I cannot figure out why Rolex no longer offer OP with 3,6,9 dials. Anyone remember the days when they allowed you to change the dial on new watches if you decided you no longer liked it after a few months ? Yes Rolex actually used to believe in customer service back in the day...

There have been some talks about reliability issues with Rolex 32XX series movements. Some claim it’s because of the extended power reserve (70hrs). On the other the 31XX series are perceived as rock solid and easy to work on. Proven over decades. If I’d get a Rolex it had to be an Explorer II Polar dial, reference 16570.

Love how directly and lovely you point out: The movement, not the cosmetic :) The true fact: 90% of the Rolex Owners are not interested in watch, or in the movement. They simply buy it for the social status only. I have 3 friends wearing Rolexes and they absolutely know nothing. One even asked me when he has to have his Rolex battery changed. :)

All that Rolex achieves with it holding back supply to keep demand high is that it sells less watches than it could. Utter genius right there. Cracks me up. 😂 My one and only favourite is the Explorer 214270 MkII. 😊

Most of the watch wearers I've talked to about their watch is about the case they don't know much or anything about the movement other than how many jewels. Perhaps they know the difference between whether or not it's self-winding or battery powered. For most people I think it's more jewelry than a tool.

I have seen complaints about the newest Rolex movement on Rolex forums . Some owners have said that after a year or so the movement starts to run slow and has to be serviced under warranty . Have you heard about this issue ?? My 1984 Rolex Datejust purchased new looks and runs flawlessly . I was going to buy a new Sub for my 70th birthday but after reading about the movement issue on various forms, I bought a Tudor Pelagos instead with Tudors in house movement a terrific watch ! My wife and I both enjoy your channel very informative and interesting! Thank you & Best ! Russ

Love this topic Kalle. Another topic that interests me is what is involved in changing a movement's beat rate. I have read that modifying the mainspring and perhaps the winding system is involved, but I am sure there is a bit more to it than.that. Perhaps you could explore this topic one day? Thank you for your excellent and informative videos. John Allen, Ottawa 😊

Excellent Kalle! I’m not a Rolex fan but got to know these things. As I heard on KZfaq elsewhere, Rolex kept movements the same for about 10 years using the movement in most of their watches, then they make a small change/improvement and keep that going for about 10 years, don’t know how true this is? I’m also a movement guy and polishing generally only for extream cases of scratches. Since Tudor are getting more press/visibility a video like this for Tudor? Also, not that I’m a big Tudor fan either. P.S. I thought you are always drunk sinse you are laughing, truthful and drinking coffee to sober up😅

I have recently discovered your channel. It’s great to have watchmaker’s perspective on movements. I know there are over 500 videos on the channel. So maybe it’s been covered already. But I’d love to see a video on shock protection. Another idea would be to compare a common ebauche like ETA 2824/2892 or its Sellita version with comparable in-house calibers. In terms of performance, but also reliability and serviceability. In terms of ETA and Sellita it’s interesting to look at different grades from the above perspective. Cheers!

he already did.. Simplest construction possible.. If you want to call it a tool watch be my guest.. A diver is called a tool watch these days as well.. You can dive with it is the tool part covered.. Back to the explorer. It has a fixed bezel (Non-rotating) Instead it has a visible lumenius 24 hour hand that you can set in a cave somewhere where it is dark, and thus calculate passed time in conjunction with the watch main feature telling time.. Any practival usage? You be the judge, to me a simple non complication to add a freesprung hand that has the reversed function of a dive watch and thus in need of an extra hand to basically do the same thing.. You rotate a hand aligned wird a fixed bezel in Explorer, and you rotate a click bezel and compare to the time telling hands in a dive watch.. Same movement, exact same movement with no alteration at all can be installed in an explorer and a submariner..

Interesting that you said Rolex became more innovative about 20 years ago, because this was around the time Rolex bought out the movement side of the business from the Aegler family, who owned it,because Jean Aegler, their relative, was supplying rolex movements back when rolex was just getting started. Maybe the Aegler family held back innovation for some reason, but who knows? Fabulous channel by the way!

Carl love your show bro, but the Skydweller is the only Rolex that isn't like any other watch, for that reason i do love it, lets have it rite a seamaster is better than a sub and half the price, Rolex is high quality but you can get a high quality watch for less money and don't have to worry about getting mugged for it when you go out the house. well that's my rant for the day but I do love the skydweller sir.Andy.

There is one thing that strikes me about Rolex, whenever I see one under a microscope, whether on Kalle's channel or one of the other KZfaq watchmakers. The internal finishes are not especially ornate. There is no engine turning, and what little engraving there is is strictly utilitarian. BUT, as simple as the finishes are, there is a level of consistency and precision about them, that you can easily mistake them for computer renderings. With other brands, when I see them under a microscope, I can see little burrs here and there, little inconsistencies in the anglage, a few rounded corners, maybe a few parts that simply have a stamped finish, maybe some inconsistency in the graining. With Rolex, every finish appears absolutely perfect and consistent, even under high magnification.

I look at it the same way - I love the technicality of the movement and seeing a finished watch is great, but I wouldn't call myself a 'watch guy'. Totally not a collector of much of anything. Also, I'm showing my ignorance here but, you mention often that Rolex is kind of middle of the pack. What watches or brands would you put above Rolex (marketing) and nearer the top of the industry?

Not asking much... Anyway, I agree I am more interested on keeping the inside of the watch in good condition and don't care so much about the outside.
