Here’s a little rose garden tour from this evening. I speak of the Parfuma collection from Kordes. I have had this collection of roses less than a year so these are just some of my very early thoughts on this particular collection of roses.
I also speak of rose fragrance along with some perils that can go with it especially with novice Rose growers like myself. As I say in the video and have always maintained I’m still learning and trying as best I can to bring you with me as I learn. The fragrance of roses can be particular to us at specific times in specific places and under specific conditions. Sometimes our roses can disappoint, sometimes they can excel. Perhaps it is the changing tapestry within our gardens that interests us so much.
Thanks for watching

I love all the pots with roses along the driveway. That is such a nice idea to welcome oneself home like that, I love it. I think the term they call those ball roses you were mentioning as chalice form maybe. They remind be of peonies. A cool thing with peonies is before the buds open you can cut the stalks with buds on them and keep in the fridge for up to a month, and just pull them out and put them in a vase and they'll open up. It's a way to enjoy peony blooms for a month longer than their season normally lasts.
@Jay_Jay

Excellent watersprouts. Do you know with regards to these chalice type roses at what earliest point can you cut the roses to bring inside and they will still go on to flower in a vase? When the green thingys holding the bud start to fold down? Once they have folded down completely? When the petals of the rose very first start to unfold? Can you please put into words. Thank you.

This is what I like in your video Jay Jay, your telling us the truth about the roses and your honesty in your comparison or observations amongst different roses. I was surprised to see Leonardo da Vinci rose, one of my favourite. I got my eyes on Poet‘s wife, very much interested how strong the scent of citrus note on it.😍🌹

Thank you Gemma, yes Leonardo as an actual flower it has surprised me. I could see it flowers very heavily from other photos and videos. But the actual flower is lovely. We have had two very sunny days and they are bleaching but it’s starting from such a strong pink I don’t think it will be possible to fade to an off white. Im just in the garden now, Poets wife for me today is just scraping into the strong fragrance Category. And I’ve put it alongside fruity Parfuma (which I know you have). For me it’s the same intensity today. Fruity Parfuma by the way really is fruity. The only rose fragrance in my garden I’m confident enough to say. Please let us know your thoughts and how you get on with fruity :) thanks Gemma

Yep got that Lucy thanks. I think it’s lower overnight temps are causing the fragrance to go up and down currently. For this time of year we have been seeing lows of 5-10 degrees which is odd for time of year. So even if it’s sunny hot and still in the day it’s been knocked off track. How long are your flowers lasting on fruity Parfuma?

Hello Jay. I’ve been gardening all my life. Several matters concerning the scent of roses. The first, if the rose genuinely has a strong scent it will be noticeable even in “poor” weather conditions. Secondly, pick the rose and bring in doors, smell it an hour later whilst still in doors. The scent should be there. Thirdly, sadly, people are sold substitutions, no the true rose they think they are buying. A very fragrant rose will sell out fast, especially if it’s vivid red. No prize for guessing these are in exceptional demand. The rose vendor will have very limited stock of that rose. So will send a rose that looks like the one you want to buy but it won’t have anything like the scent. Finally, true highly scented roses are very, very rare. When a certain famous rose vendor says “this rose is scented” it won’t be. Don’t buy it. If they say “exceptional fragrance” then you’re in for a chance. Parfuma roses are the best for scent but are often substituted for non scented varieties but you won’t be told it’s a substitute
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 20 күн бұрын
Hello there Andrew. I agree with much of what you say. Firstly it would not surprise me if people paying for fragrant roses get substitute roses when the ones they are after are actually sold out. It wouldn’t surprise me sadly. Also yes I agree entirely the actual scent is usually one below what is advertised. Light scent often means no scent. And your right strong or exceptionally strong fragrance means I’m in with a chance. All strong scented roses though in my garden at least, are not always strong scented. Many experts will say the scent can be effected by weather, David Austin I believe say the same. And that is what I find. If we have particularly chilly overnight temps it kills much of the scent for me. If I happen to have a rose in flower in November/december it’s unlikely I will detect much scent if any. If that is my brain or my nose, the weather or the rose I can’t be sure. But I don’t always detect strong scent from known strong scented roses. I wish I did :)

