Angela Richards (of BBC 'Secret Army' fame) gives a rousing performance here on the superb lost song 'I Don't Love Him Enough', from Ron Grainer's and Ron Millar's 1966 school exam musical 'On The Level'. The song is notable as it was dropped from the show only a week into its initial Liverpool run after adverse notices caused the show's length to be reduced in March 1966. By the time the show moved on to Southampton and then to the West End of London a total of five songs had been abandoned, with this one being the most notable. The song did not appear on the soundtrack album which was recorded just before the show opened in the West End in April 1966.
The song later appeared on the B side of a rare solo single released in April 1966 by Angela Richards, who originally sang the song in those early 'On The Level' shows in Liverpool.
The A side of that single was a solo cover of another 'On The Level' song called 'Strangely Attractive' (this A side is the second song posted here) which in the stage production Angela sang as a duet with Gary Bond. This solo cover was scored differently to the stage and soundtrack album versions, which were arranged by Ron Grainer himself.
Angela performed this 7" single version of 'Strangely Attractive' on the UK TV show 'Thank Your Lucky Stars' on 7 May 1966; unfortunately this edition of the show is now considered lost. The last time Angela sang the song on stage was on 30 July 1966, when the very last performance of 'On The Level' was given at the Saville Theatre in London.
I Don't Love Him Enough and Strangely Attractive were both composed by Ron Grainer, with lyrics by Ron Millar and with a string arrangement by John Gregory. The single was released as Fontana TF692 in April 1966. Research, vinyl transcription and audio restoration are by Ron Seniscal.
