I own both the Sub and the blue YM. Both are great watches, but the YM is a whole different level. Absolutely spectacular. It’s been my daily wear for a few years now and still looks amazing. The “delicate” platinum bezel is still in pristine condition. It’s no where near as fragile as you have been led to believe.

The Yacht-Master looks much better than the Submariner with the supercase. Also, being dressier makes it more versatile, less utilitarian looking. It's refined and elegant for a sports watch, I like such combination of attributes . For those who don't know, the purpose of the bidirectional bezel is to track elapsed time between buoys in a regatta and also to assist with the countdown to the start of the race. All marketing, electronic alternatives are used in real life, just like diving computers and digital chronos. Who cares, in this fantasy Rolex world. They should have called it Yacht-Racer. Naming it after a licence to handle boats is all a bit pompous and prosaic. But what do I know, they're Rolex, right? By the way "Rolesium" is not an alloy but a made up word to say there are elements of steel and elements of platinum. Well in this blue dial model only the bezel is platinum. In the previous model the dial was solid platinum too. I own the platinum dial 116622, a very monochrome and handsome watch to me. Bought it new 5 years ago, was produced from 2012 till 2016. I preferred it to the blue dial when side by side at the AD, although not by much. Retail price was 11,350 euros back in the day, not cheap when the Sub 116610LN was readily available for 7,900 euros. I chose the YM hands down (at a nice discount mind you) over the supercase Sub with its slab profile and fat lugs. Compared to the Sub, here's how I see things. Take the blue pill, buy the Sub and sleep with the peace of mind you have what everybody else wants. If everyone aspires to owning one, it must be good, right? Stay in the numbing and reassuring beaten path. Take the red pill, buy the Yacht-Master and step into another dimension, a world of fine connoisseurs who can appreciate the countless subtleties and elegant sophistication of such an exquisite timepiece. Almost no one will understand it but you don't follow the herd. Instead you go your own way, free from those dictating what you should be doing, how you should be thinking. You are your own boss and need nobody's validation and pat on the shoulder. You are at the turning point separating men from boys. No offence to Sub lovers, it was all a bit tongue in cheek :-). It really is a matter of taste. I'm not a fan of the supercase and own the YM and SD43 instead. It's good to have choice. To each their own as they say..

Just got the Rhodium dial Yacht-Master- spectacular!

The submariner expands more to fit over a wet suit. They are actually designed for diving not just the office.

Love the video! I bought the 126622 in mid March this year, right before they shut it all down :-). I also chose this over the black sub and the Batgirl girl. 1 point to clarify, since I'm seeing that a lot of reviewers consistently get this wrong ( or at least present it in such a way that makes the viewer assume something that is not true). When we say that the bezel is solid platinum, what we should clarify is that the YM, just like all the other bezeled rolexes, has a bezel insert. The insert itself is solid platinum, but the coined rotating outer bezel is 904L just like all the others. If you look closely at the part where the insert meets the coined edges, you will see it. In fact, it is better this way,, since platinum is softer than steel, and it would not be practical to risk the bezel becoming deformed if God forbid you banged it against something. All in all, this watch is the at the top of the heap of all the bezeled offerings! Cheers.

I have the blue YM and the new black Sub 124060. I gotta say the YM is my favorite. The look, feel, elegance and the fitment is on another level. The Sub is a great everyday watch and is easily recognized while the YM feels sporty with more elegance. I love both watches.

I’m not a Rolex dude ( prefer Omega and Breitling ) but there’s something about this watch that makes it sooo simple yet sooo perfect. A winner

Love my Rhodium YM. Much more elegant than SM. I do wish the bezel had a lumed pip...I use the bezel to track how many drinks I've had on nights out and it's hard to see! 😁

I bought the Yachmaster last week because to me it just suited with so many occasions and looked striking.

Really nice videography and quality. My only complaint would be when you said the Submariner's bezel is for timing remaining "oxygen". It is used for timing the length of the dive itself, it's not able to calculate remaining air. You would need a pressure gauge for that.

