Rolex Sea Dweller 126600 vs Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver 15710ST.OO.A002C is the day's match, and it's a sink or swim battle of luxury dive watches!
The 43mm Rolex Sea Dweller 43, also called the 4000 and the "50th Anniversary Sea Dweller," launched at Baselworld 2017. This Sea Dweller is more rugged than a Submariner and more wearable than a Rolex Deepsea.
The Rolex dive watch incorporates a helium escape valve, a Rolex Oyster bracelet, an Oyster clasp with Rolex Glidelock and Fliplock, and a dial graced with Rolex Chromalite luminance paint. Inside the case sits a Rolex caliber 3235 automatic movement with COSC Swiss chronometer certification and 70-hour power reserve.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver was redesigned for SIHH 2015 with a new dial and a sapphire display casebook. Unlike the Rolex, the 42mm Royal Oak Offshore Diver employs an internal unidirectional diving bezel that is set by its own crown. A full Royal Oak inspired stainless steel bracelet and clasp keep the Royal Oak Offshore Diver anchored to its owner.
The case of the Royal Oak Offshore Diver is water resistant to 300 meters. It encloses an Audemars Piguet manufacture caliber 3120 automatic movement. The AP 3120 includes a quickset date, hacking seconds (stop seconds), 40 jewels, a 22-karat engraved winding mass, and a 60-hour power reserve. The free sprung balance and full balance bridge help to stabilize an oversized balance that beats a t 21,600 vibrations per hour.

The Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 features a 43mm stainless steel case with a black Cerachrom bezel surrounding a black dial on a stainless steel Oyster bracelet with folding buckle. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds and date.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver features a 42mm stainless steel case surrounding a silver Tapisserie dial on a black rubber strap with a stainless steel tang buckle. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, helium release valve and date.

I prefer the Audemars Piguet Offshore instead of the Rolex Sea Dweller. I like the AP nice dial, nice display case back that show a beautiful gold rotor and movement. I like the AP big and beautiful bracelet. Tim I have to admit the Rolex Sea Dweller is a better financial deal then the expensive AP.

if you want a real high-end diver with a hand finished movement, you should go for a Blancpain fifty fathoms Bathyscaphe (and in ceramic if you want it to be scratch proof).

The AP is simply in another league, it trounces the Rolex. Love it on the bracelet! SD43 is also a great watch but to compare it with the AP Diver is laughable.

From a technical standpoint, I'd choose the Rolex Sea Dweller, but do we make decisions based on technical advantages alone? The AP Royal Oak Offshore Diver is a baller watch! I'll go for the AP ROO!

There have been reports by a number of SD43 owners that the bracelet squeaks....(I used to also own one that did squeak from time to time). Not a big fan of the "lesser" finishing in the rolex. I bought the watch in the first place because I had thought it would be robust and well made. It may very well still be robust but the squeaky bracelet suggests that the manufacturing is not flawless.

I really like the AP here. My main problem with the brand is they only have one dealer in Chicago and it really sucks/has very very very few AP watches. It feels like AP may be dropping them. I need to visit New York so I can check out some of these in the metal.

Both watches have their pros and cons from a technical point of view. Judging both watches just by their aesthetics I would always go for the Audemars Piguet since it has so much more to offer here. Besides that, Rolex watches are everywhere. I am sick of seeing all those ubiquitous Subs, Sea Dwellers and what not and I don't even own one...

Very fun - grail piece show down with fantastic close up images. That AP seems particularly spectacular - the images in this video really conveyed more fine detail , artistry and highly nuanced craftmanship then I had ever appreciated - I have never seen one in the metal - . I prefer the AP for these reasons - . Although tougher - I would have to treat the Rolex equally careful given it's tremendous value therefore it's tougher design serves little practical value in my hands and current pieces. The fantasy would be the AP for me - with my 2007 Omega PO , Explorer, and Seiko Orange monster as daily drivers. Well done watchbox team - thx again and Happy New Year. 🎈

Nice comparison. i have the SD50 and I admite the refinement of The ROyal Oak Offshore but the versatility, easy wearability, durability and value appreciation makes me choose again the SD43 over the RO. I just don't get the AP Royal Oaks. The design seems dated to me, and the recessed screws in the bezel are idiotic. They are recessed with a hex head, which means they can't turn. If they can't turn, why are they slotted??

