The Audis Quattro Drive works mechanically via a Trosendifferential. For this thing to operate as intended you need more resistance on the spinning wheels. But those Rollers weren't giving enough resistance. For Situations like this Audi relies on the traction control system. But as robbyjai pointed it out it was turned off. So this is far from any real World conditions...

when they tested BMW, did you notice the rear wheel was intentionally misligned (not parrell to the platform, therefore it created extra force. The guy stood infront of the rear wheel while testing to cover it up..

It appears the rear passenger side roller placement wasn't centered on the BMW, thereby giving BMW an advantage. I drive a 2012 BMW X3 and I love it, but this test is questionable.

the trick is the rollers in the bmw case were a little bit angled, so it basses easily

Notice how the back right roller on the BMW test is positioned off center so the wheel gets more traction, the old guy sees that and steps in front of the camera to hide it.

There is nothing unfair with the test. Different systems offer different methods. Each method has a capability and limitation. For example, some consider the xDrive system to be a little sluggish in reaction versus some other designs. However, it also very readily produces 4 wheel spin without playing around with the ABS system like other systems which promotes forward movement in conditions like this. There are tradeoffs in everything. Across many tests/reviews xDrive is consistently good

the funny thing is that bmw driver pushed the gas pedal hard to the floor but the audi and mercedes drivers were really careful with it. wow nice sales trick from bmw

It's real. The X-drive scheme has not a central differential, but a clutch system that constantly sends torque to both axles. It's always partially locked and this explains the reactivity of the system. The bad thing is that this affect the fuel economy...

It matters how much throttle is applied to each car... More throtte=more torque can be shifted...

i wonder if the q5 has limited slip in the front axle but not the rear axle, and what if the left front roller is positioned on the left rear wheel.

I drive a 2011 Mercedes-benz Glk 350, and i have to say it works very well off road, on ice and muddy conditions. It is by far one of the best small suv's for the price, beating out the x3 for sure.

There's nothing wrong with any of their AWD systems in my opinion. Although M-B's non-AMG awd setup could be better. This video is biased and set up by some arrogant BMW reps

I wouldn't worry about who's system performed better in a test like this. Its not like I'm going off road or driving in 5 feet of snow or mud. Any of the mini SUV's on this vid should be able to handle moderate snow. If the snow is too deep, keep your ass in your house, period. All of the brands presented have fantastic all wheel drive technology.

The only real life situation where this applies is when you have both rear wheels off the ground in suspension. Try back the X3/X5 off a cliff, hang your car just enough that both rear wheels drop off the cliff with rear part of wheelbase floor sitting on the edge of the cliff and front wheel sitting on the ground. Now try if your Xdrive can pull the car off the cliff. I wish BMW stop making this kind of stunt show.

@TheIrishDragoon It's not a "stunt". Firstly, BMW doesn't even claim that it's X series is designed for off-roading. It serves it's purpose showing which AWD drive system is superior in dealing with and overcoming traction loss and wheel spin. Any who whatever hater will be hater, fan boys will be fan boys. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

@paulsax42 This isn't to see which is the best 4x4 in the world. It's a test to show which luxury brand has the best continuos AWD. Furthermore BMW doesn't even begin to claim that they have a superior off road vehicle. Rather that the BMW does have a good continuos AWD system that out performs it's said competitors in the said market.

This test is rigged. Watch the roller being put on BMW rear passenger wheel. It's placed offset to the side so that the ridge of the roller cage provides traction to that tire, i.e. the tire was not completely resting on the roller. And then the guy strategically blocks the view of that wheel, whereas for the Audi feed they not only show all wheels, but also change the camera angle to "document its demise to the fullest." Also as another user mentioned, we don't know if they messed with other cars' traction controls. This is obviously a BMW sponsored test, and they won't let their car lose. Great acting, but not good science. Shame on these people. I wonder if BMW feels VERY threatened by Audi's recent advances in design and style. Let the fully discerning minds not be swayed by internet "facts" such as this video.

