Such a sad story. She literally was “held back” and damaged at birth and that sadly became the theme of her entire life. As a nurse, I literally wanted to vomit when I heard that Rose’s midwife (nurse) literally held baby Rosemary in the birth canal for 2 hrs waiting for the doctor so he could get paid for the delivery. It’s disgusting. She suffered an anoxic brain injury likely the source of her delays. Shame on the nurse and the doctor. All for the sake of money and greed. Just awful. We take vows as nurses to do no harm. That nurse did great harm by following that doctors orders. I can’t imagine the hell Rose went through needing to deliver her baby and not being allowed to. It’s practically assault. It certainly assaulted the brain of poor baby Rosemary. She very likely was a perfectly normal baby girl that was damaged forever by birth trauma.

This makes me so sad. My Brother was born in 1950, a delayed birth, like Rosemary. His damage was far more severe. He had Cerbral Palsy. My dad arenas didn’t know until it came time for him to walk. He didn’t walk until numerous surgeries were done on his legs, ankles and groin. He was 26 when he took his first steps and could walk with the assistance of a walker. He had seizures and epilepsy as well. He, later on had a brain pacemaker (cerebellum stimulator and was the eighth patient to ever have one implanted in his brain. This calmed down the much of the spacicity, enabling him to use his arm and hands with better control. He passed away from a heart attack at the age of 65. I was just thinking about him this morning, still crying on my way to work at all he had gone through and the pain it must have caused him. That’s when I saw this lecture. I am so thankful that my parents never put him away and he was able to live a peaceful and happy life at home. I remember my mother, worrying her whole life about what would happen to him. If she passed away, he weighed so heavily on her heart. In the end, he passed away before she did. I wish she had never worried you never know how things are going to turn out.

@@rachealsiciliano9092 My daughter and her ex husband adopted a child, the mother had mental health issues and father both. They took her at the hospital, she has other children and they watch her, as she will try to hide the babies. The mother was not able to care for a child. When she was younger it wasn't too bad, but as she got older, she got very hard to handle. So she now lives with the father, she can be a danger,, If she doesn't get her own way all hell breaks loose. You have to watch her, every second., she steals food and snacks, the refrig has to be locked and cabinets also. My daughter had moved and she got up, in the middle of the night, went for a walk, no coat on, not even sure if she had shoes on. A women who was out jogging, at 5am found her sleeping on a park bench, in town. That was still in winter. So she called the police, she had her mothers phone and they got the address off of the phone, from a picture. The second time she went for a walk to the store and got walked back after they called the police. This girl is 11-with the mind set of a 3 year old, she will case out what she sees and goes after what she wants when you turn your back. Also makes a great locksmith as she can figure out how to open locks.

Thank you, Mrs Larsen, for telling Rosemary's compelling story. Growing up I knew relatives who hid their intellectually challenged daughter. Daisy, in a back room if someone came to visit. When she died she was buried in a far corner of the family cemetery as though even in death they thought she'd contaminate them. Kudos to younger Kennedys who worked to get legislation passed to make life more amenable for anyone living with challenges.

It really wasn't a secret. My mother, who was born in 1924, told me this story circa 1970 when I was a girl. Everyone knew at the time it occurred, or shortly later, that Rosemary was forced to suffer a lobotomy and then disappeared from public view. As a child, I was horrified by the story of Rosemary then, and as an adult who now realizes what far better options the Kennedy parents had at their disposal, I'm even more horrified now.

Ever the Queen of England had two cousins,sisters who spent their entire adult lives in care. I read one report that there had been some family trees that had even dropped the girls from the family history. I think thing are straight now. People had strange ideas of why people were mentally disabled. Often blaming the birth mishap or something the mother did during pregnancy. I was told my uncle got special privileges because he was a breach birth, blue baby. Yes , I guessed oxygen dep. during childbirth.

It was standard operating procedure back then and even, as far as I know, through the late 60s when my cousin was born with cerebral palsy for the same reason. If the doctor wasn't there, they didn't get paid, so nurses were told to tell the mom to hold the baby in. And family wasn't allowed in the delivery room back then. I don't know when they finally stopped that practice, but it wasn't just a one time situation.

