In part five of this series we return to Roman Egypt, and explore syncretic Roano-Egyptian religious cultus like the Cult of Isis, Serapis, and Horus. We also take a brief look at mummies and the famous Fayum portraits and what they can tell us about ancient conceptions of ethnicity.

I would be interested to learn what data and techniques modern historians use to determine the distribution of skin color and other physical traits among ancient populations.

I’m not sure, actually. As far I know there isn’t a study of where all the early temples were constructed, but I could be wrong

@@TheFallofRome i only ask cause when norwegian sailors work in the dock in the 19th ce in my home town swansea, had there own norwegian church built on the dock. Because sailors and dock workers wouldnt worship in local churches.. not entirly parralel but it seem you have religeous places bult close to were you work and as popularity and they become a fad you end up with vatican city. I know thats a skydiving leap in logic. but human behaviour hasnt change that much.

For much of history religion was a major, if not the major, component of a person’s identity. When the prevalence of hybrid Egyptian religions is combined with the exoticness of Egypt in the Roman psyche, it forms a core facet of Egyptian identity during the Roman period. The same goes for Judaism and Christianity

@@Gustav_Kuriga yes, it does. Religion is one of the major themes which show up in Greco-Roman sources when they discuss different peoples, so having some understanding of different religions and faiths is crucial for actually trying to comprehend how ethnicity was understood in the Roman Empire

Religion is a HUGE part of ethnicities, and how they are perceived. For instance, look at the images and descriptions various people(especially in the West) conjure up when talking about "Muslims", even though they consist of multiple groups of people around the world with various different rituals, beliefs etc.

@@Gustav_Kuriga The pre rome is merged with the pagan western hyperborean atlantian scandiavian norse people, along with the pagan indo aryans.. the original rome ethnicy is indo aryan and nordic, even western albino type too.. and later rome decided to multi ethnic with conqurering the east, that is allow the mixture with the western genetics and two genetics are also merged but some aryans and nordic ethnics stay remain ethnic and don't wanted to mix.. the eastern roman empire part is couse the collapse of the pagan roman empire couse of multi ethnicity with the none aryans and none nordics
