Roof leaking - looking for the roof leak near box vent

Customer called having a roof leak. The roof leak was in the kitchen near the back door about four feet in. Started by looking for obvious roof damage. Everything look to be okay so turned my attention to the roof box.

Thanks for the tidbit of cutting the corners on the underside shingles. Just like when doing a closed valley. I would have forgotten about that.

Yes you need at least 3/8” space for water to run off. I’ve seen vents that were done too tight leak .

Nice video thanks. I was just at my neighbors looking at a leak. I removed some moss and put some roof caulk around the vents temporarily until they can get it properly addressed.

Excellent explanation about trimming shingle on diagonal that lies on top of flange. A demo on your indoor mock-up may be helpful to some in showing how water can get under the unclipped shingles vs how easily the water flows down over the clipped shingle.

I have seen a few videos on installing those, and I see people have different ideas on how to install those vents. Im a bit suprised to see that.

We've been using ice and water shield on all vents. Cut a 2 foot peice and then cut in half so you end up with 2- 2 x 1 1/2 foot pieces. Run the shingles up to where you start the vent then put the peice centered on the hole with the 1 1/2 going up and down and 2 foot wide. Lap it over the shingle so that it covers the top of the row below but not down far enough to cover the sealing strip area.

Ice and water over flange and over the top of shingle over each course around the vent and you don't have to cut corners. ICE AND WATER EVERYTIME ON ANY VENT. (45yrs experience)

You are a good roofer. This is hard to explain to even experience roofers. Like total dumshits that have been burying the flange thinking it's the proper way.

This is why I always tell guys I work with to always put one shingle underneath, cause you avoid this happening plus it just makes sense if water happens to get underneath, and goes to the side that it flows down the shingle instead of underneath. And do have a quart inch gap between vents, etc and flashings

Wow thats something I've never seen, that roof must be pretty low slope? I don't like those vents, I much prefer the plastic duraflo vents but I'm not sure if they're available there

I am not a roofer but have wondered why they don't run a bead of sealant under the surrounding shingles. All the nail holes seem like they will leak.

question when you get time: Would you put a roof on in 60 degree weather or if you had choice would you wait until warmer weather?

60 degrees should be fine. With that temperature and some sunlight it should start sticking down. With that being said if it's one day of 60 degrees and say December or January probably not because it won't have time to seal.

@@GrandRoofingInc Appreciate the advice. I am in Tennessee Sometimes we get some nice days in November, even up into low 70's. I had some wind damage that is thankfully getting covered after 3 months dealing with the insurance. I definitely wouldn't put on in December or January here. Probably have to wait until March if don't get lucky with weather. It's a gamble, but I don't want to take any chances with a new roof not sealing/sticking . Thx again for advice

Question for you, I seen a video on here that this guy would put the synthetic underlayment over the water and ice shield. Claiming that when someone tears it off it would be way easier. Is that a good move?

I highly doubt he was thinking ahead twenty-five / thirty-five years or more for the next guy tearing it off. I have seen guys when doing a steep job that has ice and water on the bottoms, covering it with synthetic paper about two-thirds of the way. That is mainly so they can grip the paper because some ice and Waters are very slick. Anyone tearing off a roof that has ice and water is going to be a pain in the butt.. The ice sticks so well to the deck you'll end up pulling up the wood. Shingles do seem to bond together to the ice and water over time which will also be a bear to remove. If you had synthetic paper over the ice it would allow the shingles to come off much easier. It's not going to help the ice and water be removed any. With that said I don't think covering the ice and water with synthetic paper will stop it from functioning during ice dams.

He’s good guy . The next roofer doing the tear off will look him up and buy him a beer. That ice and water crap should be illegal. Almost every contractor is using it now.
