This rare video is from the wiped 10 July 1966 edition of the George Mitchell Minstrels' popular Dutch TV show 'Mid-evening Serenade'.
The songs being performed here in this medley are 'Plaisir d'Amour', 'Getting Sentimental', 'Moon River' and 'Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing'.
This night-time section of the show was recorded in early June 1966 on the beach at the Hotel Spaander, Volendam, Northern Holland. The 40-minute show, called 'Midavondserenade in Volendam', was produced on 625-line videotape by the Katholieke Radio Omroep organisation for broadcast on the national channel Nederland 1 on 10 July 1966. The entire show was later wiped, with this clip surviving only by virtue of its recently discovered inclusion in another TV show.
This particular edition of the show was reshot on colour film later on in June 1966 by George Mitchell's own production company. This colour version was screened at the Golden Rose of Montreux television festival in 1967, but was not able to contend for the Golden Rose award as it had not been shown on TV within the allowed qualifying period.
This colour 'Midavondserenade' show (the first of four George Mitchell shows shot in colour in Holland and Yugoslavia) had its debut screening in Holland on 29 July 1970 on the channel Nederland 2. The whereabouts of this version of the show is currently unknown. The three other 30-minute colour shows made in Yugoslavia (which featured the George Mitchell Singers under the name 'The Happy Sixteen') were shown on Dutch TV in 1969.
Research and video restoration is by Ron Seniscal.

Ah! After a bleak night with rain battering down and wind howling, I tune in to KZfaq and... WOW! not only am I treated to this super 'new' clip, but the sun has come out! Thank you for both the music and the informative notes. I know that you, too, are an avid Minstrels fan, and on this occasion you have presented us with a sequence more in line with George Mitchell's BBC programme, "Music, Music, Music", in which there was no black make-up. Singing on a real beach at night - makes a change from studio sand! For the benefit of viewers who may wonder, the soloist is Ted Darling.

I'm interested to know - does anybody recognize any of the performers besides Ted and Margaret in this video, and Vanessa in the other one? Are these all the real Minstrels? I don't even know how many there were.

Yes, the faces of the singers are familiar as I've seen them in the programmes that were published to be sold at the George Mitchell / B&W Minstrel stage shows. A bit of work on these would likely provide names for all the singers here. Although there were multiple casts to cover all the seaside stage shows in the UK no more than a dozen members of the troupe went over to Holland to make these shows and I think these were picked from the cast that made the UK television shows for the BBC.

@@Amfonyx Very interesting, thank you! These videos are really surreal - and not only because they put faces to the voices. The first one, especially, creates the illusion that you've stumbled on a home movie of the old gang goofing around off the clock, as it were, even though it's a well polished dance routine and a very familiar recording. It feels like a time capsule, even though it wasn't intended as one.

And it hardly needs to be added that the recording of 'Plaisir D'amour,' as with most of their records, is the best rendition of the song I expect I'll ever hear.
