The Rolex Explorer II with the white dial (reference 216570) is nicknamed the 'Polar' and Rolex push an adventurous image for this watch in all of their marketing for it. In this video UK watchmaker Richard Perrett, who also happens to be 'Arctic Survival Trained', gives his opinion on this piece by Rolex.

I love it as well, spent over an year finding my Birth year 1973 Steve McQueen Rolex Explorer 1655 with boxes, papers, service history all original with patina, scratches & all. But in very good condition, I most likely overpaid for it, but it was one of those watches you get only one chance at, so I pulled the trigger. Then two days later the 1972 popped up on the radar of a seller that knew I was in the market for a 1973, but called anyway, same deal with box & papers as it happens its my wife birth tear but she has moved away from Rolex in recent years to AP or her vintage Longine collection, the 1972 model as considerably cheaper not a Steve McQueen, but I really just wanted a 1973 Explorer so I pulled the trigger on this as well. Thanks for your VLOGS & content as I find them very interesting as an enthusiast & watch collector now for half my life 23 years. Keep up the good work & as I say #KeepMovingForward

Wonderful, wonderful, review! I love your channel Richard. The main reason is the fact you are a watchmaker. Other opinions are just that. Pious, Pretentious, and somewhat biased... You on the the other hand, give it to us from a watchmaker's stand point. The real deal. Your channel boasts super high-end, and budget minded models. And you give your honest opinion from someone who knows watches inside and out. Thank you for making this channel!!! Keep up the great work!!!

Another enjoyable video thank you 👍. This polar explorer was my first Rolex purchased over 4 years ago and still one of my favourites... probably my best daily/travel watch in my collection, wears easily, quite slim under the cuff of a shirt and doesn't shout out as a look at me watch. Great piece...it's only weak point I would say is the brushed bezel can scratch quite easily. Maybe consider a review of the understated Rolex Airking 116900...I think it's more interesting than some realise? Thanks.

regarding 6:50 : you said "[...] are THE BEST springbars [...]" - could you please show what distinguishes a good springbar from a bad one? I have something like 30-40 pairs from various aftermarket straps and past watches and extra buys, and there seems to be quite some variatiosn in the ridge shapes, thicknes/thinness, proportions... but IDK which ones would be the "good" ones. A guide/advice video, on what to look for in springbars, would be really useful.

A very nice timepiece, no doubt. Though this is a suited for 'Polar exploration' as my old carcass !! It surprises me, being 'Polar warfare trained', you didn't point out that a metal bracelet is the very last thing you want in Arctic circumstances. You also didn't mention that the 24 hour hand is basically to avoid confusion in the Polar region between night and day.... given that it's dark there for about half a year! All the other stuff is incidental and can be used to convince people to buy the watch, even if they never go near any snow or ice..let along the Polar regions! Rolex spent five years developing the Niobium hairspring...true.... a lot of that time will have been 'field-tests' being a recall of test watches and and doing a 'postmortem' on the hairsprings. So let's not exaggerate this. This is a nice movement, there is no debating that, but there are several watches of this price category around that might be a lot more understated, and even give you more 'bang for your buck' in terms of elegance and durability. Maybe I am just as biased as you are, in that I am not really keen on these models.... but it seems to me this is about as silly as people donning a Breitling-Bentley, whilst driving around in a Nissan Micra! (and I do like Breitling) The older, less ostentatious Rolex watches, were, to my mind, a lot more elegant and a lot more timeless. This type of watch screams "look at me, have you seen my Rolex!?" Not my cup of tea... Hugs!! Paddy
@richardperrettwatchmaker
@richardperrettwatchmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Paddy ... this is such a great comment! As for the metal bracelet I would not be too fussed about that. I am already carting around 10Lbs of metal SA80, four metal magazines, a metal cooking stove even my ski bindings are metal and all these get very cold. So cold my fingers stick to the metal if I dare to remove my gloves. My watch on the other hand is pretty much always on my wrist so if it is at minus 25 then it is not a problem for me but an opportunity for someone else as I am already dead! That said I might swap it for a NATO Strap. The value of the GMT in Polar regions mid summer and mid winter is well made and I missed a trick there I figure. You are correct I am biased and for a brand that does not get a lot of love in the watchmaker's fraternity ...sorry, I can't help myself, I just love Rolex. Hugs back! Richard

