005. The watches do not directly transpose as the Y-M had more water resistance and a turning bezel but I am not a water sports person. Rolex is too stodgy and passé in my book.

I own the white dial Cartier and the Wimbledon dial Datejust 41. Both are exceptional watches and complement each other. For those saying that the Santos is a woman’s watch- try the large size. It really wears very well.

I was thinking about getting the Wimbledon datejust as well and also the white dial Cartier but I can't decide whether or not to get the large or medium what do you think? How does a large fit on you?

agreed that in this scenario, the Santos comes out on top. but we're comparing the best looking Santos with the plainest DJ41. the more apt comparison would be the DJ41's Azzurro Blue Roman dial, which pops more than the this Santos. add a fluted bezel, and we're really talking about a tougher call. I own a 42mm Ballon Bleu and a fluted oyster blue stick DJ41, so I'm an enthusiast of both brands. just thought if we're going head to head we'd compare the most similar models. that aside, i catch up on your videos weekly and consider you the single best source for a watch's technical details on the internet. thanks for what you do, all the best!

I've had the white dial version since 2018 and love it more now then ever. It's extremely comfortable. As for bezel scratches, it has picked up a few light scratches but they don't bother me at all.

Of course, Rolex watches also scratch! I'm a major fan of this Santos, and I feel like the price difference relative to Rolex is all to Cartier's credit. This was is priced fairly and impressively for what you get. Best, Tim

@@the1916companywatchreviews If you can get the rolex new ( which I did two weeks ago) then it is the much better value new, and probably the better value than the used Santos because of the resale potential and the 5 year warranty against the remainder of the 2 year warranty of the Cartier. That being said, I'd love to own both, and the Cartier is very affordable used.

@@Calleditaday In the UK the DJ and the Santos are virtually the same price. The warranty on a Cartier watch is 8 years though - 2 years in box and when you fill out a form on Cartier website that takes 30 seconds they bump up to 8 years. I have the DJ41 (rhodium dial) and the Santos and rate the Santos higher in most aspects.

The straps are also not expensive for the Cartier. In UK a custom leather strap directly from Cartier is £220 (incl sales tax) for calf and £330 (incl sales tax) for gator leather.

It's an excellent product. Cartier seemed close to a perfect launch with the 2018 model, but silver dials aren't my thing. The blue-gradient 2K19 model would have been enough to sway me, but the addition of lume completes an awesome sleeper sports watch. Best, Tim

Cartier’s gives you an eight year warranty now, but even without that I would go for the Cartier anytime. Rolex looks very generic.

We got that Rolex for my dad with a blue dial (the dial color was nice!!!) but like for this particular model of Rolex I would prefer Cartier Santos no brainer... I tried my dad's watch the Rolex was chunky, and if u have small wrist, u know the long adjustable clasp of Rolex just protrudes out to the side making it look weird... and like this Rolex model look very generic like every other watch ever... even if I can sell it for a bit higher price its not very pleasing to the eyes and I would not really enjoy my time wearing it... I ve always loved the Santos

Somehow I absolutley fell in love with the Santos. I always wanted to buy a rolex but somehow as I love my G-shock´s square design I am so used to square watches. The santos can be worn in any occasion so it is maybe the perfect watch

I'm an enthusiast of the watch, and I'd love to own one at some point. The 2018 model seemed close to perfect as an all-arounder, but the lack of a dark dial option and lume limited my ardor. 2019 fixed that. Best, Tim

You cant get the blue dial Santos for less that 9k today. Just got mine three weeks ago from the AD. My Daytona has been in a box ever since.

The optional leather strap on the Santos looks great and gives the watch a very different appearance; it's like having two watches for the price of one. But you have to be careful with the leather strap since it can easily slip off its mooring and hit the floor. That happened to me but no damage whatsoever; so the Santos isn't just a pretty face. Now I wear the bracelet which is more solidly attached.

Got my Santos blue coming in the next 10 days. Wanted something different to rolex. Already have the new GMT pepsi and Submariner LV and this will make a nice edition. Plus is different enough to warranty the purchase. Last thing I want is a Rolex the same look as I’ve already got. Can’t wait to get it, it’s reviews like this that pushed me to getting one.

I own the white dial version of the Santos. Great sports watch. Also own a Rolex 39mm Explorer and they get about equal wrist time. If I had to choose one, I’d keep the Santos. It just looks nicer.

I’m thorn between the Cartier Santos medium steel and a Rolex Explorer. Love them both but I have two issues: 1. I think I’ll have to wait a long time for the Rolex 2. Love the santos but I’m always dressed with jeans, sneakers and t shirts and I don’t know if that will work well with the Santos. I need to make up my mind on this.