Hey Jay Jay , so my Kordes roses have flowered and finally I got to experience the Kordes range in the growing season now. Unfortunately I am disappointed in Fruity Parfuma - there is a scent but its very faint and basic like any normal faint rose scent so for now its only appeal is the ball like flower shape, Fruity Parfuma however is completely disease resistant even in a heavy week of rain no sign of any rust / blackspot at all. I do notice Fruity parfuma has this growth habit of keeping its new growth stage for a long time the reddish young shoot remains on tender red color for a while before the leaves actually mature into darker green. I have another kordes called 'Adorable' which is pinkish mauve however has a much stronger and sweet candy like scent / more like sugar sweet perfume and that was alot more impressive over Fruity Parfuma. I agree with you on the Sweet Honey from Kordes it has Amazing health and growth but one thing I noticed that comes along with it is high thorn factor more than other roses. to the point of the underside of the leaf veins have excessive thorns. To date I still rate older style roses like Twilight Zone to have one of the strongest sweetly scent for a rose. I am waiting for Spicy Parfuma which I havent judged. But one thing I will praise for Kordes is how healthy the growth is and the resistance to blackspot so far none has any sign of black spot in some heavy weeks of rain that we've had. Other older roses perish with blackspot almost de-leafing entirely.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Жыл бұрын
Hi Callum, an interesting read and I can’t disagree with you. What I will say is I was mildly disappointed with not only fruity but a few of the Parfuma collection in this first spring and summer after planting. Now In autumn I’m still mildly disappointed with some of them but fruity turned a corner for me later in the summer and started to do very well. Regarding the fragrance, I’m not sure if it’s in this video I mention it but we had cold overnight temps in late spring that killed alot of the fragrance for me in my roses. Even though weather could be perfect daytime, it was the unusual colder overnight temps that was doing the damage to fragrance during the day. I’ve been told you need a good solid 48hrs of stable consistent seasonal temps for the roses to let off their fragrance. Also as I mention in a few of my videos some days it’s just not a strong fragrance day! Many variety of roses I think have this. But if your fruity is newly planted I’d stick with it and see how you get on. I defo get a lovely fruity fragrance from mine now. For me spicy Parfuma hit the road running soon after planting and has always performed well and has always been fragrant even in that colder spell we had. Would love to know how your getting on with it but fruity for me is doing very well this tail end of the year. Another year or two under its belt I think she will be great. Best of luck ;)
@calumho6253
@calumho6253 Жыл бұрын
@@Jay_Jay Perhaps your right , but all the kordes were purchase together as bare rooted during winter this is their first year , the Kordes 'Adorable' need no special conditions hot , sunny , rain or cool it gave off consistent candy sweet fragrance regardless of weather/time of day. The same with a Twilight Zone I have, it does not need special weather conditions or impacted by time of day. I'm in a temperate zone here so summers are scorchers this year we have a monsoon like spring where every week is almost a downpour with a few hot days. But these are my observations so far and I been hovering over them like a bee lol. PS. I also started to notice wasp's coming by now that its mid spring and keeping a eye on them..... I haven't observed the petal munching wasp yet that you had. Most of the roses by now have aphids - though not enough to affect their growth I decided to let nature take its course as its also attracted a ton of 'hover flies' which lay their eggs and the larvae eat the aphids. Waiting on Spicy parfuma , but so far out of the Kordes - 'Adorable' has been most impressive to me both flower , color and fragrance. Its thorn factor is medium/ minimum. something I noticed each rose has a specific thorn factor none, low , medium , high. TheTwilight Zone (not Kordes) I have practically has no thorns from any of the spring growth I have seen and so smooth to handle for a cut flower.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Жыл бұрын
@@calumho6253 yes some variety of roses are like that I think, Always fragrant. Emily bronte for instance a very stable and predictable fragrance whatever is going on with the weather. But I think many varieties of roses can be less predictable when it comes to scent, That is what I am discovering. Your twilight zone rose sounds interesting I’ll have to take a look it’s one I haven’t heard of. But fruity id stick with it for some time and see how you get on. Some roses it just takes time often years to start singing. And after a underwhelming start I’m happy with mine and I think a year or two she will be even better. ;)

