We visit and hike Black Mesa, the rooftop of Oklahoma. Located in the Black Mesa Nature Preserve in Cimarron County, the highest point in Oklahoma has an elevation of 4,973 feet. The highpoint has had a colorful history both in prehistoric times and more recent ones. It has been the home of dinosaurs, Native American tribes, and during the Wild West, a refuge for thieves, cattle rustlers, and scoundrels. Nowadays it is a lot quieter, with just the chance of a rattlesnake or two, but still remote and isolated. Join us as we explore America and go highpointing!

The Carrizo Creek site is just a short distance up the road from the Black Mesa trailhead. It was fairly well marked too.

Fun fact: The highest mountaintop in Oklahoma, Mount Scott in the Wichita Mountains, is much lower than Black Mesa, the highest point in Oklahoma, thus making Oklahoma the state where their mountains are lower than their plains! It is also one of only 2 US states, Maryland being the other, where their highest point is on a land feature who'se actual high point is in another state (Black Mesa itself being over 5000 feet in the New Mexico or Colorado side and Backbone Mountain (Maryland's highest point at 3460 feet) having parts over 3600 feet in the West Virginia side of the mountain!

Don't forget Boundary Peak! It is actually a subpeak of Montgomery Peak, which is several hundred feat higher and right across the border in California. Also Connecticut is on that list as well, its highpoint is on the slope of Mt. Frissell whose summit is across the border in Massachusetts. Eventually when I redo the Oklahoma episode I'll have to add in a bit about Mount Scott.

I went camping there with my dad and brother one time and the weather was supposed to be fine, we checked over and over to make sure the sky was clear and we could see the stars, so after we setup the tents it started sprinkling, then a few minutes later it was POURING with huge wind gust and the rain turned to hail, so we abandoned the tents and went into the truck where we slept the whole night 😂 luckily one tent survived and it was big enough for all of us, the other was blown into the river the next morning

Boise City should have something. Though we actually stayed at a KOA in La Junta, CO the night before we filmed this. The Cimarron Grasslands are right across the border in Kansas, and the Rita Blanca Grasslands are to the south in Texas. Both are areas I hope to check out at some point.

@@RooftopsofAmerica Good luck, some of those rooftops out west, I'd be chicken to climb. Do you think after you complete the rooftops series, you'll do a low points series?
@RooftopsofAmerica
@RooftopsofAmerica 5 жыл бұрын
@@ECWnWWF I'll be touching on lowpoints, and there will be a dedicated episode for Death Valley, but overall I haven't given it as much thought. As for after the series concludes the team has been tossing around a couple of ideas but no hard decisions have been made yet.

You can't actually camp at Black Mesa Nature Reserve where the highpoint is, but nearby is Black Mesa State Park and I believe they have campsites there. I'm not sure on the fees or if registration is required.

On this day we were rambling and filming across the wilds of the Sooner State in order to reach a state highpoint in what may have been one of the wettest days of the year, ironic since this is the driest spot in all of Oklahoma.

Very informative video with all the actual history. Except for the "millions of years" nonsense, that is unproven speculation by palaeontologists who deny the Creator.