Flipped a JC DSSD For the AP Diver with black dial, then flipped the AP for the SD43. The AP was a scratch magnet and the crown pinion seemed too flimsy for such a watch

The AP Diver is really a show off watch, not a tool diver (however I would argue the rolex is also not a proper tool watch with the lack of anti-reflective coating and shiny looks)...if you want a real high-end diver with hand finished movements, you should go for Blancpain fifty fathoms Bathyscaphe (and in ceramic if you want it to be scratch proof).

Did I actually read someone calling the Royal Oak dated? Compared to the Rolex which is quite simply the laziest concept from the least imaginative brand in the history of horology. Looks like every Sub ever made over the past 500 years. I own several Audemars, as well as my platinum Daytona and D-blue and the quality between the two clearly seems wasted on people who have convinced themselves that their mass produced Submariner is the only piece worthy if their attention. Rolex have spent a long time restricting access to productions of watches that will eventually number millions of pieces and be just as boring in twenty years time. When they decide to update it and make it look exactly the same. In fact, the only watch they did release that was even slightly interesting was the RG Yachtmaster on Oysterflex and that was slated. Admit it, you like Rolex because they haven't changed anything and the reason you approve is because strangers see it and instantly recognise what you are wearing. I smile when I see someone wearing their black ceramic Sub and trying ever so hard to wave it around. Right up until they notice the Messidor on my wrist and realise they have brought a Ford Mondeo to a Supercar meet up. Be honest about why you like it. You simply enjoy other people's reactions to you wearing it. Nobody takes it seriously in high end, trust me. They are over priced beater tool watches. Deal with it.

Lol. AP has only RO which is iconic yet was designed by Genta. Which possibly saved the company. Also it scratches way too easy. Will see have they manage to maintain relevant with the only popular model. On the other hand Rolex have several iconic models.

I like the luster of the AP better. And thanks for posting today, only other choice being Watchbox's ArchieLuxury - Zach Rigo. When he isn't insulting watch enthusiasts owning brands he doesn't approve of, he's outright advocating violence against same. Talk about biting the hand that feeds...

Unless you’re actually a saturation diver, or, for that matter, just someone who dives often, probably the Rolex. As I live in a landlocked state, I would have to to prefer the AP. It is elegant and truly a work of art yet still provides adequate water resistance and is robust enough to be worn for all occasions.

Is the AP capable of operating the internal dive bezel underwater? Other internal bezel divers I've seen lack that feature so I'm curious.

Sadly no but very few owners would take it deep enough to worry about it. Same with Rolex tbh. Not many estate agents also go diving wearing their beloved Subs.

AP offshore is an ugly watch. Original Genta design is beautiful. Rolex is the one. The greatest diving watch ever made. Rolex watches wear so well & cheaper to service!

The Rolex wins hands down. AP might as well rename themselves as Royal Oak as their breadth of pieces is poor. The carbuncle that is the elapsed time tracker is just an abomination at this price point and resembles a toothpaste tube top. The SD43 will can take a hammering whereas the AP is primarily for show......

I would take the Rolex hands down. I could live with that Rolex being the only watch I'll ever need. I truly can't say that for the AP. It's just too flashy in design. Plus I would get that blank Rolex case back engraved with my son's name and pass it down to him in the future.

Nobody wearing either one of these is going to dive in anything than their 8' deep backyard pool after too much overpriced tequila. I sorta got tired of wearing the same looking Rolex everybody and their Uber Driver has so I opted for the AP ROO Chrono Diver in tangerine. It's my Summer fun at the pool watch.

The SD43 is slightly gaudy also..shiny tool watch with a squeaky bracelet. I owned one ..was disappointed. Had the finishing been better and they had better anti-glare coating, I would be a fan.
