Agreed, I went into this blind. I didn't even know whether they would get out, let alone that it would be so early in the film, and that most of the content would take place afterwards. I think if I had had that information going into the film, it would have been a much less tense and rewarding experience.

For the first half of the movie Room didn't seem so small, but it's crazy how veryyy small it looked when they went back at the end to say goodbye. Ma was so strong to be able to raise Jack in such captivity and try to give him a normal life. This movie was so touching.

The scene where she's interviewed by a TV station interviewer pissed me off. I mean c'mon asking her why she didn't getting out sooner and stuff; hello... she was held captive and was threatened by an evil man!
@heathergraham2581
@heathergraham2581 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. I thought that journalist was way out of line with her questioning. If I had been the victim, I would have stopped the interview right then and there. The journalist was coming across more like an interrogator rather than an interviewer. The audacity of her to assume that the victim should have trusted her abductor|rapist to do right by her baby and leave him off somewhere to be found? LOL. Because we all know abductors|rapists are such morally upstanding citizens who can be trusted. Was the journalist really stupid enough to think the captor wanted to risk being seen dumping a newborn infant off somewhere? Plus, the implication that the victim was "selfish" enough to keep her own baby with her, a baby she was forced to have, was just over the top. What that reporter did was subtle victim shaming, arrogantly pretending as if she knew what was better for the child within such unnatural circumstances.

daphnee paul he still could have threatened her without a gun. Like when Jack came out of the wardrobe and she yelled at him not to touch Jack. He chocked her and almost killed her. He also said “Talk to me like that again and I’ll kill you” His physical state, being bigger and stronger than Joy, was threatening enough to make her stay in that room. Not only that but keeping Jack safe.

The Kid from Ironman 3 she didnt say anything racist. she said movie critics should be more diverse and have more equal opportunity for marginalized people to review material made towards them/their community instead of having mostly white critics criticizing and poorly rating content that they may not socially/culturally understand. people (mostly those white men) took this out of context and wrote misleading headlines about how “brie hates white men”, when in reality she never said that nor did she know that thats why shes getting so much hate (and death threats to the point she cant leave her house without security). theres an interview where someone asks her about it, and it’s revealed how twisted her words were taken out of context. also if you read the original interview, she said nothing racist. she just wants equality and diversity in the media industry- just like tom holland and rdj has recently (and in the past) have stated.

I don't get it...everyone seems to be so upset claiming that the trailer ruins the movie when in reality this is how the movie is suppose to play out. I read the book and about 1/3 of the book talks about the room...the rest of it is about life OUTSIDE of the room. This is what the author wanted. To portray the way life is once Jack escapes the room and seeing how he adapts to the world.

I saw the movie yesterday without knowing anything about it. Then today I saw this trailer. The commenters are right. This trailer gives away the whole movie, which could cause some to not watch it, because they already know what is going to happen, that they get free. I'm glad I didn't know anything about it, because I was captivated so much I was balling my eyes out throughout the whole movie. I'm still emotional about it a day later, and probably will be for a while. That's how great this move is. It draws you in, especially the way that Jack describes his world, both in the Room, and outside the Room.

@@chapmaned24 It didn't give away everything, I'd say. If you're really that obsessed with being in the dark, this may disappoint you, but on the whole, I don't think they were trying to hide the fact that they got out. It's still intense how it happens without the trailer, but since it was about not the escape near the end, I think it's arguable that the trailer gave you everything you needed. Nobody said that Larson's character actually struggled after the fact. Only one line of dialogue actually hints that this happened in this trailer.

Room 1408 was about Ghosts haunting a hotel room, and I thought that this movie would be in like manner, so I watched it without realizing it's content, which was totally different from what I expected, a scary ghost story. So, based on emotion alone, I'd rather not see this trailer, otherwise, I might not have cried so much. I would have expected what the trailer showed, and not been so emotional.
@thefirstbourne149
@thefirstbourne149 5 жыл бұрын
chapmaned24 But that was a genre where you’re supposed to be worried about what happened next. Here, you already know what happened and the more suspenseful sequence is supposed to make you realize how hard it is rather than be scared that they aren’t going to make it out of that Room. There are times you should know what they’re trying to do rather than just what you think they’re trying to do. It helps to watch the trailer to know what you’re getting into and compare it to the movie that you see they’re trying to make. In this case, they marketed exactly what they wanted you to see, so it really doesn’t make sense to keep saying that the trailer ruined the film if both teased and paid off the exact emotions you were meant to feel.

