A new edition of Roqe, featuring a deep dive into the pre-Islam history of Iran with acclaimed cultural historian Dr. Richard Foltz and an examination of how the common conflation of Iranians and Islam (and Islamism) is actually not historically supported. Dr. Foltz joins Jian to discuss Iran before the arrival of Islam in the 7th century, shedding light on the ancient Persian empires, Zoroastrianism, and the rich cultural heritage that predates Islamic influence. Dr. Foltz, a Canadian scholar with a PhD in Middle Eastern History from Harvard University and a professor at Concordia University in Montréal, brings his extensive knowledge of Iranian civilization and its far-reaching impacts on the broader region. Plus, Pegah and Jian convene for the Roqe Roundup to discuss the upcoming runoff election in Iran this Friday, and the numerous football games and football fever brewing.

Wow. What an amazing interview! The perspective, historical context, and objective analysis, especially over the last 1400 years, were just great to listen to.

This is a comment on the guest, not on the host nor on the Iranian people and their culture. In the 6th minute - he made a comment everything he liked about India had come from Iran.That's a rather superficial understanding of whatever he liked about Medieval India. India has history preceding the Turkish conquest in the 1190. Turks, who looked up to Iranian culture and language, in their rule over Norh India imposed Persian as the language of administration, and then followed some cultural influence. But in India those inputs were moulded and modified beyond recognition. North Indian Classical music bear very little resemblance to Persian Classical music. Food - biryani, pulau, etc resemble very little their Persian counterpart. Plus India always continued with the deep culture that had developed in the First Millenium B C or First Millenium A D. Only a portion of Indian culture during the medieval period got influenced , and that also under Royal tutelage. Very shallow observation from a tenured professor.

Thanks for the episode. However, I'm afraid saying that being Iranian is just an affinity is simply wrong. I appreciate the gentleman's passion for Iran but his view is not accurate. Being Iranian is not quite as arbitrary sa having a strong affinity for Iran.

Just started listening and will go thru the entire episode, but I had to drop this right away. I'm sorry, India is NOT defined or identified by the islamic invaders who were squatting, plundering, destroying, and raping, and killing our people. We had architectural marvel much before the turkish or the mughal empire existed. You're only exposed to it because you didn't know any better or you were purposefully exposed to everything Islamic. It's like the West thinking Paneer Tikka is the quintessential representation of Indian cuisine. Wrong! There are, at least, and this is humble account, more than 30 different cuisines in India that's got nothing to do with islam! There's much you don't know and yet to learn ...

Rig Veda was not scribed because of so-called aryan influence. It's the reverse. The civilization of what is now India or Bharat extended all the way to Persia, and therefore, what you found in Rig Veda was being practiced by the Persians.

@first9_yt aah! There's that quintessential line of question that tempts the other side to lay threadbare all evidences on the table. Not so fast. While I'm happy to provide you links to several research and archeological reports that'll support my statement, since you're the one challenging, please explain why you say there's no historical evidence. If you were born in this civilization and if you're a practicing Sanatani, you wouldn't even be asking this question. That's evident. Believe me, I can point you to a hundred different sources of research on this.

Quoting abstract from Vedic and Avestan. N Kazanas July 2011 Page 01 *In this essay I examine independent linguistic evidence, often provided by Iranianists like R. Beekes, and arrive at the conclusion that the Avesta, even its older parts (the gāθās), is much later than the Ṛgveda. Also, of course, that Vedic is more archaic than Avestan and that it was not the Indoaryans who moved away from the common Indo-Iranian habitat into the Region of the Seven Rivers, but the Iranians broke off and eventually settled and spread in ancient Iran.*

Dear friend, Iran has been named by the Greeks (mistakenly Persia). Iranians have always called themselves Iranians (Eraanians, citizens of Iran-Shahr EranShahr). I think we should correct this historical mistake. We do not call Americans New Yorker, do we? or Canadians Albertans, do we? Thank you.

You are actually wrong, Eran is more broadly applied. But Persia came from the region of Pars where Persian tribes emerged. There were many Iranian tribes (or confederations of tribes) Kurds, Mideans, Persians, Sak, Sogd, Massagets, and others. For a full list look it up on Wikipedia. It was named Persia because the people of Pars commanded by Kserks took over Iran and other tribes.
@johndewey6358

@@Personal-q1z Thank you for your comment. I am very familiar with all of the Iranian tribes. Eran (today's Iran) name is etched in the inscriptions (such as Behistoon, aka Beestoon) for thousands of years, also in multiple Iranian literature such as Shahnameh that is based on several older Khoaaynameh. Therefore my comment is correct and supported by Iranian's own naming convention. PS. you may want to correct some of the tribes that you named; for example: Kurds are Medes, also Saka (covering both Northern Saka + Southern Saka).....
@Personal-q1z
@Personal-q1z 5 күн бұрын
@@johndewey6358 no, it’s not confirmed Medes are the ancestors of Kurds. Most likely Medes are modern Azeris who were turkized.

@@johndewey6358 I don't get what you wanna prove. Iran was a greater region that encompassed many Iranian-speaking tribes(tribal confederation). But the name Persia came from the southern part of today's Iran called Pars where Persian tribes lived. Persian king Cyrus conquered the Median Empire and founded Achaemenid. So Greeks were right by calling it Persia because the ruling elite were Persians. Anyways it does not matter whatever you call it today most Iranians today are mixed with Turks and others. Iranian or Persians whatever you call lost all the power and influence over the former empire and vassals, today all of that is claimed by Turko-Mongols. Even scholars, poets, and writers are taught to be Turks in schools. And Iran cannot do anything about it.
@Personal-q1z
@Personal-q1z 5 күн бұрын
@@johndewey6358 also about Beestoon inscriptions. It does not say this land is Iran, it’s Cyrus claims to be Iranian (Aryan). Anyways Persians can claim it freely since they failed all Iranian people when they lost to Barbar Arabs and Turkish hordes.

In fact, without Iran and all the area around it we wouldn't have the CentralAsiahollywood studios scripts of Bukhari. Islam would be another religion. The 5 prayers, Mohamed's life, Mecca , all of this appeared from a man from this area 2 centuries after the official begginings of Islam. If you don't think it's it's important, think if Napoleon's life - out of nowhere - was all recopilated in our times. Plus many terms of music, culture, etc is actually Persian. (I am Lebanese)

@arunavasare2945 Humanity, humanity, humanity! Although I haven't watched this KZfaq video, except at the initial. However, the concept of his sense of his Iran is the banality of "We were great = We were Civilised like the best of the best = the ancient Greeks" like humanity telling its tales, how humanity won the physical evolutionary against all the other humans that existed! Whether religious or non-religious, as far as telling, they all tell tales! And that's the dominant propensity of humanity! It was, is, and will keep being! So, neither Indian nor non-Indian, it's the evolution non-physically of the physical humanity that tells all, whether one thinks it's a non-existent or not! Make what you want. That's what we are, like it or dislike it! Circumstantial luck or unluck, that's humanity’s agency. It's already there!