Just got a 16623 yachtmaster, but my next watch will be the 116622 for sure! The blue is absolutely stunning

Great video but the easy link vs glide-lock was far fetched. I love my GMT Master 2 and I appreciate the easy link but I’d take the glide-lock any day if I could 👍 Its not even a fair fight between those two.

My preference is most definitely the Yacht Master 40. I love the blue dial. In fact I also prefer the Yacht Master with the black dial and bezel with a rubber strap over the Submariner.

My grail watch has always been the Sub, but when isaw the yacht in person i decided not to wait and got the yacht. i still want a sub but this is a good choice id think

I like the platinum bezel,and that strap lugs on the case curve in to meet the strap much better than what I have seen on the sub

Love my Yatchmaster 40, keep it for best, more of a dress watch. I love the blue face and red hand. Still want to get a Sub, although GMT BLNR is my next target, just as I’ve been on waiting list for two years. Would swop position for new 2020 green bezel Sub. Yatchmaster is ideal for the smaller wrist, as mine is. Can still find Yatchmaster 40 on secondhand market for retail, seems to on the move up slowly, as the more popular sports versions top out on price and maybe demand. Who wants to pay almost twice retail for Batman/Batgirl (jubilee version) when this sexy watch is obtainable.

Great vid...but you've missed the point re the easy link vs glidelock...5mm of adjustment is pointless, its either going to be super tight or too loose (if anyone's wrist expands 5mm or more then you need to see a Dr). The glidelock offers increments of 2mm, which is perfect. Admittedly, 20mm is excessive, I just assumed it was there on the Sub to fit over dive suit.

That comment about the 5mm clasp extension in the YM vs Sub Hulk's 20mm glidelock completely missed the point. The glidelock allows micro adjustments more suited for everyday use when the wrist expands. On the contrary in the YM, the clasp extension is really too much leaving most with a loose watch.

I have the bluesy sub in stealing gold and absolutely loved it and would never change it for a yacht-master beautiful though it is it's just a matter of preference

Ok, so I have 2 yacht master (rhodium dial and choclate dial) and I also have the new 41mm sub. Gotta say that your points in this video are soso being I have both I can tell you that I defintiely like the look more of the yacht master but if i had my choice i would go with the sub because of its brand recognition and difficulty to get and history of it

Bought it today dual tone rose gold choc dial 40....walked in and saw it on display and bought it straight away(Melbourne AD at watches of Switzerland )couldnt believe my luck.YM is definitely more sophisticated and classy than sub, on the wrist it feels fantastic.

The Gladlock is for superior than the quick extension easy link. And it’s also used for diving to fit over a wetsuit. You failed on this point buddy

I agree with everything except for the Easylink being better than the Glidelock system. The Glidelock is superior in every way, and can be more finely tuned to your wrist size.

Horses for courses I’m a sub fan although the YM is a nice looking watch .

The bracelet adjustment is for wet/dry suits which vary in thickness depending on conditions & depth.

My 2019 Submariner was my first Rolex. First of, I don't have the stainless steel Sub with black dial, I have a two tone bluesy, and the main reason I bought it over the Yachtmaster was the blue ceramic bezel and beautiful blue dial, together with the gold, it, to me, just is a magical combination. So the point where you say the dial on the YM is nicer than on the black Sub is true, but it is a mute one for me. The Subs bezel being unidirectional only doesn't bother me one bit, it takes maybe 1 or 2 seconds long to set it compared to the bi directional bezel, and it being a dive watch, the reason for it being unidirectional makes sense. Also, not only do I like the Subs bezel (again, in my case blue) better, but I also like the fact that it's virtually scratch proof and fade resistant. Seeing the scratches on your YM's bezel was a bit hard to look at and made me like my bezel even more. I prefer the glide lock extension over the easylink (I have a 2020 Datejust 41 so I am familiar with the easy link and find it a bit fiddly) The Glidelock has a finer adjustment, more range, and is easier to use, and the reason the range is so big is for people using their sub to go diving with a diving suit, so again, there's a functional reason why the range is so big. It's very true that the black Sub has no polished center links which can also be seen as a good thing since you won't see scratches as easily as you do on polished links, but again, that's a mute point for me since my centers are made of gold. A lot of people don't like the squarish look of the Supercase, I am not one of them, I actually love it, this is strictly personal taste. Lastly, the power reserve...newer movement, better movement, the YM wins hands down, until the next Sub will have the same movement. Sorry for the long essay, but I found myself having to "disagree" with your 5 points, mainly because I was comparing it to my own watch. Last two points, the Sub is cheaper than the YM and has a better depth rating. The Bluesy is 2 grand more than the YM but has the shiny dial, pretty and scratch proof bezel, and a dial that easily rivals the YM's....tricky to compare them all. Loved the review though and enjoyed every second of it! Keep up the good work!