A german program has already proven this wrong. If you use a lot if gas and have the Audi in normal mode it lose. But if you do a fair test you do as the BMW and put it in off-road mode and drive a bit more gently. The BMW and Audi systems are different but the Audi's is better off-road. Not a fair test.

xDrive is based on multiple technical sensors always sending information on where there is most traction. It is highly advanced and the axles is constant receiving information about the surface. Because of this, the clutch in the diffs are being used a lot. When it becomes to slippery the clutch will be overheated and the computer will shut out the 4x4. Then the car becomes a 2 wheel drive. quattro on the other hand is a mechanical 4x4 and it means that the diffs, not the computer, decide where the power is sent. It can not be overheated and it is a constant 4x4. On the video I comment in first place the diff in the Q5 is obviously disconnected by the beloved beamer costumers. That's how it works. I have never changed the subject. I dont send 10 ) in each comment. And I would rather be a honest fanboy of Audi, then a manipulated fangirl of BMW.

you are right about the system that's how it works but i trust more in a computer witch can be easy to optemise or change then an mechanical one witch is classic and old, xDrive has been improved for the last yers but quattro has been remaning in most parts the same , i don/t say quattro is bad 4x4 system , but i prefer xDrive (sorry for my english)

The test was not fair for the Audi, the driver in the Audi was pressing the gas much more than the BMW. The Audi has a far better control system.

All three systems are crap in a test like this, notice how the front wheel of a BMW is steered of the rollers and hits the roller support while spinning 2:19 what causes it to take of.

Je suppose que ce concessionnaire veut faire sous-entendre à la clientèle de ce supermarché est que: même s'il n'y a qu'une roue qui a de l'adhérence, la BMW est propulsée par cette roue unique contrairement aux autres 4x4. Si c'est vrai, est-ce un bien? Non, car un véhicule dont 3 roues n'ont aucune adhérence ne doit pas être propulsé par une seule roue (excepté lorsque les roues du véhicule se trouvent dans des ornières solides capables leurs caps ou quelque chose qui les guide) .

thats why i hate other brands...they are putting a non fair videos against others,this is a BMW x drive demonstration,off course theyll make the BMW to be better,let all of them get a very good drivers and let each of them to be a fan of one of the 3 marks ,and put them on SNOW,MUD and RAIN to see wich one will handle best.I prefer the 4matic,not because im a BENZ fan,just because its technology is better designed to handle in SNOW and others,ill be so laughing at the BMX fail,MB-best or nothing

please tell me you guys all seen the rollers being moved for every car? isn't it weird that the man moving them is manipulating the macanism of those roller? looks like he blocked the roller for the bmw and unlocked them for the benz and audi... plus, i bet esp was not activated on the audi. the quattro system can send up to 100% of its power to one single wheel if needed. oh and this test was made by bmw haha.. this is a big reason why i hate bmw so much, they are always trying to shit on benz and audi in there advert. never you will see someone say his audi is bad in winter but i've seen alot of bmw drivers saying there xdrive bmw felt flumsy.

This is not the real quattro because the Q5 uses haldex and not torsen diffs..... Quattro is just a marketing gimmic nothing else... This is not the first video that shows a Q5 stuck on rollers :D But anyway Bmw FTW!

@TheIrishDragoon and it pisses me off to see this because I'm a BMW fan. why can't someone just show a proper and fair test on snow? it's ridiculous that i've never found one out of all the reviews of awd on youtube. is it really that hard to get all the vehicles together wearing the same rubber and not cheating by switching off traction on the merc or audi?? I'm mad because it completely discredits the BMW which does very well anyways!

I used to be impressed by the videos but not anymore after only for four years now, after only 27k miles water pump failed and many other things as well long the way . When I went back to BMW be replaced it with refurbished what a pump and $1600 later.It turns out that the water pump in the BMW X fives are made of plastic.