Richard, the intro was super. I didn't know you were a trained arctic survivor.. So I expected a real harsh outdoor test of this beautiful Explorer 2. Real low temperatures, frozen solid bracelets on swollen blistered wrists. Frozen eyelids, so telling the time would be problematic. Richard on the North pole, trying to work out 24 time zones on one square meter...fun. Sir Edmund Hillary was wearing a Rolex Explorer on a long canvas band, not a metal bracelet obviously and he also carried a Smith watch all the way to the top in 1953. Messner did it again in 1978 without oxygen this time and with a Rolex Oysterquartz. So yes a beautiful watch, rugged no doubt, but nobody tests these things in real conditions. There even are no specs for this watch available. Does it really keeps time at -50 degrees C ? I guess it would become one solid lump of metal and frozen oil inside. OK, try this. Go to the nearest distribution centre for frozen food. Put this watch on ice and come back 24 hours later. That would be a fun video made at minus 40 degrees.... Good luck.

Hi Rene ... I have been working on my intros so am pleased you noticed that ... the issue then is to fulfill the promise of the intro. Sadly I didn't have the budget to shoot this is northern Norway but stay tuned and one nice crisp cold day I will shoot the video you would have like to have seen. Regarding the bracelet I am not convinced it's such an issue. My dog tags were metal but like my wrist always warm regardless of the outside temperature. I lugged around a 10Lb weapon, four metal magazines, a metal camping stove and even mt ski bindings were metal and all these things got very cold, so cold that if I dared remove my gloves my fingers stuck to the metal. If my watch and dog tags were that cold then it would not be a problem to me but rather and opportunity for someone else as I would already be dead! Good to hear from you Rene! Richard

In Rolex movements can you damage the movement by quick setting the date while the date change mechanism is engaged like other watches? Do you have to set the time to, say, 6 o’clock before changing the date or can the movement not be damaged via the crown no matter what you do? With my sub I’m careful but I’m sure it’s not necessary.

Just a bit of Rolex historical mythology if I may - it's meant to have the 'Adventurer' image as you say, but perhaps not that of the Everest summiteer - that's the preserve of the Explorer 1. The Explorer 2 is more about polar and cave exploration, hence the 24-hr function. Although today it can function as a GMT-hand, the fourth 'orange' hand was originally conceived as a simple 24-hr hand which could not be independently set (as is the case with the first version, 1972 I believe), so that in a cave or in polar regions when it's not straightforward to know if it's 8:30 in the morning or 8:30 in the evening the fourth hand will tell you. With the subsequent two editions, as your video shows, you can also use it as a poor man's GMT II, but that's not the ethos of this watch.

Hi Yasha V .... Seiko 5 is a good choice and Seiko was of course very popular in Vietnam as they were sold in the PX. I would have no qualms about wearing a Rolex on operations. I figure if I am risking my neck then so what it the watch gets lost or broken .... in 1993 I lost a nice camera in central Bosnia in a place where there was a lot of fighting going on. The insurance company wanted to know if I had reported the loss the the police so I had to explain that locally there was a bit of dispute as to who the legitimate police force was where I lost the camera. Amazingly they paid my claim ... not sure they would for a $7K Rolex though! Thanks for the feedback! Richard

Fine video,Richard. Lots of good macro, and your watchmaker insights add a great deal of depth to your flowing, humourous yet appropriatly deferential narrative. And your military experience enhances this further. Personally, with somewhat limited knowledge of watch making, I prefer JLC movements and aspire to own one of these fine timepieces some day. I just think JLC have, and continue to, raise the bar for watch making excellence, while offering their superlative timepieces at prices similar to, or even below,Rolex. I wonder what watch you would choose? Anyway, I really enjoy your videos and respect the time and effort you put in. Over and out. Niallv