@calumho6253 Жыл бұрын
@@Jay_Jay Yes sticking to my Fruity Parfuma as well it has alot of fantastic qualities other than the mediocre scent. Its immune to black spot , flowers hold up sooooo long. - regarding Twilight Zone it is not Kordes but a more common older Modern rose. It does have resistance to black spot but not immune. It wouldn't defoliate from it though. I beleive Twilight zone is a Grandiflora type . like a Floribunda but flowers in larger size.

Hi Cathy in this video (that was last year) I fed my roses a granular feed in early spring and again after first flush. They also received mulch in late winter and a few liquid seaweed meals during the spring and summer. This year I haven’t fed my roses planted in the ground at all. Some of my potted roses have been fed but not all. They did all however receive a deep load of plant based organic mulch in mid April. Results are still unclear but it’s an experiment and will see how it levels out over the year. Thanks

Kordes writes, on their website, that a stronger fragrance usually comes with a shorter vaselife. Interesting, I wonder if there are any good exceptions..? I think Kordes has to work more with names that make me want to buy them... 🙂

They say that plants don’t produce fragrance when conditions are not optimal for their pollinators. By not producing fragrance when it is cool or overcast, the plants conserve energy that can be directed at creating new roots and leaves.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 11 ай бұрын
Correct Davidm I’ve learnt this now. And I learnt that it can take 24 -48 hours for the roses to start producing fragrance again having had weather conditions that aren’t suitable. The colder overnight snaps we had last year froze out a lot of the daytime fragrance. I’m told this is to protect the pollinators as it would harm them. Nature can be a clever thing.

Hi there. Yes but there is a slight downside that hasn’t occurred to me until recently. Those flowers seem to take an age to open. Even when the buds start to unfold it can take forever compared to other roses in my garden. By the time it’s fully open maybe a week or two has already passed which is fine if it is dry. I do prefer my roses in the garden but this rose is a rose I would consider bringing inside. It has a lovely fruity fragrance that even I can detect as being fruit. I’m not sure yet how they will do as cut flowers. But please remember these are very young roses I’m still monitoring them. Thanks