It could work. Try to look at it like this - with a nice watch you can get away with a more casual look. If the rest of your clothes aren't screaming for attention, with a Santos you can still look like a gentleman on a relaxed day. But if your clothes are full of brand names, big writings and screaming colors you could leave an impression of someone with a fake watch. ;-)

Cartier Santos in every department. It is comfortable to wear too. Rolex DJ is so ill fitting and uncomfortable, unergonomic design. Keeps rotating around your wrist. I couldn’t use it.

Great review, good call. I think the Datejust looks better on a jubilee bracelet and for me that would be my pick of these two but I can see why the Cartier came out on top. It is certainly the more interesting watch. Not much of a waitlist for the Datejust, if any. It's all they have other than OP these days, unless they want to get you the watch you are looking for.

I was between this and a submariner. Ik the submariner would appreciate especially the Hulk. But as my only watch and the watch I plan to wear every day, I prefer the look of the Cartier Santos; I bought it new blue dial $8100 Cad (6150 USD) price including 2 alligator straps (blue and black). It's a classy, well constructed and versatile watch. I'll eventually buy the Hulk more as a weekend watch but I'm happy to have the Santos as my only watch/every day watch.

Tim, given the comprehensiveness of your reviews (which I’m a fan of) I’m surprised you don’t really address a specific point with any of your DJ41 videos; the case size inaccuracy. Whilst we all know it superseded the DJ2, it’s not the same size, and the name it goes by - the 41, is actually not representative of its true size. I own a 126300 and by my own digital callipers, it’s 39.5. This is also very heavily documented within a lot of online references, much like other Rolex models being listed as one size, but are actually something quite different in person i.e Daytona.

I prefer the Santos but with the economics the way they are I'd get the Rolex a list then sell it and get the Santos and then the drive both by Cartier.

Micah PBT i have the same wrist size also and when i tried the large santon at an AD it was really huge on my wrist , i don’t know how tim’s wrist pulls it off. I’d go for the medium , too bad it doesn’t have a date though.

I have to say that the" large" didn't seem all that large, and I'm pretty sensitive to case size. Today's videos also included the Santos Skeleton Noctambule from SIHH 2019, and that's also a "Santos Large" in the same case size, but it's strap-only. On the strap, I could have sworn that this WAS the medium case... not so. Since the Santos blue includes an accessory strap, you might find that it wears best on small wrists when equipped with that strap. Best, Tim

Micah PBT I think that might depend on your preference to having a date complication. The medium might offer slightly better proportion, but if you want a date it’s only available on the large model. As Tim pointed out, it wears small enough to work on your wrist if you do need the date, but if you don’t want or need the date, try the medium. Honestly just try both on if you can, as there is no better way to decide for yourself what works for you.

They have changed the buckle on the leather strap. Previous 0013 reference users report issue with the deployment clasp damaging the leather. I’m about to pull the trigger on the 0030 fingers crossed.

Own a datejust 41 dark rhodium dial and had the medium santos. I do miss it but scratched it on the first day I wore it. For holding value Rolex all the way for more ways of styling the watch Cartier all the way. Don’t buy the cattier from cattier. You’ll loose money the second you walk out. Up to you guys both brilliant watches.

Everybody states the the Cartier bezel is a scratch magnet, what about the datejust fat polished bezel , or any other polished bezel, does it not pick up scratches easily as well?? I really like the look of the cartier more , i’d pick the medium size. Interesting to see the santos against a JLC reverso.

The entire Rolex is polished steel, so the Cartier has no unique vulnerability in this regard. Rolex steel is double-tough where acids or sea water are concerned, but it's no harder than Cartier's 316L alloy. Best, Tim

This Santos model is a genuine alternative to the Rolex and overall I really like it. My only caveat is a styling one...the reprofiled ‘waterfall’ bezel I find less attractive than the previous more squared off one. The blue glass spinel on the crown comes across as a little tacky too. Anyway, out of these two particular watches, I’d go with the Cartier. What would of helped Rolex here, is if they’d gone for the more visually interesting Wimbledon dial variation or a more colorful sunburst, rather than this austere and rather dull black one. The Santos here is more eye catching and dressier after all.

Thought the same on the sapphire. I know it's a feature of them but on this it looks cheap some how; maybe as the watch itself look far more expensive and dare it say classy than before??

Thomas Williams my father had a gold salmon dialed manual wind Tank and that had a rounded synthetic sapphire on the crown...now that looked classy! Maybe if they hadn’t cut the spinel here to look like a piece of costume jewelry and kept it hemispherical like on my dad’s Cartier it wouldn’t of looked so tacky?

