Before everything in America shut down, I got the chance to talk to multiple time world champion Thorsten Hohmann about his thought process while playing straight pool. Unlike 9-ball or 8-ball, straight pool (a.k.a. 14.1) allows you to hit any ball in any order, and when you get down to just 1 ball, you rack the other 14 back in the triangle and keep going. Thorsten has made a terrifying 408 without missing, so I figured he was a good person to get a straight pool lesson from. Filmed at Society Billiards in New York City.
Also, check out Cue Lab! Thorsten developed an app that makes table diagramming easy. You can create drills, send setups, and more: / cuelab.co

dude: that's like 101 of straight pool strategy, not a biggie.... break shot -> then first tought: is there already a suitable break ball that I need to leave alone and develop something around it. What really get's me in straight pool are not the clusters, not the problem balls, but more like the last 5-6 ball before the break, where you kinda know: you don't really have option anymore and you have to make a solid plan and find the easiest pattern..... that one really get to my flow....

I had the pleasure of speaking with Hohmann to an Eurotuor, after a short time since his victory at the 9-ball world championship in 2003, he is a really nice person, I asked to sign my vollmer cue in cocobolo, and he asked me if I preferred the white marker and he went to his car to get it, he is the best! Too bad that the signature over time has gone away, but has left me a good memory.

This was a nice rack for demonstrating how 14.1 usually is... mostly planned shots, but there's always 2 or 3 problems. Like no break ball, a touchy angle where you might crash into the break ball and ruin it, or having to shoot a ball into a more distant pocket than you wanted. Guys like thorsten just deal with these little issues instead of letting them ruin the run.

@@josephyard7328 hell yess!! - it's dirt resistant, ding resistant, even fairly scratch resistant - you can pretty much violate it however you want, move balls around the table with it, let balls hit it, hitting it on the table due to frustration after missed shot - -> noting happens, it basically stays as new forever.... as for the dirt resistance: not every carbon is equally well, it depends on their finish - Revo for instance, somehow dirt can accumulate on it - it's fine thou, since it's carbon fibre, it's only on the surface and can't penetrate into the shaft, so you can just simply wipe it away with a wet towel and shaft is like new - - - nevertheless, my Mezz Ignite, the finish is superb, a lot better than Revo and also better than Meucci, nothing sticks to it.... I basically just never have to clean my shaft, it's always super slick, like new... maybe every month or so I'll go with a wet towel or with glass wipes to clean it and mostly only if I get sloppy and let it sit around and accumulate dust, not putting it in my case, haha. Other than that: it basically stays clean forever..... or dirties only very minimal.... and all dirt can be removed in 2 secs. On the other hand, with my wood shafts, I was always polishing and burnishing them, since I want that ultra slick feel. And no matter how good you polish your shaft, how fine you sand it, how good the wax coating is you apply: it will get dirty again after some time. And then you need to do maintainance again. Carbon fibre on the other hand: it really is a zero maintanance shaft.
@enricokohler475
@enricokohler475 4 жыл бұрын
@@josephyard7328 I bought my carbon fibre for: - no maintainance (really: close to ZERO) - no dings - no scratches - plays the same way independent of weather and temperature - will never bend that's the hard benefits of (nearly) ever carbon shaft. That will set it apart from wood for sure! - - - other things are just preferecial and added boni, like the low deflection, high energy transfer, more "linear" feedback progression between very soft, hard, powershots

Dear Ronnie, Thank you for this professional insight on straight pool. I've had the privilege of seeing Thorsten play live in Vegas and he is phenomenal. I enjoy your material and partnerships with today's professional players. I'm a big fan of SVB and his approach on the table in tournament play, practice play, & even money games. In my opinion, he is the best in the world. Even though it may not be easy with his busy schedule, I would appreciate if you can partner with him to get a better understanding on his approach at the table. I think that it will inspire me and others to continue to work hard just as he does in efforts to reach excellence that pays off. Thank you in advance and keep doing what you do. 👍

This is straight pool, when you get down to the last ball you rack up 14 more and break them open with the last remaining ball from the previous rack. You keep on running balls until you miss. World record is 626 by John Schmidt last year finally beating willie mosconi’s record of 526 that was set in 1954.

What sort of game was that they playing where Thorsten played the 4 ball into the rack and they called it a break?. Was it from previous racks and how many balls in succession can play?. It would have been good to know this pretty handy. The video is useless as tutorial because its just a practise knock about where you will more likely than not have shape on a ball........
@keithkruger7270
@keithkruger7270 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it would be from a previous rack with the idea being that you leave the last ball and use it to open the next rack. The opening break in straight pool is typically a safety shot because ALL balls pocketed must be CALLED shots, so an open break isn't used. Thorsten was demonstrating a typical straight pool "break shot". it's a great game. google the strategy. John Schmidt just recently broke the record for most consecutive balls pocketed at 626 (over 44 racks!)
@swstein
@swstein 4 жыл бұрын
They are playing straight pool. In straight pool you can make any ball. The break shot is a safety shot as every ball must be called Ball and pocket. So no just smashing them. The rack will only be opened if a player can make a ball and go into the rack off that made ball. When you are down to one ball left, the remaining balls are re- racked minus that single ball This means you need to leave position on your last ball to reopen the rack again. High level straight pool players will make breaks in the two three hundred range.

How's that even remotely clickbait, he's a pool world champion, more specific would be 3x world champion. Even more specific, wouldn't fit in the title. Whether it's 9, 8, 10, snooker, 3 rail, bank, masse, it's really all the same when you get to that level.

"multiple world champion" is specific enough if it's about pool -> Thorsten has won the WPA 9-Ball World Championship two times, he also won the 14.1 World Championship on one occasion when it was sanctioned by the WPA and on 4 more occasions after the WPA stopped sanctioning the 14.1 World Championships. His Achievements are too much to fit into the title, bro... But yeah: he could have written "multiple 14.1 world champion", which would be actually helpful since this is a video on 14.1
