I colorized, restored and created a sound design for this video of Rome, Italy 1940, we can see what happens during the day by showing the places of interest in Rome in the early 40s
Video Restoration Process:

✔ Colorized only for the ambiance (not historically accurate)

@@themaskedman221 Why? do you think that 2000 years ago the Romans defined themselves as the ancients who lived in the year zero? or that those who lived 1500 years ago were considered medieval? Or the Baroque? the renaissance is a term that has been used by historians to define a historical period full of innovations, probably soon historians will use a similar term to define these last 50 years of revolution in your silicon valley when everything will end. they called it renaissance ( reborn ) because for 1000 years humans have not been able to build things like those of ancient rome, the knowledge and technology had been lost. the phantheon is still standing today after 2000 years (it never collapsed) but only in 1400 someone managed to build a dome of that size (santa maria del fiore), hence the term renaissance, what had been lost had been recovered, it was a new beginning.

@@stefanoballiero8319 "Historians" use no such term my friend. Not on the 15th & 16th Century. The terms are "Late Medieval" and "Early Modern Period". The "Renaissance" is a myth.

I would not call a city which is probably not older than 600 years “eternal”. In particular since most of the buildings which can be seen in this picture are certainly only 100-300 years old.

It bc was amazing how much I recognized given the 80 years passed. It’s a lot more restricted, understandably for preservation, now. The Forum gets more fenced off every time I visit, for example. In 2005 you could walk under the arch by the Coliseum and as you pass into the Forum itself. Both are fenced now. You could climb the tower in Trajans Forum. You could walk through part of the Roman Forum at night- a truly incredible experience I’m glad I had. However they find new things every year and Rome remains one of the world’s architectural and artistic treasures.

Ernea I never understand why people go to Rome in summer. It’s uncomfortable in heat and crowds. And it’s twice the price for everything. In October the weather is cool but reasonable, crowds are much lower and the prices are lower, as in spring up to about April. While Christmas Eve at midnight every bell from hundreds of churches welcome Christmas with a good minute of joyous sound, it’s otherwise not my favorite Christmas destination. That said, tourists are lazy. Everywhere. While they’re sleeping in and looking for an American breakfast at their overpriced hotel, hitting the streets is pleasant in Rome or Paris or Prague or…. I only once encountered unpleasant crowds at the Trevi because I go at night after eating dinner or before 10 AM. Any time after 7 PM a walker has much of the city to themselves. It’s frankly magical.

Rome as it is today is largely a result of the Renaissance and Mussolini. The layering of ancient to more modern is fascinating. It will always be my favorite city in Earth. There is a lot remaining of Ancient Rome both immediately and when one goes into basements and under churches etc. bBit the ground level is between 15 and 25 feet above Rome before it fell. (Look at the Pantheon. It had a series of 8 steps to get from ground level to the portico. Walking behind it you can glance down. into original ground level, easily 12-15 feet from modern road you are standing on. ) And Both and the street layout are either built on top of or replacing Roman with Renaissance. Until you get to the Forum area where Mussolini carved a massive swath out of Ancient Rome to build a modern 4 lane road and the eyesore that is the Piazza Venezia and Alter of the Fatherland. Granted Roman’s did know enough to build their modern business and banking center outside the historic heart., as did Paris. Thank God. Not complaining. Rome is beautiful, engaging, cheerfully chaotic and filled with millennia of cultural treasures.

Around about the time that Italy entered WW2 but Rome as a city was mostly spared any damage mostly because it was the seat of the Vatican and its historical architecture afforded it extra protection that even the allies weren't willing to bomb such a majestic place

