Few years later and they had Hollywoods nightclub, which was a huge pull into Romford. In the early 90s they got approval to open all of those bars and pubs along South St and the rest is history!

We got the ice rink a couple of years later, where I spent my childhood. I went to loads of ice rinks, and romford was the best ice rink for spectators of hockey. I'm sad they knocked it down.

I went to the Lea Bridge Road ice rink a week or two after it opened, back in the early 1980s, with my mate Dave. I was 50p short, for the entry price when I got there and was wondering what to do. When I said to Dave about it, the man behind us overheard the conversation and asked how much I was short. He very kindly gave me 50p and I was over the moon, as I really thought I wasn't going to get in. It was a day to remember for me, for sure. The generous man who gave me the money made my day. There was one bad moment though, when a man broke his leg on the ice. It broke at the top of his boot and ther look on his face said it all. I really felt sorry for him.

lived here since 1978. My sister worked at the Dolphin Centre for a while. Half the things they said it was going to have never materialised, it was just a swimming pool with waves in the end. the building was sinking as soon as it was built. when it got ripped down it was one less place for kids to go.

i used to live in romford. born and bred. I thought the area was ok when I was younger. I was only a kid back then but the entertainment facilities were fine for me going into the dolphin swimming pool and going into the cinemas to watch movies it was a fine town back then and i used to go nightclubs weekly to. Sadly over the last 10 years the town has gone downhill.

Funny old world. Growing up in Mile End in the 90s, I always looked to Romford, Barking, Ilford etc as nice and moving up in the world. Now it’s the other way around!

@@Ballsdeepsportyeah i was thinking that, surely romford would have been seen as an escape and a better life to many still living in the east end at the time. did essex/east end get on?

Obviously it's a London borough but spiritually it's Essex and I think most people refer to it as so still.

The Council shut the swimming pool, which then stayed empty for years. Hollywoods nightclub, which was fantastic, came and went (the site is now an eyesore, a block of flats) and the whole area is now a sh*t hole. The overpaid Council leaders and politicians really know how to run down a place. They are experts at doing that!

Always the same problem. Romford goes through ebbs and flows of having nothing to offer people under... well... 40 years old and then the occasional exciting period with a couple of bars/clubs. 'Trouble' has always been a problem for city centre nightlife. Council run activities and programmes only ever really targeting seniors and families also being a story as old as time.

In 1981 i was putting up/taking down the market stalls 4 nights a week. £12 a week 4-5hrs per night in all weather. you didnt get home to bed till gone midnight sometimes and then i had bloody school next day, unwashed and reaking of rotten vegetables. There was nothing to do in romford if you were young except fighting, drinking or if you had no aspirations at all....glue sniffing in the horrible subways. Romford town centre was still 10times better than growing up in Harold Hill. i got out asap. Awful place.