She is perfectly quartered, cupped when newly open, then becomes more disorganized when maturing, the fragrance is very pleasant grapefruit overlaid with old rose, but the grapefruit is the dominant scent element. A very special rose. I adore quartered rose blooms. Hald of my roses are in the ground, half are in massive pots. The roses that are irreplaceable, extremely slow to develop, or their survival is doubtful in our Ohio winters are in pots and they go into the 45 degree fahrenheit room for winter, this gives me rose blossoms a full 6 weeks earlier than my roses in the ground. 4:22 Yes, I have noted that cold weather will not volatize the fragrance, average weather the fragrance is large if the variety has fragrance, some more, some less, then hot weather evaporates all of the frgrance out. 6:10 Yes, there MUST be fragrance for me, I will not plant non fragrant plants of any kind unless there is something really above and beyond going on visually, caladium leaves for example, caladiums are wonderfull planted at the base of the roses, they seem to better integrate the rose into it's environment, ESPECIALLY the once and done roses. My small cottage garden is a fragrance garden. Towering oriental lilies putting out clouds of fragrance during sultry summer nights. Hyacinths, daffodils, all must be fragrant. 7:29 I absolutely love the Kordes emphasis on globular, "fairy tale" form roses. This form can be troublesome in wet weather, they can ball, mummify and not open. It seems as though the opening is dependent upon the outside surface of the petals drying, therefore contracting, in order to open. I absolutley love the old Redoute, cabbage roses. And so do the folks at Kordes. A connousieur form of rose really. A connouiseur is that gardener willing to endure whatever troubles an exceptional plant may have, unlike the average buyer who wants reliablity and ease of culture. 10:06 Nicely quartered also. So far i have no white roses. To me, white is a non color, a blank page with nothing on it, HOWEVER, I have been looking a long time for a strongly quartered rose in white, because the light color will show the quartering much better than a darker color. 10:36 Yes, my Rarth Angel aka Herzegovina Christiana is beginning it's third year. In my opinion it is a MUST HAVE rose. Absolutely perfectly quartered blooms, perfect Redoute cabbage globular form. Absolutely a joy in my garden. Moderately susceptible to balling in wet weather, but not bad. There must be many days of wet weather to cause it to ball, and hard , pounding rain bruises the flowers causing tan, dried out spots, but it does better than other globular roses, I suppose that petal thickness is a factor in that. Some roses have thin petals, others, mainly hybrid teas have thick, leathery petals. I love the Earth Angel so much that I must force myself to shut up now and listen more. 11:00 yes, for me, hard, hammering rain is much more likely to damage Earth Angel than ordinary rain. T quantify, I would say that for me, here in Ohio, Earth Angel is perfect 80 percent of the time. 11:39 Those of us who are experienced rose growers know that some roses bloom only on the previous years growth, so there will be no booms the first year, other roses bloom on the current season's growth, so they will have blooms the first year, I think of those as "instant gratification" roses. I write this mainly for readers who may be put out by the fact that their new rose is not blooming, Jay Jay knows this, but the readers may not. And some of the most "soul meltingly" beautiful old roses are those that bloom on old wood, not new wood, the Moss Roses are of that type, centifolias. 11:49, beautiful, soft, ethereal pink, easy to look at, strong pinks to me have the same effect as traffic lights, annoying to look at for very long. This has a soft, luminous, ethereal pink, VERY nice. Thank you for sharing! It has been said that England is a nation of gardeners, I suppose that describes the old school, quintessential Englishman, the modern, younger citizens, maybe not so much.

Wow what a fascinating and enjoyable read thanks ever so much. I haven’t looked at my KZfaq channel for sometime but I enjoyed reading that, I need to catch up with it. I’ve said previously of all my roses earth angel is the one rose I really want to see do well. I have two of them one is potted and one is now in the ground. They are both young, a year old and a year and a half. But last year I wasn’t taken aback with either of them. The hope is in a couple of years they will start to stretch there legs. A beautiful flower i think. The poets wife I got after a visit to da. Gorgeous fragrance and a friend has suggested she goes in the ground so that is happening before spring. I have a space for her. The repeat flowering I have a few roses this past year that only gave me the one flush. Maid of Kent (again) Arthur bell. And snow princess (again). These roses are 2 or 3 years old and one of my Arthur bell much older. I also know of someone who also saw Arthur bell only with one flush. Seems very odd but I’m determined to see them with more this coming year. Perhaps the drought we had effected them but they seemed happy just a lack of repeat flowering. They were pruned as advised but we will see. Yes sadly being the U.K. we do get a fair amount of wet weather most years. Especially were I live so I do try to keep an eye on things before they go in the ground. Yes the quint essential English Gardner, definitely old school! A renown part of English heritage I guess. A wealth of knowledge and experience with a touch of idealism like an old England cricket club or all England lawn tennis like Wimbledon. Men often wearing Blazer and tie. But I do like to see the the newer generation of English Gardner coming through and picking up awards at the Chelsea flower show with their new ideas and fresh thinking and attitude. An aura of future around them and old fashioned stuffy ideas not so much :) Thanks for dropping by I enjoyed your read.