A stunning watch!

I love the size, case design, polished cnetre links on the bracelet and the beautiful blue dial...but the bezel if fugley and the red seconds hand looks cheap and doesn't look serious enough. It's a shame. The Sub just ties together more nicely and is more versatile, especially the newest "41mm" version in black.

The submariner bezel isn’t only for timing Oxygens left. It’s main purpose is for timing decompression stops so divers know how long they need to wait at a certain level, so they don’t ascend to fast and get decompression sickness aka the bends.

I agree. The YM is much better looking in terms of the case shape and the combination of platinum bezel blue dial with that red seconds hand is just amazing.

The 20mm range of on-the-fly adjustment on the Submariner sounds like overkill, but the 5 mm of the Yachtmaster can be too little for some people. My watch has a total 9 mm range, and I use 5 out of the 6 positions on any given day...

I’ve seen a number of second hand Yachtmasters with platinum bezels. On a number of occasions the bezel has been marked quite visibly and is allegedly very difficult/expensive to refinish. Send it in for a service and God knows how much Rolex will charge for a replacement platinum piece. It’s a pretty watch but the high polished centre links, case and bezel would make it a nervous daily wear piece and I could see me wearing it less frequently to special occasions which would make it totally redundant in my view. That’s where the Sub steps in. The brushed surfaces and ceramic bezel means it can take a lot of wear without showing much damage and still look brand new. Sometimes watches are just a little too precious and need babying. For me the Rhodium dial is a killer look. The blue with the red highlights doesn’t work quite so well. All subjective of course. The model that’s growing on me is the cool looking rose gold two tone with the chocolate sunray dial. Warm harmonious times. I’m sure women would love that piece. Not as masculine perhaps but a pretty looking piece that you’ll virtually never see anyone else wearing. Best bit is that it’s a steal over the ugly root beer getting all the attention.

Just got the blue dial YM a month ago. YM is no match for the Sub. YM is the rich man's Sub:-))

I disagree on the clasp, the glidelock gives you much smaller steps. My experience of owning models with both these clasps. That said, in everyday use, the Omega Seamaster Professional 300m clasp beats both in terms of usability. You can adjust it with a simple press & slide of your thumb, while still having the watch loosely on your wrist.

I'll pick this over the sub any day. Why pick a ceramic bezel when you can have a precious metal platinum bezel.

The argument for the clasp was dumb, the sub can make the exact same level of adjustment as a YM and then some, so the YM isnt better than the sub there. But it is for the other categories

No, not Hulk, but actually submariner is created for (scuba) divers. And so it DOES makes sense to have an option for 20mm to extension. Because if you gonna wear a scuba neopren suit, your arm, wrist, gonna get larger and its needed a longer bracelet then. Also the bezel on the submariner specially is one directional because diver also. Thats the different between a "pilots-watch" and a divers watch. The reason why? Well wikipedia or google sure tells you

Some ridiculous reaching here. 20mm glide lock is too much flexibility? That’s like calling your boss and asking for a pay cut because all that money is too hard to spend!

Both have different purpose, a Yacht master basically is NOT a diving watch, The Sub is, plus the extension size on the Sub is for a diver to be able to wear it on the gloves, and that’s why the Yacht master is more luxurious than the Sub.