I'm on board with the objections to the blue spinel. The polished crown of the Roadster seems to be a viable example of how Cartier might embellish its mainstream sports models without resorting to a fake sapphire. That said, the **ruby** cabochons of the few platinum Cartier models are dead sexy. Best, Tim

As others have said, there is an 8 year warranty with the Cartier, also, Cartier is the only company that promises to service every watch they have ever made, regardless of it's age - not so with Rolex. Rhodium plating is used on the dial because it's brighter and whiter than white gold (and more expensive than platinum). Blue dial Rolex 41 DJs are now trading on Chrono24 at the same money as the Cartier - so I'm seriously struggling to find a reason for anyone to get the significantly uglier Rolex. Cartier lost their way and made little of interest for nearly a century, but they are right back in play with this watch.

Could you give me a reference point for the Rhodium plating dial on the Cartier? I really like this piece and just doing some research to see where can I find it pre-owned.

@@cheekykid My apologies, in the video Tim says it's rhodium plated but that's not correct, it's actually palladium plated - another rare white metal from the platinum family. Palladium is the metal of choice by Cartier now as it's harder wearing for when they plate items that touch skin, whereas Rhodium is softer and can wear. Of course, there is no such thing as natural white gold - gold is yellow, so what is used on the Rolex is a gold alloy which is then plated in rhodium or palladium anyway. To say that "white gold markers" is an advantage to the Rolex is merely to fall for their marketing hype, you're looking at $10 of gold at most and rhodium or palladium plating in any case.

I love the Cartier. But the bracelet system while awesome - it is to proprietary restrictive in that way - foolish to worry i know , i am Sure i wont out live it. Cartier design is a gorgeous signiture mix of military case design and classic highly visible and functional Roman font. But - I would take the Rolex. Great competition Tim. Cartier surely deserves a shot at the title. 👍. Thanks

True, most quick-release lugs require frustrating proprietary systems. Aside from JLC's old Master Compressor Extreme (and MC Chronograph 2, and Amvox 7) system, I can't think of a single other aftermarket compatible quick-release lug system that doesn't simply employ pull-tab spring bars like Patek or FP Journe. That said, Panerai has gotten around this issue with various screw, retaining bar, and spring-tab systems that preserve the option of after market straps, but the swap is slower. Best, Tim

Hard choice. Is the Cartier a scratch magnet? Beautiful watch. Love that it feels new in design for such a storied watch. I own a Datejust and would go with the Cartier from change of pace perspective. Running with the crowd is getting old.

To be fair, they're equally susceptible to scratches. The Cartier only has a reputation for this because it's more elaborately sculpted with narrow bevels and clear breaks between satin and polished surfaces. AP's Royal Oak and Patek's Nautilus have the same reputation for the same reason. The Rolex has large swaths of uniformly polished steel and few hard character lines that can be disrupted by abrasions. It's not that the Rolex doesn't scratch, but it's less ornate and less likely to display flaws in complex faceting. Best, Tim

Santos is better than the datejust and submariner which cost $3 to 7k more than the Cartier. I own the black dial 2020 model.... My favorite watch in my collection and I own several rolexes

Hi i was wondering for a first watch would you do a 36mm rolex datejust blue face jubilee bracelet an fluted bezel or would you do a cartier santos WSSA0030 both brand new from a authorized dealer also do you think that the cartier will hold its value like rolex or am i better off just getting a rolex thank you for your time i hope you have a great day an look forward to hearing what you have to say. Also im not hoping that the cartier will go up in value just maintaing a fair price thank you

@@steve-mb7us Cartier Santos Large... it comes with an extra strap...either rubber or leather. The Santos seems to be holding value.... I nearly purchased a used one but found the black dial at the AD. The customer svc between Rolex and Cartier is really different...the Cartier AD was much better and they were very patient with me.... I have purchased three watches at the Rolex AD ... I am not impressed with their Customer service. The date just will not go up much... the sports watches jump up. You need to ask yourself what and why are you getting the watch, to wear and appreciate or flip? Especially your first luxury watch....my advise buy it and keep it. The Cartier Santos is inspired by the first wrist watch and pilot's watch.... that's history

It is truly beautiful. That said, I would have to reserve that for special occasions like weddings, rare formal attire business meeting, maybe nice dinners out. I could not wear that watch regularly without feeling pretty. Ridiculous. That's just me. Great paired with something like a Tudor Pelagos or a Fifth Fathoms... Ah ...