Some notations on the dating of the documentary. As noted in a previous comment, the aerial images show the lack of Via della Conciliazione (designed by fascism to celebrate the end of the "Roman question", i.e. the conflict between state and church, obtained with the wicked "Lateran Pacts" of 1929). Thus it was decided to demolish the ancient medieval district to open a connection between the Tiber and Bernini's square. The demolition of the "Spina di Borgo" (which is still visible at the end of the doc) precisely begins on 29 October 1936 (with a pickaxe by the megalomaniac from Predappio taken up by the LUCE institute). Therefore, there would have been 10 months to shoot, which however are mostly visibly summer (brigade uniforms, sailors in white, short sleeves, tourists at the Trevi fountain, the child's ice cream, etc.), also if in San Pietro coats can be seen in the sequence of sellers of palms (?) lilies (?), then they would appear to be earlier, perhaps March-April. Regarding the presence of the FIAT 500, it must be remembered that the car (known as the "Topolino") was presented to the press in a regime propaganda show at Villa Torlonia on 10 June 1936 (and the car was marketed 5 days later). In the documentary we see several Topolinos that seem to testify to a "success" in sales, obviously in relation to the micro-market of the time. In fact, in the miserable (autarkic) Italietta of 1936, there were just over 200,000 motor vehicles (including cars and trucks, public and military transport) circulating, or one for every 200 inhabitants; ten times less than France and forty times less than the USA. Therefore, considering that we are in Rome (where the probability of buyers with economic possibilities is much higher than elsewhere) and the images show the streets of the historical centre, it is possible that we notice several Mickey Mouse, although this one has only recently been around (it cost almost 9,000 lire, well over the 5,000, the price the dictatorship asked Agnelli for a popular car, moreover unsuitable - with only two seats - for average families of 2 or 3 children, resulting in the end almost like a luxury utility vehicle) . The dating of the documentary, including the aerial shots, is plausible between July and September 1936. Otherwise, given that the final view from above is certainly prior to October 36, the images could also have been shot in the following spring-summers (37 -40); it should be remembered that on June 10, 1940, the Megalomaniac throws the country into definitive catastrophe; I would therefore exclude '41 (it does not seem like a warlike climate as seen in other Luce documents from that period) and certainly 42 must be eliminated altogether- 43, because in Piazza Venezia there was a "war garden" (cultivated with wheat), as well as the following period with Rome occupied by the Nazis. ---

Actually at least some of the footage must be earlier than 1940. At min 7:45 from the aerial view you can clearly see that the construction for via della Conciliazione - leading from river Tiber to St Peter - hasn’t started yet and it started oct 1936.

I've been to Rome a couple of times and nothing seems to change, the police man on traffic duty was typically Italian , ( grand gestures ) but the drivers didn't appear to take a blind bit of notice of him 😂, it's a great city .

The city was much cleaner and the pavement was way better than now. Other than that, excluding cars and people's clothes, it's all the same like now

This was primarily filmed on Tuesday 2nd April 1940 between 09:30am and 13:56pm.

@@ronald3836 It's very clear from the cloud formations. They were very distinct cloud formations on that day, as recorded in my grandfather's notebook: "Cloud Formation and Times of Day". He spent his days in Rome studying cloud formations and he left me his notebook in his will. I can never replace my grandfather, but I am carrying on his work today, noting the cloud formations (and the time on the clock) as they drift on by my mountain hut.

Has anybody noticed that you don't see the buzzillion tourists on the street like you do today ? I realise it was wartime, but even so, people didn't travel like we do today. In those days, even the language was much more localised than it is today. I know this because my parents migrated from Italy to Australia & they brought their Venetian Dialect with them. In fact, the Venetian Dialect is more at home in Australia nowadays, than in the Veneto region ! .... A request to NASS --> It would be great if you can scrounge some footage from INSIDE the Colosseum. My understanding is that it looked very different decades ago, compared to today. At one point in the recent past, the Hypogeum (the basement) was completely filled with dirt. I saw a late 1800's, early 1900's picture of it

im Italian and I am so happy that Rome did not had the history of warsaw, been there and the city was literally burn to the ground, they managed to rebuilt only the main square that's all, everything else is made from steel and glass.. One interrsting thing the piazza del popolo at 5:47 was built 50 years before, is crazy to see how the marble is more white! thats so increddible, also never knew that un the cupola of saint peter they used real candles that's crazy!