@@Jay_Jay So good to hear how it goes in the "nation of gardeners". Yes, the Gertude Jekyll style cottage garden is a pleasant sort of "story book" sentimentalism that I enjoy. I spent MANY evenings online trying to get a Madame Hardy rose, absolutely unavailable in the U.S. or Canada, and English sellers will not ship to the USA thanks to our paranoid politicians with their quarantine rules, as if the USA is so pristine that it will be defiled by imports from other nations. I tried to conjure a way to get it sent to my customer in England, then send it on to me, I got no response to my message. SO, after days and weeks of searching for a snow white quartered rose, to no avail, there is NO equvalent to Madame Hardy, snow white, strongly quartered, neat and tidy rorettes, SO, today I bought a Quatre Saison Blanc Mouseaux rose plant. I doo love moss roses with their gummy, fresh ground allspice scent moss on the flower buds. I have had a Common Pink Moss rose for 5 years now, a once and done, powerfully fragrant with old romantic form. So, this year, Quatre saisons and Pashmina Veranda Flower Circus are my two new roses. Roses with lax canes look very nice in large planters, I like how the canes arch down and completely conceal the planter. O.K., I shall be looking for more videos from you. Thank you for sharing! Ralph in Ohio.

Idk if I did right or not, but I have Earth Angel (and an old Tea rose, which are also notoriously prone to rain damage) planted under the canopy of a tree, where it does get 6+ hours of direct sunlight, but I’m hoping the canopy of leaves will protect them a bit & (hopefully) minimize rain damage. They’re still quite young, Earth Angel’s blooms still aren’t “peony-shaped” yet even, so I’m not really sure if this attempted defense will work out or not in the long run.
@Jay_Jay

I’m not sure but if you’ve planted them I’d definitely wait and see until at least the dormant season. Under a tree is sheltered until the leaves can take no more water. Then they leak big rain. Are you in the states? I’ve seen a fair few Earth angel state side and they always appear to me to do very well. So I would definitely give it time and see how things go. Here I think it can be a little more damp and miserable.

Hi there Devi, yes this year I have planted in some smaller lightweight plastic pots but as yet I do not know how the winter will treat them. I’m hoping they don’t crack in the cold they are pretty strong plastic but time will tell. If the terracotta pots are too heavy you could try your luck with the lighter and cheaper plastic pots but try and get the chunky plastic but there is no guarantee they will survive the frost. Hi Bella. I have many different size pots. The largest being I guess 80 litre 18 gallons. If I believe a rose is gonna be transferred into the ground I like to ideally get them in smaller pots like 20-30 litre. This way it’s easier to check the root Ball after the first year and transfer it into the ground keeping the root ball intact. Some of my bigger roses like lark ascending are in the bigger pots as I originally planned to keep her there. I did check the root ball this year but it’s not easy. I’m hoping she can stay there for a while longer yet.

Hi Lucy, the short answer is I don’t know. I am growing a ferocious climber (kiftsgate) up a tree in my front garden. But that is potted. I’ve been to David Austin and had the exact same experience. So disappointing and I feel your pain. But first of all I have to explain this to you. Roses let of scent when the conditions are right for insects to pollinate. That’s the purpose of roses. The problem we have had in my area at least this year is that I have had unusually low overnight temperatures. Even if it’s boiling hot during the day those lower overnight temps cause the damage. And the roses literally turn off the fragrance tap. It takes two or three days of nice weather to get the roses functioning. The roses you mention are fragrant roses. I have Earth angel here and it’s yet to give ME any fragrance this year at all. But I still fail to believe it’s not a fragrant rose. First crush another from the Parfuma collection gave me the most awesome fragrance on one evening. Other than that I’ve had zilch from it. I went back to DA last week and I had great fragrance on the day I was there. Some roses were a little muted but overall it was good fragrance. Any of the roses you mention I think will be fragrant. For me spicy Parfuma has been the most consistently fragrant Rose from the Parfuma collection. But I suspect first crush is intense fragrance if the weather conditions are normal. Summer romance is another one that’s giving me stable fragrance. Some roses will be effected more than others of course. But any of the ones you mention and the ones I mention above I think will ordinarily be good. Best of luck
