Our 2004 Honda Odyssey runs great but the paint has seen better days. With 200,000 miles there's no sense in putting a $4000 paint job on it. We just need to stop the rust and make it all the same color again! We decided to get brave and paint it ourselves. No sprayer! No paint booth! Just some supplies from the hardware store and the Tractor Supply.
We made this video because after watching over 20 videos on KZfaq about rolling a paint job on a car... we couldn't find one that had all of the details in one place. We decided that it would be a good idea to do this ourselves and share everything we learned along the way.
Amazing results. You can do this to your own car! We are absolutely happy with the results.
Thanks for watching. Please Like the video, Share the video, Comment and be a part of the discussion. Also, please subscribe and help me build this channel.
Big Shoutout to ‪@Bushradical‬ for his quality content and adding to my general quality of life. It's good to find a likeminded individual who also believes that sometimes.... you just leave "well enough" alone.

How to paint your car with a roller

I used to roll a lot of my cars when I was younger. Used to thin the paint with kerosene since was cheaper than what you used. I also used the 9 inch rollers and brushed the hard to reach spots first. With the kero I always had a nice smooth finish. Have one car sitting at the farm that was painted 30 years ago like that and still looks ok. That one was the oxide primer. Also I used to like to do it in a tone. Like that blue you had with a gray.

These newer cars have so many contours it’s hard to use the 9” rollers. Believe me I tried. Older cars that were flatter would be awesome with a bigger roller.

Great work! James might have not enjoyed the late work and lots of hours put into this but he would cherish these memories later in life. One of my best memories with my dad were from doing a complete overhaul of the family car back in the 80s. Taking the engine out, body rust patching, prep work and painting, etc. Putting the hours in any kind of hard work brings great satisfaction when the project is done. Thank you for this video!

Great video. I’m planning on doing my truck with a roller. Saw a video of a guy who roller painted a 65 corvette, wet sanded and polished it. Looked like a professional spray job. Most of us don’t have access to spray guns and large shops. Roller paint jobs are the most convenient diy paint job which can have great results.

All the older cars till mid 80's used to be enamel painted. I had a beautiful cream color spray enamel painted and baked on in 70.s for a 1970 Chrysler Newport Custom, and that paint lasted for couple decades. I didn't keep it that long, but saw it again years after I'd sold it, and it still looked great.

Home depot also sells outdoor metal paint. It is called "Urathane Alkyd Enamel" by Behr.... Same concept as Rust-Oleum to be used for outdoor- high traffic-varying temperature - metal surfaces. Dry time is less than 40 minutes and rock solid & durable. In my humble opinion, Rust-Oleum is oil based for better coverage but remains soft and takes an eternity to dry in humid climates such a summer in Florida. Just wanted to add my 2 cents if experience to expand your horizon.

Considering that some guys paint their whole 4WD in trunk-bed liner, your van will look fine. One coworker painted an old Jeep with rattle spray cans, but actually adds up in cost, plus a whole lot of shaking and a sore finger (use a trigger handle). From a distance that van looks shiny and new. You have to get up close to see the ripples and such trolls are easy to ignore. As you say, a big advantage of solid color, no clearcoat is that future repairs are easy. I'm repainting our 1996 Plymouth Voyager mostly for free (left-over paint). The clear coat was failing, which is typical for sunny CA Central Valley, but the primer and basecoat is still well-bonded. To date I painted the roof white, using the roll & tip method as on boats. Did that before on our camping trailer, which came out smooth and looked great. I used a hard foam roller, followed close behind with a foam brush wipe to pop bubbles and paint corners. I used single stage polyurethane Interlux Brightsides white, left-over from the trailer, after their polyurethane Pre-Kote. I was surprised that after sanding, the failed clearcoat became smooth and what is left seems well-bonded, so hopefully it won't lift to shed the new paint. For the rest of the van, I'll use 1-part polyurethane automotive paint (add reducer and hardener) and spray it, in a carport booth from hung tarps. I have 3/4 gal left-over from painting our 1985 M-B. It is a light grey w/ slight blue, a currently popular color. I think will look modern with the white roof and changed to black hubcaps (only $20 Amazon rebox). To get perfectly smooth, you must wet-sand w/ 1000 to dull then buff w/ several grades of compound to perfectly shiny.

Great comment! I appreciate you adding your experience to the discussion! I was tempted to wet sand down to the 1000 grit but ultimately I think I'm gonna leave "well enough" alone on this one and count my blessings knowing it's tractor paint tough and the same color agains for the first time in almost 8 years! I was going to spray my subie, but I’ll probably roll it out.. not sure how much prep I might give it… it’s a $2,000 car.. nearly 200k on it.. Mainly the hood has gone bad.. I could do just the hood, but then it won’t match.. even going black with black.. The factory paint will definitely be different and shinier. Thanks for posting out of this video!