A brilliant review Richard 👍 I’ve got the black and the white but the newer version, the 226 with the 70h power reserve. I’ve notice by winding up the watches that the one has a lovely satisfying clicking sound and the other has a very fine sound like you would on a cheap movement for example entrance level Seiko. Both are from the local Rolex AD, any idea what this can be? Much appreciated
@josevasquez1781

I own both 226 new for two full weeks and I noticed that going back and forth the same thing, my new white 226 had a smooth crunch when winding and the black version also new had a grinding louder grinding sound to it, but after a few times the black starting settling in after popping in/out the crown, it's almost like two gears weren't leveled where the teeth weren't perfectly aligned, It's weird but both models sound smooth and pleasantly with a crunching fresh articulate sound if that makes any sense. We all know what cheap calibers sound like which is no where near a Patek or Glashutte winding experience. My AD informed me that the watches are indeed recent model but more so recently manufacture.

The 24 hand on a fixed 24/h bezel is especially useful. If you're actually living in a cave in 24 hour darkness, you will always know which is midnight and which is 12pm

On the Rolex website they just refer to the orange hand as a 24 hour hand. So, it just shows the local time in 24 hour format? No reference to it being a really useful second time zone tracker - or GMT - hand. I read that before and dismissed the watch. Now I’m getting more interested. Cheers for the info.

When possible (once you have one on the repair bench or somesuch), I'd love to see your take on the miyota 9015 movement. It seems to be gathering quite the reputation for being good.

Hi Eliijs ... yes the Miyota movements are very respectable, I have a couple of new ones that I got just to see what they are like and I was impressed. Thanks for the feedback. Richard

I have a smiths Everest 36mm with a miyota 9015 and it’s been running great! Around +4spd using a tool app on IOS. Not a super accurate way to check accuracy but I get consistent readings. Plus side is it’s a slim movement and help keeps the watch slimmer than let’s say my seiko watches

I have a Miyota 9015 in a Helson Sharkdiver 45. It’s probably as good as any other USD600-700 watch with a 9015. I’ve worn it 24h/day for extended periods in order to test its accuracy. New, it was consistently +8 s/day. After one year, it was +12 s/day. Now, after five years, it’s +15 to +20 s/day and if I leave it crown down, it loses 20+ s/12h. It’s been used gently, never abused and degaussed periodically. As far as I’m concerned, even though my sample size is just one watch, it’s a disposable movement. I’ll never buy another 9015. As much as we want to believe that shortcuts and bargains exist in this world, they rarely do. Quality and reliable performance cost what they do for a reason. Rolex may be known for quality control problems, however, I still believe they are worth the retail price. So for me, a Deepsea will likely be the replacement. Unless the new Seiko Spring Drive SNR031 really is as good as it is said to be…

VaiSolo like you, I’ve only have one miyota movement but like I said, mine has been rock solid. For the price I’m very happy. If I could afford a Rolex I’d get one. But I did just buy an Omega Seamaster 300m midsize. It’s the ceramic dial version without the wavy pattern. Very happy !!

Hi Richard. The Explorer is my favourite Rolex watch. For the purpose of purity, Rolex fabricate all their own metals. They have their own laboratories that enable them to do that, and much more.

Richard Perrett Watchmaker. Ja, I had visions of you showing its toughness! I own the Explorer 214270 and a GMT aka the Batman. However this watch has grown on me over the past couple of years and I’ve decided to part with a couple of other pieces I own in order to purchase this beauty. It’s good to see your watch being used and not kept in a box. I bought my first Rolex a GMT 2, Coke (Swiss dial) 1998 with a gratuity from the airline I was working with. That watch was on my wrist, continuously until I bought my Batman in 2016. I enjoyed the knowledge that I was wearing a watch designed for the job I was doing, and it never let me down. The modern flight deck has a plethora of clocks, so it’s unlikely I’ll ever have to rely solely on my mechanical watch. But it’s good to know it’s there, and at least I can check the accuracy of the movement against the clocks on board. The coke I’ll keep to give to my son on his 21st. Keep up the interesting reviews.
