Sarajevo, YUGOSLAVIA - 1984 Winter Games, Figure Skating, Ladies' Long Program - Rosalynn Sumners of the United States did not make any major errors except popping a couple of triples into doubles and a couple of double Axels into singles. Despite the reduced difficulty in her program, four of the judges still gave her 1st place ordinals in the Long Program. However, that wasn't enough for her to win the Long Program. She had to settle for 2nd in the Long Program and the Silver Medal here.

Well, it's not how you start but how you finish. Rosalynn went on from this and had a wonderful pro career. She grew as an artist and an athlete, and audiences loved her. As a nice postscript, she and Witt became good friends during their time with Stars On Ice.

While she had that defined "Dorothy Hamill-like" carriage to her skating, that was really all she excelled at. The jumps here were just not good enough, she left opportunities everywhere after the first 2 triples. She popped FOUR jumps total, fixing only one afterwards. Her spins were not as good as Witt's. Rosalynn tended to not hold positions long enough, she couldn't muster speed on them and they were kind of haphazardly thrown in. Witt was the better skater here. She may not have the "American Poised Elegance" of Sumners, but she was far more exciting.

Sumners certainly deserved to win the Silver Medal. She missed some triple and double jumps, but the ones she landed were very well done. Technical marks are not just about how many triple jumps you do, but equally important how well you do them. Furthermore, Sumners had beautiful edges, body positions, posture, refinement, finish, and execution. Witt landed more triple jumps, but one would never say she was a text book jumper: speed in and out of jumps, position in the air, distance travelled, quality of take-offs and landings, etc.. Her positions and quality were average as were her edges. She did not possess any outstanding skating qualities - Witt has never been held up as an example to skaters as a technical or artistic paragon. What Witt had was an undeniable will to win and when the pressure was on she always delivered a program that was best or second best and always good enough to win. In the annals of figure skating there are many women who were better skaters than Witt and many of them never won an Olympic gold.

Roslyn skated right after Katarina. Witt didn't exactly skate a great LP, but the loud cheers and applause got to Roslyn who later admitted it affected her LP. Chickening out of THREE triple jumps and popping two intended double axel is not gonna win Roslyn the Gold. As much as I wanted her to win, you cannot get the job done reducing three triples and popping two double axels. I would say Roslyn was actually lucky she won a Silver that year.

Rosalyn is a lovely skater but she really lacked confidence, power and was unconvincing. She had way too many pops or downgraded of jumps. It shouldn't have been close. She would not have been a threat Calgary. She did not have the guts or tech skills to compete with Ito, Manley, Thomas or Witt. I mean the girl popped at least four jumps. all the elegance in the world doesn't make up for the lack of energy which affected the program. She obviously was nervous as anyone would be but she really was overmarked ; she really let nerves get the better of her and that is where Witt reigns.

She only did 1 less triple than Witt (3 to 2) and probably had better artistry at this point in their careers, and was the world champ going in. I am not at all surprised it was very close still. I think if she had done the last double axel she would have won, oh well.

@libralady1010 The biggest problem with figures is they werent televised so there was no accountability for the scores and results. For instance did Chin and Zayak place so low in figures in Sarajevo since they performed their figures that poorly or were they put down that low since they were politically out of favor and the USFSA dumped them to only support Sumners. We never got to see them so there is no way to tell. Funny how Chin jumped to 2nd in figures at Worlds only 1 year later.

@@Juice_Lover123 Where did I say that she should have won because she had great edges? I simply pointed out that the technical merit mark was determined by assessing multiple criteria and not just jumps. If the winner is determined based solely on the number of triple jumps she completes then let's just do away with the other aspects/components of the sport and call it ice jumping.

I know I’m late to the game with my comment. I’ve noticed a lot are mentioning how overscored she was. I’ve read that it was not unusual for judges to give a little credit if they watched a skater in practice perform or land jumps perfectly. The coaches could also kiss up by taking a judge’s advice on a program, music, or a costume. Allegedly, that only happened in the 6.0 system & not the current system, but I honestly wouldn’t trust any of these judges or these skating federations, including the USFs or USFSA, as far as I could throw them.

@libralady1010 by contrast the last impression Sumners left with the judges was chickening out and popping her last 2 jumps, which left her with significantly less tech. content than Witt. Also finishing behind her music and stumbling a bit on her ending pose. I thought Witts choices of music and costume were perfect for her at that point of her career. She wasnt yet a great artist and didnt pretend to be, but she was already a great performer and presence and sold that.

It isnt like they had hindsight and they could know Chin would skate so well in her first Olympics and Zayak after 2 poor years would skate so well. The USFSA were probably also banking on that Witt would place really low in figures like at the 82 and 83 Worlds and Sumners who was great at figures by then could then coast to the gold with a big lead in figures (which obviously Chin and Zayak who struggled majorly in figures around then couldnt do). @libralady1010 I'm sure there were deals made at times--probably still are--but the Hamilton/Orser thing with Orser winning the short and long but Hamilton winning based on his dominance in the figures isn't so much a "deal" as it is just the way the scoring system worked at the time. Nothing crooked about it, the figures figured mightily in the final results, and Hamilton's superiority in that area (Orser was 7th after the figures) carried him to victory with 2nd's in the short and long.

True, that Hamilton won on figures. (At least in '84--he WAS a great skater in his prime, but he was not at his best in the '84 Olympics). My point was only that Hamilton winning on his figures was not crooked or contrived or the result of a "deal"--it was simply how the scoring system worked at the time. There wasn't as much difference in figures between Sumners and Witt (1st vs. 3rd) as there was between Hamilton and Orser in the figures (1st vs. 7th) so you're comparing apples and oranges

When you're only doing 3 or 4 Triples and 2 Double Axels, omitting one of each is glaring. It's huge. Even getting 5.8s and a 5.9 on this technically showed bias. This was not worthy of that. The other American women did better and sat further back. If you want to reward her with good artistic marks, fine. Dick Button noted that she popped 2 Toe Loops. Why she had 2 more in there when she already completed one is beyond me, but either way that's 2 triples. Two of 4. She had great carriage, speed and command of the ice but the actual technical aspects easily went to Witt. "Transitions" are nice to consider but this is the 6.0 scale. Roz couldn't spin for shit. That combo spin was just not worthy. That meant more at that point than a good ina bauer. The jumps weren't there this time. She really placed better than she deserved, which was lower than expected. The results of competitions then leaned heavily on "expectation".
@renzy79
@renzy79 4 жыл бұрын
@@Juice_Lover123 No, it's not huge in this era. Vladimir Kovalev, a 2-time world champion would pack his program with the same jumps and pop half of them. You were given credit for what you did accomplish not penalized for what you didn't. If you credit Roz for ALL the jumps she did then she had MORE technical content than Witt. Period. Also, it appears that you don't know much about this era if you are counting toe loops and toe walleys as the same jump. Roz's programs were COMPLETE. Her speed, footwork, transitions in and out of the jumps all count toward the technical mark. In 1976, Dorothy Hamill beat women who landed clean triples and more double axels (Dianne de Leeuw and Christine Errath) for that reason. Your technical standards appear to based on the modern IJS era, but even if that approach is taken when you add the technical value of both programs, Roz wins the technical mark. The artistic mark isn't even in question. If Roz should have placed second to anyone in the long it should have been Tiffany Chin, not Katarina Witt, but Chin was too far behind and too new to the senior international scene to be given first in the long.
