I’m a blue belt girl who has been doing jiu jitsu for a bit more than a year. The gym that I train at only has a few girls who train regularly. If it’s not for the guys who constantly train with and help me, there’s no way I can be where I’m now. I’m forever grateful for them and I can say I’ve never felt uncomfortable at the gym. I don’t feel like a “female” as much as I feel like a “smaller person” and the guys roll with me just like they would with any other smaller guys.

Always appreciate hearing from the lady-rollers. I don't find it strange, either. Some of the girls at my school can kick my butt soo....yeah..I guess that makes me feel strange. Side note: Some of the best BJJ techniques I've learned have been from higher belts - that were women. They do a great job that teaching small techniques (hidden BJJ) that help defend against bigger opponents...appreciate the comment. Consider subbing if you haven't would be awesome to get your thoughts/perspective on other videos. 🙏👋🤛🤙

It's only weird, if you make it weird. Rolling with women should get you focusing on being more technical, not trying to muscle technique. Muscling is a determinant to building your jiu-jitsu skill set and means you don't have an intelligent answer to the problem someone has given you.

My wife trained in BJJ for 8 months and has taken a break. That being said, she has no problem with me rolling with other women. I believe that we are a community and should roll with women; who are part of the community. Concerning being above reproach; rolling with a woman during class with your coach/professor present, I believe, is above reproach. Rolling by yourselves, no gi; not!

as far as the no gi by yourselves situation....thats highly unlikely because no one would be in class with just two people anyway. unless its coach and student, like a private lesson. not the greatest idea because men , we are perverted as fuck hahaah but i dont believe its a NOT! scenario. thats just me though

We definitely believe rolling with a woman is a personal choice. However, we also believe as one progresses in Jiu Jitsu there is a level of professionalism that is maintained between practitioners.

It’s not a choice, I think it’s not polite to refuse the roll just bc she is a woman. She is there to practice, and as you all know they are few. You don’t “punish” the few that won’t to roll by saying “I don’t rolle with woman” for me that is completely sexist. Roll with everybody man, woman, kid, old, new, with color, transparent, 1 arm, 1 leg, etc. I rolled with a guy that was paralise from the waistline down... it was very nice learned some sneaky wrist locks that prove to be very helpful with other.

Adriano Jordão So should women not have a choice and be forced to roll with men and if they don’t want to?

Fascinating topic. I think it will come down to the culture of the country you're in. Here in Shanghai there's about a third female practitioners at the academy and I swear nobody even bats an eyelid at gender. Not only is there no "I'm not gonna roll with her because she's a woman and I'm a man" thing but I think that would be unacceptable and kinda weird for the culture of the academy. Nobody would dare. When you get on the mats it's about jiujitsu - race, gender, career, politics, religion etc. none of that means a thing. That's something which is really attractive for me about jiujitsu. Recently we've had a female black belt join the teaching staff from abroad. She had been teaching in an Arab country before and she specialises in teaching women. When asked about woman's classes, the head coach at our academy said "women become better at jiujitsu when they roll with anyone, men included" and I think that's a solid point. Rolling with 'anyone' prepares you for reality. Choosing your opponents strays from the very heart of what make bjj so brilliant. You begin all disembodied and hung up about rolling with other humans (like the "is it gay to roll with men?" thought) but you end up humbled, more comfortable in your body and less of a prude.

I am an whitebelt female bjj gi and no gi practitioner and I prefer rolling with males. Can't stand it when a coach makes me practise with the "other girl" unless she is a higher belt than me. Maybe some of the white belt girls just don't continue cause its not really their sport. Also I don't roll with guys who I feel are really uncomfortable with rolling with a girl. U just feel it. I always wear high closed tshirts...I prefer guys with shirts too especially when they got that chest hair 😆. 99% of the guys I feel fine with.

I roll with every body. But I adjust my strength accordingly, and if is a kid, I sand bag a bit. I appreciate that larger guys adjust there strength to me too. It’s training not a fight. The only “type of jiujiteiro” I some times am a little afraid to roll with is a big very fresh (1 day 2 days) white belt. Some times they panic and you can get slammed or even hit by erratic movements. Be careful with fresh big withe belts.
@pkraus02
@pkraus02 3 жыл бұрын
I'm exactly the same however I would say white belts in general are risky. I'm a one stripe white belt and roll mostly with white belts. I get scratches, bruises, etc every time I roll and accept that it's part of the sport. I roll with everyone at the same intensity they come at me. If a woman comes 100% and is strong I give her the same. If she's 90lbs and doesn't have a lot of strength I'll flow roll with her so we both can learn. I'm not interested in dominating anyone with my strength and size. I just want to learn and improve.

Adriano Jordão I think it is reasonable to have a healthy fear of brand new big white belts, but these same dangers they present often give you the best indication of how your game will look in a self defense scenario. Are you able to protect yourself, and especially your face and head while controlling their posture and flailing limbs? Don't overlook the little guys either. When they move it seems like knees and elbows are flying everywhere, but mostly toward your face. I know that my own game improves for the better when I tighten up these self defense basics.

40 year old women here that is getting ready to take my first class. I never looked at it being an issue with the men and women thing. I'm purely taking classes to work with men bigger and stronger than I am so I can learn how to better handle a situation. Everyone has their own hang ups for sure. As long as people in general arnt dicks then it's all good . Loving your videos!

I roll with everyone at my gym, i don't even think bout it wether its a teen or a female and both. To myself i see it disrespectful if i deny a request when someone asks me to spar with em, unless one of instructors tell me not to because I need more training for competition to spar ppl closer to my weight. At the end its a good opportunity i should relay on my technique more not my gorilla strength

It's a personal choice. My issue is when ppl lack the discretion to tell the difference between a personal conviction & a corporate truth. Not everyone is a sexual deviant just bc you're obsessed with the topic. I say hold your personal convictions while respecting the boundaries of others. That's being above reproach.
@midlifebjj

@@midlifebjj There are guys who just obsessively swear every guy is obsessed with sex like some mindless animal. Many are all about the beauty, flow, & camaraderie of bjj. There's no controversy. You either do or you don't. Some are gender neutral with rolling, some don't discriminate. It's a personal choice that should be left up to the individual. If two ppl have rolling sessions, what does that have to do with you? Thus my point, discretion is knowing the difference between a personal conviction & a corporate truth. Some truths are absolute, some are personal truths. To each their own. Respecting boundaries is still a virtue. That's my point.