I imagine that Rose stopped visiting her for at least a couple of reasons,…..she probably thought there was little point in going if Rosemary was unable to respond or became actually distressed by her presence. Also, Rose herself , probably found the experience too sad, to deal with. We are not all made the same ,(just like some people are not cut out to be nurses, for instance) & feel that they can contribute nothing useful. We have no right to try to force them to feel or behave in a way that we feel is correct, especially from the position of hindsight or if one has never experienced a scenario like this…

Excellent presentation, but extremely sad. Had it not been for her parents' concern about what "society" would think, these people were beyond well equipped to provide this child/woman with the happiest and most secure life imaginable. They had every resource, which makes this all the more shameful and unforgivable. Because of the great love her siblings and their offspring had for her, her legacy is the Special Olympics and similar programs and advocacy for the mentally challenged. R.I.P. Rosemary Kennedy. So unfair.
@d.annejohnson5631
@d.annejohnson5631 9 ай бұрын
I believe your conclusion that the problem was "social" concerns is quite unfair to the Kennedy parents. Although this author is critical of Joe and Rose if you listen to the above in full it is clear to me that both parents expended extensive time, money and effort in trying desperately to find a way for Rosemary to be happy as well as learn some independence and learn to get along with others. It was only when she began running away and having horrific temper tantrums and physically attacking others...after she was a tall, and full grown woman. that the worst mistakes were made. The vast majority of such children in those days ended up in institutions because neither society nor the medical and educational experts knew what to do.

They are creepy to this day . 😢 But I think back then they didn't want them to be seen or escape ? Idk I know they where used for patients they didn't know what to do with ugh that history is awful just awful how could they treat a human being like that ? An to have a lobotomy she has to be awake so the Dr knows how far to go they have them sing back then .it's awful how could any one treat another human that way 😢😢 I can't imagine how awful it was for them 😭

It was sad. But medical journals were also heralding lobotomy as revolutionary, even the creator was awarded with a nobel peace prize. I can see why desperate patients and their families flocked to Walter Freeman. That said, it seems like Joe wanted it done for all the wrong reasons. To make her docile and co operative, which I guess became the main appeal about lobotomy after people figured out it wasn't curing anyone.

#MONTESSORI IS A CULT DEEPLY CONNECTED TO THE KENNEDY FAMILY - WHO RECENTLY KILLED MY ELDERLY GRANDMOTHER IN AUSTRALIA, WHERE CAROLINE KENNEDY IS AMBASSADOR & THEN PLACED A RUSSIAN MERCINARY INSURGENT PRINCIPAL AS HEAD OF THEIR LOCAL MONTOSORRI PROJECT - WITH THE SAME NAME AS MY GRANDMOTHER... THEY ALSO KILLED MY FATHER RS GIRLFRIEND'S EX HUSBAND SO THEY COULD TAKE HIS MULTIMILLION DOLLAR CONOLLLA FARM! OH DO I HAVE SOME FKN STORIES ABOUT THE KENNEDY FAMILY THANKS TO PRINCE ANDREW & GHILSANE MAXWELL'S LITTLE UNDERSTUDY CAROLINE KENNEDY! I BET THEY USED ROSEMARY TO PRODUCE BLOODLINE KENNEDY BABIES OFF THE RECORD, THAT GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT THEY DO WITH! IT WOULDN'T BE THE FIRST TIME I'VE SEEN CAROLINE KENNEDY AROUND AN ATTRACTIVE, FORCIBLY DETAINED WOMAN, WHO SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN DETAINED IN AN INSTITUTION TO BEGIN WITH, WHO HAS EXPERIENCED MULTIPLE UNEXPLAINED PREGNANCIES WHILE DETAINED IN A WOMENS ONLY FACILITY - AND THE BEST REASON ANYONE INVOLVED WITH THE GOVERNMENT RAN FACILITY COULD GIVE FOR THESE PREGNANCIES WAS THAT SHE WAS MAKING THEM UP OR THEY WERE ONLY BENIGN, REOCCURING PHANTOM PREGNANCIES THAT DESPITE HAPPENING WHILE IN A HOSPITAL SETTING, NO ONE THOUGHT ANYTHING SHOULD BE EVER DONE TO MEDICALLY TREAT THIS APPARENTLY "NORMAL" CONDITION THAT CONTINUED TO REOCCUR FOR SOME TIME... THATS THE BEST EXPLANATION THEY'VE FKN GOT, WHILE RUNNING AROUND WITH CAROLINE KENNEDY KNOCKING OFF ELDERLY WOMEN & ENTICING PRINCE WILLIAM TO SEND HIS KIDS TO #MONTOSORRI FKN SCHOOLS WITH THE EPSTEIN, PRINCE ANDREW, GHILSANE MAXWELL, KENNEDY SEX TRAFFICKING & PEDOPHILE NETWORK! GO HAVE A LOOK AT ANOTHER PEDOPHILE FRIEND OF CAROLINE KENNEDY, #MALKA LEIFER, AND HER CONTINUED HARASSMENT OF HER FEMALE VICTIMS WHILE PREGNANT. I truly say this as a concerned, loving Christian, worried for the wellbeing of others. It breaks my heart to hear of praying to anyone besides Jesus and the Father--other imperfect, mortal humans who have been put on a pedestal by other humans. It actually does against Scripture, and they do say to not add or take anything away. Where in the Bible does it say to pray to Mary and human "saints"?

