Rolling huts: metal-clad tiny wheeled homes move on a meadow

When Michal Friedrich bought an old farm-turned-RV-park in Washington State’s Methow Valley, he wanted to restore the floodplain meadow while leaving it open to guests. He called on Seattle architect Tom Kundig, known for his mechanized homes often reliant on archaic pulleys, cranks and levers, to construct alternative mobile cabins (alternative RV park).
The six “rolling huts”- steel clad boxes on steel wheels- have never actually rolled (they were built on-site by local contractors), but they fit the legal definition of “mobile” and the site’s zoning as an RV park. Each tiny, elevated cabin is left as raw as possible with an all-plywood interior - including plywood furniture that can be reconfigured from benches and stools to coffee table to a bed.
The 200-square-foot floating huts (each a nightly rental) are electrified, but not plumbed so each comes with a composting toilet (and access to the bunkhouse with more toilets and showers) and a bucket for gathering water from the hand pump directly below.
The Rolling Huts were inspired by Kundig’s “Delta Shelter”, the home the architect designed on the same property for Friedrich and his family. Also a steel box on stilts, this one has metal shutters close up the entire house via a crank mechanism comprised of gears and pulleys. A hand-powered crank, like a ship’s wheel, moves all four shutters at once to close up the home (even during a power outage).

The simplicity of the tiny houses exudes a certain serenity and harmony with the surroundings. Reminds us of a younger version of ourselves when things seemed so much simpler.

What I really like about Kirsten's videos is that often her entire family will stay in a location, giving us a better, more realistic image of how the place could accommodate a family with children.

baudellio charles hahaha I know right. Must be transportable, add on wheels. ✔️ Although the loophole seems to put everything at ease. What happens when or if they must move. It's happened in the past. I need to watch it over again. As for who owns the land. But at times there have been instances where someone either wants access or possibly federal government wants access, such as adding in a road/byway. Even in the oddest areas. Really cut throat oh no 🤦🏻‍♀️what just happened... they want to what!?! If it's leased land your at someone else's mercy. And as mentioned about the government... "The power of eminent domain allows the government to take private land for public purposes only if the government provides fair compensation to the property owner. The process through which the government acquires private property for public benefit is known as condemnation." The reason for a stipulation for a home to be mobile leads me to the fine print and logic, that one day someone may tell you to move the Mobile home. That in itself would make me leery of not being able to truly move those homes. But then again. Take the wood down and take them apart... would be the simples logical move. Just like they were built they can be taken apart. So the materials use where ingenious! 💆🏻 What a gorgeous area!!! And it's great they are raised for caution against flooding within the low area they are in. I'd love to stay there!

baudellio charles so I read the area is a flood plain and they had to have wheels to be mobile for the insurance. I was thinking 💭 hmmm, I hope they have enough height. I'll tell yah, there have been some storms lately that are dripping months of rain in the matter of hours. I lived in Florida for 19 years and some of the older stilt homes where oddly higher in height. And never have flood issues when we flood. Oh my my. This one home, my best friends parents had built a beautiful home raised and stucko look but he mad a lower garage that swooped around the home and went under the house. Oh her parents had 2 flooded vehicle'a because of the way he built it. And walled it in.

another reason - "mobile" homes are also taxed differently. if they had no wheels or no ability to be moved, they would be taxed as a permanent structures. Don't know about WA, but in NJ they would probably pay 10X in property taxes. According to Zillow, property is 22 acres and is only taxed at $4838 per year! (2017)

I really like the patina that bare steel takes on. I bought a Caboose and rail to do something similar on a lot my parents own and have been pleased with the results. It is in a high risk fire area so the steel offers more protection than a wood structure. Advances in LED lighting and solar power have made it much easier to live off grid.

Live about 1 hour from these. Had no idea. You see the juxtaposition of modern/nature a lot in the Seattle area. Also, keep in mind the materials used are reclaimed. Reused sometimes looks rough, but it’s good for the environment.

Basic enginuity. Imagine if this blueprint was used in say....earthquake zones, or hurricane areas? The beaches? I know that the same rusty steal look is used on some bridges in the town on the East Coast of North Carolina where I used to live. When first built i thought "how silly...it'll eventually rust through if they don't paint it!" But apparently the oxidation ends up PROTECTING it and it NEVER has to be painted. It's kinda brilliant. As low maintenance as you can get. As far as I can tell it'll last centuries...literally! 😊♥
