Couldn’t agree more! Explore II instantly became my daily wearer from the day it joined my collection. I originally bought this black dial Explore II as a much-earlier-to-get temporary substitute for the Batman I wanted. But I have grown to love its discreetness which contributes a lot to its absolute versatility overall.

Sorry but this is just No if we're talking a TT with standard 18k gold bezel... a soft, fluted material just doesn't hold up to daily wear unless you take it off every time you do the slightest work. Which, if you do will wear the clasp out instead. Just so you know, for some "one watch" means you basically Never take it off, except to clean it. Perhaps no longer warranted in this day of cell phones, and lume on older watches can be a challenge to read, half asleep, w/one eye open... Personally i feel if your going to be saddled with gold fluted bezel, just go straight to the President. The you get the day-of-the-week, which is a Really nice complication, really very Rolexy, and once you retire a great sense of ease (kicks back, puts feet up... "what day is it again" 😉) ~

Great episode. For me, a versatile watch is a GADA watch - goes anywhere, does anything. The two Rolexes that best fit that description for me are my 36mm OP and my 36mm Explorer. The difference? My OP (with green dial) is classy, yet also sporty. The Explorer is sporty, yet also classy. Both are appropriate with a suit and tie at a wedding or business meeting, or with a swim suit at the pool or beach.

Great video. I don't think I could boil it down to a single option. For me, the bracelet plays a crucial role when it comes to versatility so a person needs at least one Oyster and one Jubilee in the collection. And so with that for me its something like: 1) DJ with Jubilee and smooth bezel. 2) Either A) Sub No Date or B) Exp II. This gives one of each of the iconic bracelets and one each of the sports and classic cases. Boom, you've got all situations covered.

For me it is the JC Deepsea. I have owned, pre ceramic and ceramic Subs, date and no date variations, 36mm Explorer and black dial and polar Ex2 (5 digit versions) and also pre ceramic Sea Dweller. Last month I consolidated my collection into one watch. The JC. It suits my casual/smart casual style and I find it’s sinks into my wrist, so the profile does not appear to thick. I have owned many brands of watches over my last 13 years of crazy watch obsession, but finally have that one watch to rule them all. Been just over a month, so will see how it goes.

I have a black dial DJ on oyster with smooth bezel. Personally I feel the elements of polishing give it that extra versatility over an OP or ExII in a dressier setting, but still more muted than precious metals/fluted bezel variants. Picked it for the versatility option, so it’s fun to see one of my favorite content creators address the same subject! The Pepsi gmt would be my second choice as most versatile as the added gmt function would be great (same as per your arguments for the exii), but I prefer it on a jubilee which would be a bit more ostentatious even though I’ve seen it work amazingly with all outfits. Keep up the great work

Good discussion, valuable rundown of all the core models. On choice I would say it is personal. The most versatile daily wear would depend on what you do daily ? Any choice would not be one size fits all, whether someone is in business, sport, adventure, pilot, diver, musician, would indicate that persons best suited 'daily wearer'. So to try to answer the question in your title, I reckon there is no single answer. There will be people who are in the one and done camp but they are rare in our world. Me ? I now have over 50 pieces from many watch brands to cover what I am doing, where I am, work, pub, wedding or even who I will be with or basically just what mood I am in. This could never be covered by one piece. Its a bit like the guitars that appear behind you, Fender, Martin, Gibson, there is no one size fits all. Could you pick just one ??

Great Video! Also, a tough subject, since there are many good choices. I think I have narrowed it down to a clear winner. Number 1 is the two tone GMT, especially the one released this year with the black and grey bezel. This watch can do anything for me. There is a bit more going on with the dial, it's basically a submariner, it can do both dressy and casual. I also like to switch straps and I think it looks really good with NATOs and rubber straps and since there is a little gold on it, I have my daily bit of bling and get to collect my scratches, although I think an oyster bracelet is a more fitting choice to get scratches. To elaborate a bit on the topic of scratches, I like wear on my watches. I think this gives a watch more character and gold gets scratched easier.

Speaking of versatility, I think size and thickness is an important criteria. Rolex is indeed king of versatility, but with increasing sizes of 41, 42mm I feel that limits choices for smaller wrists if « discretion » is an important factor (I think it is). Sub, GMT, Milgauss, Air King, Explorer II used to be thinner and smaller, more wearable for the smaller wrists…. A shame it’s no longer the case.

I love the Explorer 2, but for me, the bezel precludes it from being “a watch for every occasion”. For the handful of nights a year that I attend a black tie event, I’d be unhappy with the X2. My slightly left-field pick would be the Milgauss. The anti-mag is as important (if not more) as water resistance in the modern world. That being said, sadly I can’t really afford either of them! 😢

I have just sold my Milgauss GV Black, I wear my Tudor Pelagos FXD mn23 and Seiko Bullhead 1976 in rotation. My 2000 Sea Dweller is unworn since 2014. I think the Santos de Cartier is ultimately a great versatile watch, from Dress, to Water and everything in between

The great thing about Rolex is that every model can be an everyday wear. That said, Explorer 1 gets my vote right now.

Great breakdown! Thanks for sharing your thoughts as it gave me a slightly different way to think about it. In terms of my life- a no date Sub would probably be the most utilitarian. BTW, nice teaser there at the end!!! Can’t wait for that one!

Steel Oyster Perpetual or Date Just with a smooth bezel is the most versatile Rolex there is. Good mix of Dress and Sports. GMT Master II is also in the conversation.