Protestants people in heaven aren't dead! What a stupid thing to say. Saint Paul wrote of the 'great cloud of witnesses' in heaven who are concerned with our progress to heaven. Also Jesus said there is life after death. How can you believe you have an afterlife in heaven and then say that the people closest to God cannot pray for us, that they are "dead"? What do you think life after death is, if those who are fully alive in Christ in heaven and perfectly aligned to God's will, standing in his presence, are "dead"? Can't you even grasp how stupid it is to say that souls in heaven are "dead"? The STUPIDITY of Protestant traditions of men (Luther and Calvin) are so mind-boggling that Catholics wonder if you just have to be stupid as a prerequisite to being Protestant. The book of Revelation also speaks of the blessed in heaven praying for us. You don't know or understand (or even accept) the WHOLE BIBLE and in your ignorance of the history Christianity and the Bible you pass judgement on things you don't understand based on bigotry and lies you've been told all your life. But Protestantism is a tradition of men started NOT by Jesus but by Luther and Calvin who took the Catholic Bible out of the Catholic Church, tore out all the books they did not believe in and created a false, new, 'Christianity' that's a pack of lies, tore Christ's church into many parts and started western civilization onto the downward slide into relativism, materialism and selfish individualism we see today. Why did Luther want to tear the Letter of James out of the Bible (Bible Christian? Bible haters!)? Because of his lie of 'faith alone' being completely refuted by scripture, so just tear out any parts of scripture that reveal that sola fides and Sola scriptura are lies from Satan. Look up 'faith alone' in the Bible. Where do you find that phrase in the Bible? I dare you to look up 'faith alone' those words exactly, in scripture. When you do, you'll see that Protestantism is a lie and not supported by the Bible. It was totally made up by two men in the 1500s. And you have the diabolical arrogance to call yourself 'Bible Christians' when the Bible itself proves that sola fides and Sola scriptura are diabolical lies. But of course, you have to be stupid to believe Luther's lies and Calvin's casuistry, so it's no point talking to brain dead bigots.

Those in heaven are aware of the prayers of those on earth. This can be seen, for example, in Revelation 5:8, where John depicts the saints in heaven offering our prayers to God under the form of “golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.” But if the saints in heaven are offering our prayers to God, then they must be aware of our prayers.

The story of Rosemary Kennedy is hauntingly sad. The most beautiful Kennedy of all was born to a cruel, judgmental, deceitful, Catholic mother who valued social status, money, and appearances above all else. As the author said many times, the Kennedy family had all the money in the world to keep Rosemary with the family, safe, happy, and away from prying eyes. They chose instead to destroy her and totally abandon her so Rose would never have to worry about her precious social status that she so revered. Kudos to some of the Shriver kids who want Rosemary's story told accurately. It serves no person to cover for selfish people who are long dead anyway.

