This was a wonderful interview. Jack has become such a boon to watchbox. The best watch interviewer there is. And to my embarrassment I hadn’t heard of this brand and this gentleman’s timepieces. This serves as a reminder of how interesting, absorbing and beautiful the world of watches and watch making really is. Many Thanks indeed/merci beaucoup Jack/Monsieur Gauthier

Romain seems like such a wonderful human being. His watches are amazing, wonderfully finished and very refreshing in terms of design. If only I could afford one!

I enjoy the fact that his office is full of KAWS vinyl figures too.

I thought that too! Plus a Basquiat’type art painting that is clearly 2 sizes too big for the space. Love it!

What a video, absolutely loved it. Being a product design engineer working for a blue chip, global tech brand, this is a working environment I can only dream of. A truly inspirational work ethic from an amazing company. Bravo!

Thank you. These interviews help us understand the person behind the art. I liked the analogy of Michelangelo and how Romain Gauthier's process of watchmaking is making visible the hidden inner beauty of the material being worked with. I hope one day to be able to see how this beauty is revealed.

A dynamic hybrid of a watchmaker. Truly unique as a antique when it comes to his journey. Proof you can't take the hood out of the homie. Keep thriving, Mr. Gauthier. Your vision is on point and essential.

Great interview. Fascinating to hear such a detail-oriented watchmaker talk about the craft from his perspective at such a high level. I think anyone who's seen a Romain Gauthier that understands watchmaking will recognize they are seeing something truly special and its clear where that direction is coming from. Thanks.

I love that Jack points out that even as the popularity of watches has grown, the knowledge of hand finishing hasn't. It's so true and sad. People will even buy a Patek and not know what is hand finished vs machine finished. Some will even buy a Rolex thinking it is hand finished. Even worse, some people don't care. What is the point of a hobby if not enjoying the process of education and discovery?

What an excellent t interview and the questions were certainly well conceived ahead of time it seems. Made a coffee and really took the time to absorb what was being said.

I'm dying to know how Romain Gaulthier thought of making the flat snail cam, and why didn't Breguet or anyone else think of that in the 1700s? Did they not have the mathematical computing power, or the materials, or some other technical necessity, or did they just not think of it? Jack, if only you'd told me you were to the Vallée de Joux last fall, I would have given you this question to ask. 😉

Be sure to have a sauna and jump in the lake at the Bains des Paquis in Geneva, followed by a fondue or, healthier, a thick vegetable soup with cheese and bread.

What's the definition of an interviewer thats only there to read off his questions with out contributing to the interview for it to have nice flow. The answer is this guy. He comes across like he's not even listening other then the odd "right right" "yup hummm" then just slapes a question out with no lead into it.
