Kangaroo Steak | 캥거루 스테이크 | 캥거루 고기
Today's Menu is 'Kangaroo Steak'.
All these years living in Australia, I still haven't had kangaroo yet...
Really wanted to find out what it tastes like so I decided to give it a try.
Kangaroos are RIPPED and so, it has a very low fat content (~2%).
The crust smelled just like a beef steak would but the inside meat had an unfamiliar 'Gamey (?)' smell.
It's not necessarily bad, just not used to it.
It kinda reminds me of the first time I tried lamb.
Much easier to get used to IMO since it tastes quite similar to beef.
It's recommended to cook to medium rare.
I prefer medium tho
Ingredients:
Kangaroo Meat (Loin Medallions): 1
Butter: 1 Slice
Garlic: 3 Cloves
Rosemary: 1
Salt: 2 Pinches
Vegetable Oil: 2 Tbsp

If anyone is concerned about endangering kangaroos, there’s an overpopulation of them here in Australia to the point they’re disrupting other wildlife.

@@Ash-fd8ww That’s actually a great comparison. A lot of Americans still find it a bit off putting to eat deer, while a lot of Aussies still find the concept of eating Kangaroo rather novel and strange. For a lot of Americans, it’s weird because it feels like you’re eating Bambi (or their mom) while for Aussies it’s almost like the equivalent to someone telling you that shark or crocodile meat is readily available at the supermarket.

@@zippinghen It’s really good, though! It should be more common, honestly, getting some meat through hunting would probably help lower beef consumption a lot and maybe help cut some of those gasses down.

I'm surprised to see so many fellow Aussies so bewildered or surprised by kangaroo meat. Aboriginal Australians have been eating roo meat for millennia, and it's not exactly like roos are endangered at any rate (if anything, they tend to be culled in some places because of overgrazing). It's uncommon nowadays, sure, but it's really not any stranger than eating beef or pork.

Interesting, but try not to use the word "aboriginal", it's rude to the people bc "ab-" means "away, from" or "not", for example "abuse", so "aboriginal" means "not original". Call them "indigenous" instead, it's nicer.

@@chadbroski9438 I wasn’t aware of the word history, I’ll definitely look into it some more. However, Aboriginal (Australian) is generally seen as a valid term over here, and a cursory glance at the etymology of “aboriginal” shows its roots as the Latin phrase “ab origine” meaning “from the beginning”. Definitely interested in learning more if you have some pointers on what to research though!

@@chadbroski9438 It's the difference in using Latin and Greek roots Greek will give the translation "Not Original" While Latin will give a translation closer to "From Original" Indigenous also works but Aboriginal gets a bad rap from translation errors. At least I think it's a translation error.

It's kinda just like eating deer. It's probably more strange to foreigners because they might see kangaroos as a little intelligent but idk I've heard that they're pretty fuckin stupid.

As an Aussie I think I've only tasted Kanga meat maybe twice? still kind of a novelty concept to a lot of us too! You did a great job with it! But yes as you suggested i hear medium rare is best for it

Yes!!! Kangaroo is awesome and very healthy. Defs cook it quick and hot to stop it getting chewy. It's very nice in a hearty stew with potatoes. Similar cooking method, sear and cook the meat quickly, take out, cook onions and garlic in same pan, then deglaze the bottom of the pan with beef stock then cook a nice big stew with the meat, thyme, potatoes and crunchy bread.

kangaroo is a VERY good and lean meat!! I've only had it once as an American, but I think that was over a decade ago now. fun fact, it's high in iron and zinc and may reduce risk factors associated with heart disease. edit: nvm, all that butter probably negated any kind of health benefits that meat possibly had haha!! XD

People (im presuming foreigners) in the comments seem to think kangaroos are rare or special. Guys, its literally no different to eating venison (aka deer), except unlike deer theres literally twice as many roos here as there are people. This isn't shocking on any level.

Huh, this was interesting! I've heard kangaroo meat is a delicacy in Australia, and I was very curious about it! The raw meat reminds me of venison in appearance (Only had it once, tho. It's very gamy!) The cooked meat looked very tasty, too! :3

I'd've given it a sharp marinade and made it a little redder, my dude. Still, very good! EDIT: Just noticed the instructions-reading in the credits. Yeah, Med-rare is good, and I still stand by the marinating thing. Roo's a very red, very lean meat, so it actually goes really well with sharp flavours.

this is a level 80 dish, but its possible at level 40, its really difficult to get the kangaroo meat though, it is very op and heals you almost to max at 1 hp. cant forget! you have to unlock australia first thats why its impossible for level 1-39.