@Janet Woods There is factually no such thing as a mental illness, as that has since been exposed as being invented by the pseudo medical industries of psychology, psychiatry, etc and what is referred to erroneously as "mental illness" is actually due to subjective individual factors - for example such as alcoholism, exposure to pharmaceutical drugs, environmental, GMOs, fluoride, and other chemicals, etc, societal stress, hopelessness, immaturity, and spiritual depravity, etc. However, there is such a thing as brain damage and by all verified documentation, Rosemary was tragically a victim of brain damage - when she was still a newborn and her birth was delayed and it resulted in oxygen deprivation and damage to her brain. Hence why she had all of those problems. Sadly, there are still many forms of prenatal brain damage which occur either through intentional or accidental fault of one or both parents as well as through substandard care. If you want more information, please research Wayne Ramsay's discussion on exposing the myth of mental illness, as well as the Psych Victims.com, as well as the Bible itself for more facts. God bless!

Starting in the early 1940s, my grandmother-with a BS in nursing--delivered babies when doctors would show up late at night, show up drunk, or not at all. Thank God she was smart enough to take the bull by the horns. I don't know if it was because, when she was born in 1922, the obstetrician (in a hospital) was so drunk, he filled out the paperwork improperly, and he damaged my great-grandmother's system forever. (She could never have more children.) It's really tragic that when Rosemary was born, she didn't have a nurse who knew better than to make her mother's womb a virtual death chamber for her, as the oxygen deprivation was sealing her fate.

Rosemary was the most beautiful of the sisters, so sad what happened to her. She seemed to have been a vivacious charming young lady who was slower than her siblings but could have still had a good life. In the film clips and photos of her before the surgery she looked so charming and seemed so sweet. Joe must have felt completely threatened by her disabilities so he wanted her to disappear for the sake of the family. Sad. But glad to see Rosemary getting some new attention with this book.

Back then, most rich families who had disabled children, quietly transferred them to institutions to be locked away forever. At least, Joe and Rose tried to keep Rosemary and included her in the family. But they kept trying to "fix" her, they didn't want to accept that there was no fixing her disabilities. And when the threat of a scandal grew and it became difficult to hide her, they fell for those criminal quack doctors who promised to miraculously turn her into a "normal" young woman.

At the 20:25 mark the narrator says that Joe was a "brilliant financier" which is such a ridiculous statement I about fell out of my chair when I heard her say it.. Allow me to set the record straight: Joe Kennedy "made" his first fortune bootlegging alcohol during Prohibition and was naturally involved with known mobsters and other unsavory types to ply his "trade" - which is why Joe could never run for elective office himself. For this woman to imply Joe Kennedy was an honest man is disingenuous and tarnishes HER OWN credibility.

Oh my goodness, do you feel better now that you have set the record straight. Joe had several occupations. He was a financier a lot longer than he was a bootlegger. She wasn't saying he was a honest man. He had no medical training what so ever and relied on the best medical advice he could get. Even today, no one really knows what was going on with Rose Mary, how were they suppose to know back then what the correct diagnosis was.

I"m not sure about the IQ test that was done when she was very young that said she was in the 60-70 range because she seems to have only been tested once and when test was new. Nonetheless, she certainly had developmental delays. I don't know why it is a problem to admit that. It would be just as tragic that she was lobotomized no matter what her intellectual capacity.

Back then she would have been called mentally retarded. As a child (1960's)we had a neighbor named Renee, she was 28 years old and her mother cared for her from home from the get go. She was also physically disabled had some right side paralyses and rigidness that resulted in a unusual gait but she could play with us kids with abandon. My mom said she was mentally retarded but she too liked Renee and allowed us to include her in our outside play. Earlier, before the 50's the word "feeble minded" would be used, that slipped into her vocabulary every once in a while.

Another thing that needs to be touched on, people did not question doctors in that era. Anything a doctor said had to be true. I remember the older generation behaved in this way. They never questioned doctors. I think Joe sincerely believed that a lobotomy would work based on doctor's testimony. Rose probably saw few, if any, options left for Rosemary. Today she'd be on heavy medication, living in some assisted home setup, with no lobotomy.
