Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet (Claire Danes) exchange vows and find it hard to say goodnight.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The classic Shakespearean romantic tragedy is updated by director Baz Luhrmann to a post-modern Verona Beach where swords are merely a brand of gun and bored youths are easily spurred toward violence. Longtime rivals in religion and business, the Montagues and the Capulets share a page from the Jets and Sharks of West Side Story when they form rival gangs. Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) is aloof toward the goings-on of his Montague cousins, but after he realizes that Juliet (Claire Danes) is a Capulet at the end of one very wild party, the enmity between the two clans becomes the root of his angst. He relies heavily -- and with serious consequences -- on his rebel gender-bender of a friend, Mercutio (Harold Perrineau Jr.), and Father (not Friar) Lawrence (Pete Postlethwaite) for protection and support. Romeo is, of course, exiled, and it looks like Juliet will be forced into an arranged marriage with the bland Paris (Paul Rudd). It ends, as Romeo and Juliet must, when Romeo hears a tragic piece of misinformation and brings his suicide wish to what was meant to be Juliet 's temporary tomb. This time, though, the turf and the weapon of choice have taken a turn toward the surreal.

Well, yeah...because members of Romeo's and Juliet's social class didn't really think love had much to do with marriage (and the girls didn't often have much if any say over whom they ended up married to). They married for economic and political reasons, not romantic ones. Paris is the perfect example -- Juliet's parents allow her to meet Paris before they marry her off, but they don't really expect her to love him (they would expect that to come later if it happened at all). Paris is what people used to call an "appropriate" young man, meaning that he comes from a prosperous family and has a good reputation.

I didn't either at first lol When I first watched this movie at school 10 seconds into the movie and I was like "...huh?.." But then I did alot of work on Romeo and Juliet for school and around that time, against my will and so now I understand everything in that movie like a 1st language

Man if there’s anybody I think worth studying it’s Baz Luhrmann. He really knows how to work people and emotions. I think he finds a balance between sweet, passion, and lust when directors tend to lean towards one of the three instead. That’s no bad because it can work better in different movies with different intentions but obviously the most enthralling are these mixes. He is also a master of tension, but not just tension between people who aren’t physically together but even the tension when they are. Anybody can make tension from across a table but when two people are right against each other is a whole other level. Mad respect, you will always be my main inspiration dude.

What no-one seems to realise about Juliet is that even though she's over the moon that the man she loves loves her, she's still trying to keep her head. She wants to be sure that he means it when he says it, and she knows that this isn't how people are supposed to fall in love.

Kate at the time was older than Leo so she was more mature and Leo was still a teen and was silly for the most part. For Romeo and Juliet, Leo and Claire got along well and even dated.

I just watched this scene in my second period today! I thought it was hallarious, but had to keep myself from laughing so that no one looked at me weird. also, the fact that everyone was grossed out, made it even harder not to laugh! I managed though. anyone else watch this in 9th grade?