A beautiful movie. It made me cry several times. It is not what I expected from a movie about rape and entrapment, instead it was something beautiful and touching. No matter what, Ma did everything she could to protect her child, and it was a heartwrenching thing to see how strongly they loved eachother and helped eachother. This movie made me realize that again, there is nothing stronger than a mother's love for her child and this movie portrayed that perfectly. It is also about how it's time to say goodbye to the things we once loved, and to go out and explore all the wonders life gives with the true love that resides inside you. That at some point in our lives, we must move on because there are better things waiting for us. I almost cried when the mother attempted suicide, but when she saw the love from her kid it kept her alive, and again it made me see how they both needed eachother. I was expecting something quite somber and dramatic, and it was dramatic, but dramatic in a hopeful and inspiring way to never give up. I am definitely showing this movie to my children when they are old enough, nothing gets you through anything more than love.

@Mooky Blaylock Even without that, I think it's missing the point. Yeah, they do make it seem really intense as to whether you're supposed to get out or not, but then that doesn't really make it the point of the movie. The whole point was how she dealt with it.

Not sure how I feel about this immediately spoiling the second half of the book. It's what makes the first half so intense--at least for me. Looks like a potentially solid translation to film, but there are some things a novel can do that a film simply cannot.

For anyone watching the trailer on the fence, this is a really good movie! Watched the movie before the trailer and I'm glad I did. The escape was such a tense handful of scenes, I really wasn't sure if they'd make it (I didn't realize it was such a long movie!) A beautiful score with some incredibly sincere acting.

bbygrlpt2 That's a good question (I know it doesn't go this deep) My guess is that the movie is trying to put you in the shoes of Jack and Jack would never call his mother Joy. So, hence her being credited as Ma (stupid theory, I know)

I just watched this movie last night and I keep having the urge to just…talk about it, I guess. It was so riveting I didn’t take my eyes off the screen the entire time. The writing was so well done, I was really struck by how realistic it all was in regards to just normal human behavior. Jack was cute sometimes and annoying asf at other times. His entire world had been Room his whole life, and all in one day he learned there was a world outside of it and had to escape to it - alone! Of course he would’ve been scared and exhausted and just wanting to go back to what he knew. Joy had built up her walls on a foundation of the routine of her life while she was in Room, just so that she could survive being kidnapped and held as a prisoner, being assaulted every single day, giving birth and raising a baby alone in a garden shed, and protecting that child as best as she could. Then when she got out, that foundation was no longer there and those walls had nothing to stand on. And as they slowly fell one by one after their escape, she truly hit rock bottom. I saw her attempt at taking her own life as like her hitting the “RESET” button - it was something she needed to do in order to start over and learn to live again, not just survive. The most interesting (and realistic) interactions for me were actually the ones that revolved around her dad and her stepdad. Her dad being unable to deal with what his daughter was now, and her stepdad becoming such a friend to Jack, were completely contrary to the “happily ever after” story that we’ve come to expect from movies and stories. Ideally, Joy & Jack would’ve come home to her still-married parents, everything would be exactly as it was when she had been taken, and everyone would be happy and get along the moment she came home, The End. But the way it all actually played out was just so real and honest, and I really appreciated that. I also really noticed how little focus there was on Nick throughout the film. You rarely saw him other than through the slats on Wardrobe a couple times. Even when he got caught after their escape, it was literally just shown as a two-second blurb on the news. This was a refreshing change for me, because usually the media and stories/films love to focus on the bad guys and so often leave out the struggles their victims go through, which is actually all that matters. Trying to “understand” why the bad guys do what they do is just a waste of time - some people are just bad and need to be locked away forever, period. It was nice to watch a film that made the bad guy as small as he was. Anyway, what a great movie!

I wonder if the novel was at all inspired by the case of Josef Fritzel, who had locked his daugher up in his basement for twenty years and in that time raped her repeatedly. She raised three children in his basement until finally she managed to alert the world that she was trapped in there; I suspect the show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt might be inspired by that case as well.

The Author of room said when the Fritzel case happened she was curious of the 5 year old child and what it was like for them to see the world for the first time. This is how this story of Room was inspired.

RachelG1979 The real story was nothing short of horrific; just the very idea of the whole thing is so disturbing to me I can't even spend long periods of time reading about it without needing to stop. What a horribly controlling person he must have been to have planned something like this with meticulous precision years before he ever trapped her in there.