Good video. I've wanted to try this Rust-Oleum paint trick on my girlfriend's semi-rust bucket horse trailer. I'm only going to be able to do a few square feet at a time but I'm hoping it doesn't end up looking patchwork. Maybe once I've gone over the whole thing patchwork with one coat I can come back and put an even second or third on there. Maybe I missed something but what was the reason for choosing the tractor paint from Rustoleum over another Rust-Oleum product?
@thejoyoffixing
@thejoyoffixing Жыл бұрын
Just the fact that it’s supposedly a more durable enamel that will hold up to harsher usage and conditions! Honestly you should be able to do a horse trailer in a day! Just get rolling! Maybe hit some of the rustier parts with Rustoleum rust neutralizer. But dude… it rolls on super fast!

Yeah for the price it’s great. And I really didn’t want to use the hardener. I just wanted to straight out of bucket option, which made easy to do retouching right out of the bucket. Honestly, that stuff was so tough. I was able to scratch it with a nail a year later and not even really damage it.

@thejoyoffixing
@thejoyoffixing Жыл бұрын
We didn't use primer. But honestly, I'd go the extra mile. Hit it with spray primer, light sand on the primer, and roll away. Primer is NEVER a bad decision. I regret not using primer for this project, but it's also an experiment to see just how well this paint holds up. It has been great so far, and it's easy to touch up if you had to because you don't need to take it to a professional body work place or whip out expensive paint equipment.

@@thejoyoffixing Okay I greatly appreciate your input. Primer it is, because I already experimented with spray paint and no primer (and failed) but I live in an apartment so I was paranoid being seen spray painting on the street. I had really rushed it. The roll on looks more controlled, I can take my time and I won't get any funny looks. Plus I've liked peoples results. Thx again for your example and input.

It all comes down to sanding and polishing the paint if you want it to look show-car shiny and flat. Factory cars are shiny, but often have orange peel. They couldn't afford the cost of sanding the paint flat then buffing with compound and polishing. All most factories do is have techs make quick removal of nibs with a tiny buffer as it passes out of the paint station. Except high-end models (Bentley, Bugatti) which finish the paint like a detail shop. If you lay your paint down thick enough, you have plenty to sand flat, if you have the time. Easiest with a single color, no clear-coat. Think of the paint like a plastic, say a headlamp housing.

@thejoyoffixing
@thejoyoffixing Жыл бұрын
I actually did try the tipping technique but I didn't include it in the video. I was not using a lot of thinner and was putting it on pretty thick, as you would on a piece of farm equipment. Running the brush only left very obvious drags though what was otherwise eventually a very minimal orange peel. Because this paint is an auto-leveling epoxy the end result was very minimal orange peel. We expected there to be a bit of "texture" to the finished product, but as you can see... we were just glad to get this thing all the same color again and stop the rust. HOWEVER, I will be painting more stuff in the future and perhaps I'll try a more thinned mixture of paint which would lend itself better to the tipping and try my hand at it again. It seems like it could yield very nice results, if you're mixing correctly and looking for that much smoother finish.

Why no primer?
@thejoyoffixing
@thejoyoffixing 8 ай бұрын
Honestly, just for the sake of trying it out. This stuff is supposed to go right over Rusty metal and neutralize the metal and solve the problem. So I figured it would be worth giving it a try since the worst case scenario would be having to sand a panel and repaint it with primer. If you go to the shorter version of this video, there’s like 3000 comments and we talk a lot about all the different aspects of this job. I did mention that I would probably opt for primer as opposed to not using it just because it’s good insurance. Thanks for catching!

Look for my one year follow up video that I posted just a few months ago. It answers a few of these questions. In some situations you might want to prime in other situations you don’t need to.

Dumb question. How does the "self leveling " act on vertical surface?
@thejoyoffixing
@thejoyoffixing Жыл бұрын
Well.... it's not "self leveling" as much as it would be "self dicipating/smoothing". Like... High points eventually just spread out into the overall spread of the material. Not a dumb question. If you don't know you don't know.

Still looks as good as when we did it. I'd probably advise spray primer and light sanding before applying to any bare metal, but we have has absolutely no problem.

This reminds me of the late 1970s when I had an old beater...a 1967 Chevy pickup and painted it several times with Rustoleum with foam brushes. (It didn't come out half bad.) I had painted it so many times and colors, friends nicknamed the truck "the horse of a different color" 🙂

That paint was amazing and so durable. It is like you painted the whole car with "Rhino liner" it resisted scratches so well. (After a little body work, the T100 should be the next paint job....maybe in a satin or flat khaki color. :-)) Thanks for the update.

Oooh khaki t100. I hadn’t even considered that. I’ve always wanted a black one. And the paint is in mostly good condition but I thought about painting everything down low with the tractor paint kind of like rhino guard. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it yet.

Automatic car washes ruon paint I watched as my mother took her new car a Subaru to the car wash each week. Religiously she bought a lifetime car wash membership . It took 3 years for the cleatrcot to fail on top hood trunk lid also the corners where the tops met the sides . Where the top brushes on the carwash met the paint . The clear bra appears to really protect the paint by not allowing the paint to chip and thus saved the entire hoof on another car the bra was severely cracked but no clear coat was lost until the roof at the windshield back . Brushless only car washes seem to extend the life of the paint .