I don't care what anyone says, nobody will ever convince me a dive watch is suitable to wear with a suit. Formal dress requires a formal dress watch. I love my dive watch, but I would never consider wearing it with a suit. The architecture of the Oyster Perpetual case works better as a compromise between informal and formal dress - dependent on scale. I say scale not size because on a small wrist a 34mm might be the right scale whereas a larger watch on a larger wrist will be appropriate. A large Oyster Perpetual on a small wrist will not work with formal dress, and is therefore less versatile. A subtly scaled O.P. case, particularly in steel, will work for formal dress (which is the harder side to satisfy), but will be perfect for casual attire. In my opinion, there are no dive watches that are truly flexible/versatile enough to satisfy the requirements of formal dress. It's like trainers with a suit, you can do it of course, but I don't think it ever really works.

Beg to differ. Two tone submariner specifically the bluesy can be worn formal and then at the same time would be at home on the beach.

Well now, I have a white gold fluted 41 datejust and find it a bit too flashy for the day to day. And likely to get me robbed. I await the Gods of Rolex to deign me worthy of an EII. Not too flashy for daily wear as a physician, often for some very poor people, and tough enough to stand all the hand washing. The brushing is great. So- hoping for one soon.

Great video, as usual. You are the master of "setting up questions" or "raising issues" that are quintessentially representative of our madness as watch collectors, and of course they have no objective answer or solution. I particularly identify with this one because I feel like I've spent half of my 34 years on this planet asking myself the same thing! Bravo, maestro!

And for anyone interested: just a fun little story of my quest :) 1. I fell in love with the Milgauss when I was 18, and after 7 years of not being able to afford it, I finally got myself one. 2. However, perhaps out of fear of wearing it, scratching it... getting robbed... my brain became obsessed with the idea of adding a "one-and-done" perfect "every day" Rolex... and after months of research and mental gymnastics I concluded the 14060M was the one and only watch anyone would ever need and the most versatile, too. 3. They were everywhere... all of a sudden I saw submariners everywhere. Ubiquitous to London, Munich, Paris, New York... everywhere I went there it was, laughing at me. At ME, the great survivor and explorer of Zone 1 and the Eurostar... versed in multiple expeditions to Richmond Park and yearly diving expeditions to Ibiza. I couldn't stand it. Such was my disillusionment I sold it after only a year. 4. I was going to outsmart them all: The perfect Rolex... nobody knew was a Rolex... 40mm Exp2 polar on a grey nato. Perfection, the ultimate "if you know you know" watch, with GMT functionality! I did it!!! But... why does the cyclops bother me so much... and wouldn't the black version have been even more understated and "field watch-y"? Gosh imagine a black Exp2 on a khaki nato.... but what about the cyclops? Ffff*****ck. 5. The explorer ONE was the one I had been looking for! Of course!!! It was so obvious... but... those numerals... I don't wanna say anything because surely not every watch collector ever can be wrong... right? They are awfully chavvy.... but what if the real explorer was hiding in plain sight? Black OP39.... brown leather strap or nato... boom. Just another watch to 99.9% of the population, but MY true luxury field watch. And then I can put on a black alligator strap on and turn it into the classiest of dress watches!! I am basically James Bond. Many, MANY straps and iPhone pics later... after years of exciting undercover missions to work, Sainsbury's, and Tate Modern and Mark's on Saturdays... I made the fatal mistake of asking myself the question: Is this watch... is it a bit boring? I love everything about it, the strap game, how understated it is, the symmetry... but I wish it had something... just a little something to make me smile every now and then. If only there was a time only, symmetrical watch just like this one, just a bit more fun...! And then it hit me, and it hit me hard... 8 years... 8 years (!) I had been obsessing over this... could it be? I went to my safety deposit box... I took it out... I held a khaki canvas strap over the bracelet and... perfection. Rolex Milgauss GV black on a military khaki strap.

The "Polar" Explorer 2 shines best in low light. This is when you see all of the different subtleties that make this a special watch. Most notably the brushed bezel, the thin polishing on the edge, the domed glass, the glint of the "ROLEX" on the rehaut, the raised and over-sized hour markers - all of these get a bit washed-out when in daylight, in the arctic landscape you all envision visiting with this watch. But, it is in the low light in your living room that all of these little details stand out and make you appreciate how much more dynamic this watch is than your Sub or even GMT Master 2. I own both and love them and actually wear them more than my Explorer 2 but with the help of this review it is clearer to me why I will always have the "Polar".

Fantastic video: I can tell you that the no date 114060 sub is a tremendous travel watch. It’s under the radar, versatile, goes with everything, glidelock clasp makes it always comfortable, and doesn’t wave “rob me” to onlookers. A superb, near perfect watch even 75 years after its release.

I’m wearing my polar 226570 right now but I also own a Sub date, Datejust41 on oyster bracelet and an Air King 116900. I would say the DJ41 on oyster is most versatile as it’s quite sporty on oyster, you can dress it up or down, I’ve worn it with a Tux and with cargo shorts and sliders. You can’t do that with any of the others, the Explorer 2 is too sporty, it can’t do formal. The Air King 116900 is even more versatile but it doesn’t have a date so I don’t wear it much. The sub is also more versatile than the Exp 2 but it’s no good for formal wear only James Bomd can pull that off.

My black dial Explorer II hasn't been off my wrist since I picked it up about 6 weeks ago. Has everything you need, unless that's a rotating bezel for timing purposes. It is a large watch though, so with the black dial appearing slightly smaller than the polar, I would say this is the more versatile option.
